Rain beads on the crumbling gate as Neko reaches his family’s castle. Moss slicks the stones, and the portcullis hangs crooked in rusted chains.

Inside the great hall, dim torchlight catches heavy trunks, open satchels, and meager bundles laid out across the flagstones.

His mother, father, brother, and the clan elders stop mid-stride and turn toward him, their hands still on rope and wood.

The Mother

The Mother

You came back just in time, Neko.

The Father

The Father

The Baron’s tax men ride by sunset. If we cannot pay, they take the castle.

The Brother

The Brother

They are already at the outer road. We heard their horses an hour ago.

The Elder

The Elder

We have sold what we can. What remains is either debt, steel, or a miracle.

A cold draft crawls through the hall, stirring banners gone dull with age. All eyes settle on Neko, waiting for what he will do before the gate is lost.

Neko

Neko

We ask for an extension until winter. I go out, hunt monsters, and bring back the coin.

The Father

The Father

If the Baron takes patience as payment, winter may spare us. It is a thin hope, but it is a hope.

The Mother

The Mother

Then take the road. Take the kit, take dry rations, and come back with enough to make them listen.

The Brother

The Brother

I can saddle the horse and write the petition. If the tax men come early, we show them the sealed plea.

The Elder

The Elder

A miracle is a stubborn thing. It often begins as a plan no one likes, then becomes the only thing left.

The father reaches across the trunk and presses Neko’s forearm once, brief and firm. The mother is already gathering the best cloak. The hall, for a moment, feels less like a tomb and more like a place still choosing to stand.

The Mother

The Mother

Say the word, and we start counting what you need for the road.

Neko leaves Crumbling castle great hall behind and arrives at The Baron's estate.

I head to the baron asking for mercy through a petition as well as my plan to hunt monsters.

The Clerk
The Clerk

The Baron’s estate rises ahead in black stone and wet ivy, its gatehouse lanterns burning low in the dusk. Neko’s petition is in hand, and the road dust on his boots is the last sign of the castle behind him.

Inside the outer yard, a clerk in a soot-gray tabard turns from a rain-streaked ledger table. He notices the seal first, then Neko’s sword, and his mouth tightens with recognition.

The Clerk

The Clerk

You come for the Baron’s mercy, then. Or to beg his patience.

Neko

Neko

I bring a petition, and a plan to hunt monsters for the coin he wants.

The clerk takes the paper carefully, reading the seal, then glancing past Neko toward the estate doors as if weighing how much trouble one armed caller might already carry.

The Clerk

The Clerk

A petition with a road promise behind it. That is better than most who come here.

The Clerk

The Clerk

Wait here. If the Baron finds the idea useful, he will hear you himself.

I wait for the Baron to hear me

Neko waits in the rain-dark yard without speaking. The clerk studies him for a long breath, then folds the petition once and tucks it under his arm like a document worth carrying upstairs.

The Clerk

The Clerk

You stay. If the Baron will hear this, he will not do it from an empty hall.

A guard at the estate doors raps a butt on the stone and opens only one leaf. Warm lamplight spills across the wet yard, and the clerk gestures Neko forward with a quick, nervous flick of his hand.

As Neko crosses the threshold, rain beads on his sword hilt and one cold drop slips down his wrist. The clerk’s respect is not trust, but it is enough to be admitted.

The Clerk

The Clerk

Mind your blade. The Baron dislikes steel in the antechamber.

Inside, the doors thud shut behind him. The cost lands at once, a damp chill in his sleeve and the sour taste of being measured by strangers, but the petition is now in the Baron’s house instead of on the road.

Somewhere deeper in the estate, a voice carries faintly down the corridor. The Baron is being told someone waits to be heard.

I follow the clerk to the Baron

Neko follows the clerk through a narrow passage of wet stone and firelight. The estate grows quieter with each step, as if the walls themselves are listening.

The Clerk

The Clerk

Keep to my pace. The Baron does not like to be kept waiting.

They reach a carved door at the end of the corridor. The clerk lifts a hand, hesitates, then pushes it open and ushers Neko inside.

The Baron’s chamber is warm, all brass gleam and dark timber, with a ledger open on the table like a judge. Two tax men stand beside it, turning as Neko enters.

The Clerk

The Clerk

My lord, the petitioner has come in person.

One tax man squints at Neko, then at the petition under the clerk’s arm. The room’s easy certainty thins, replaced by attention.

The Baron

The Baron

Speak, then. Tell me why your house should be spared the toll.

I plead the family’s case as well as me leaving my home to fulfill contracts to slay monsters to earn money. I also ask how much I need to earn.

Neko

My house is not trying to dodge its duty. I leave to earn coin by hunting monsters, and I ask only what sum will satisfy the tax.

The Baron studies Neko a long moment. The clerk stills beside the table, and one tax man glances down at the petition as if it has grown heavier.

The Baron

The Baron

A direct plea. Good. Your family’s name is old, but age does not pay arrears. Speak plainly, then.

The Clerk

The Clerk

He is asking the right question. That alone changes the room.

The Baron taps the ledger once, then slides it a finger’s breadth toward himself. His tone stays measured, but the chamber tightens around the number he is about to name.

The Baron

The Baron

You need enough to cover the full levy, plus the crown’s overdue interest. One hundred silver marks.

The clerk’s breath catches. The nearest tax man shifts his weight, and the petition rustles against the clerk’s sleeve.

The Baron

The Baron

Bring that by sunset, and your family keeps the roof for now. Fail, and my men collect in person.

I accept the Baron’s price but ask if he can wait til winter to collect explaining i will need time to work for the money.

I accept the price. Give me until winter, and I will bring it to you.

Neko

Neko

I need time to work for it.

The Baron holds Neko’s gaze, then gives a small, deliberate nod. The clerk lowers the petition a little, as if the room has shifted under his hands.

The Baron

The Baron

Winter, then. Not a day later. My ledger will remember your face if your coin does not.

The Clerk

The Clerk

He has bought time. Barely. That is more than most families get.

The Baron reaches for the ledger and marks a line beside the sum. The scratch of the quill is sharp in the quiet chamber.

The Clerk

The Clerk

I will draft the reprieve as agreed. Bring proof of payment when winter comes.
