The Star Streak hums on through the night, steady and sure. Below deck, the infirmary waits in pale lamplight, herbs hanging in dry bundles along the walls.

Emma stands beside the examination table and gestures Kael toward the stool, her posture all business, her gaze measuring and calm.

Kael Umal moves to the table and sits, silent beneath the ship’s soft thrum.

Emma

Emma

Routine only. I want to check that the voyage is not taking more from you than it shows.

At the doorway, Sophie lingers in the corridor glow, red hair loose from the helm, while Maisie stands just behind her with a chart folded under one arm, both of them easing in after the long climb.

Maisie

Maisie

Our course holds. A little longer and we clear the rough currents.

Sophie

The ship likes a firm hand tonight. It answers well.

Emma reaches for a linen cloth and the room settles into a rare pocket of quiet, all of them gathered around the same steady purpose.

“Emma closes the door to give her and the captain privacy during the medical exam. Emma asks the captain to remove his shirt. Miles peeks through the keyhole of the door again and is surprised as she watches the shirtless captain and Emma interact, but Miles cannot turn away. She is intrigued.”

Emma eases the infirmary door shut, and the hush deepens around the table. The ship’s low thrum presses through the floorboards, steady as a heartbeat.

Emma

Emma

There. Better for an exam.

Emma

Emma

Captain, would you remove your shirt for me?

Kael complies, and the pale lamplight catches the black star-flecked armor as it shifts free. Emma’s practiced calm sharpens into careful attention.

Emma

Emma

No fever. No tremor. The strain is elsewhere, if it is anywhere at all.

From the corridor, a small scratch of movement touches the keyhole. Miles is there again, peering in, frozen by what she sees.

Emma notices the shadow at the door, then looks back to Kael without breaking her focus. For the first time, her tone loosens by a fraction.

Emma

Emma

Hold still a moment, captain. Let me see whether the voyage has left its mark.

“Emma tells the captain that his energy levels are abnormally high and that he seems a bit stressed and should begin a daily routine of relieving the stress. She starts to kiss the shirtless captain. Miles watches through the keyhole of the door.”

Emma’s hand rests lightly at Kael’s sternum, then shifts to his wrist, feeling the pulse there with a clinician’s calm. The hidden tension in her mouth eases into something warmer.

Emma

Emma

Your pulse is quick, and your stores of strength are running hot. That is not illness, captain, just strain.

Emma

Emma

You should keep a daily habit for it, breathing, rest, and a little release of the pressure before it gathers.

She leans in and brushes a brief kiss against him, more tender than daring, then draws back with a measured exhale. The ship gives a small structural rattle beneath the floorboards as if it heard nothing and approved anyway.

Kael Umal

Kael Umal

Her pulse is steady. The exam is not ceremonial, then.

In the door’s keyhole, Miles’s eye lingers, then flicks away for a heartbeat before returning. Emma notices the watcher at last and does not break her composure.

Emma

Emma

You are being spied on, captain. I should say that is the first trouble of a ship with too many secrets.

Emma

Emma

Still, your body is sound. So tell me, do you want the honest report, or the private one?

“"Give me...the private report." the captain says. Outside the infirmary Miles still crouches low looking through the keyhole of the door. She blushes. Her heart races. She cannot pull away from watching the captain and the doctor”

Kael Umal

Give me the private report.

Emma folds the public chart aside and lowers her voice, her posture easing instead of hardening. The door stays shut, and the eye at the keyhole still peeks and vanishes in nervous little darts.

Emma

Emma

Your body is sound, captain. The deeper matter is not blood or bone, it is strain laid over duty too long.

Emma

Emma

That matters because your pulse steadies when you are met with honesty. I can work with that. I trust you more for asking plainly.

She slides a small folded note from beneath her cloth kit and taps it once against his palm, a private ledger of remedies and warnings. Somewhere above, the ship gives a soft structural rattle, as if settling into the moment.

Emma

Emma

There is one thing I did not say in front of the others. Your strain has a pattern to it, not a wound. I would like to keep watching that pattern, if you will let me.

“The captain agrees and bids her a good day. The captain returns to his room and passes by Miles who pretends to be swabbing the deck with a mop. The darkness of outer space is around the galleon ship in which they sail. Miles blushes and keeps her head down as the captain passes by. Later in the day Miles delivers the captain a tray of food to his cabin.”

Kael takes the note, then turns from the infirmary with the private report tucked away. The door remains shut behind him, and the ship gives a low structural rattle underfoot as he steps into the corridor.

Emma

Emma

Thank you for hearing me plainly, captain. Come again if the strain worsens, or if your heart gives you reason to hide it.

He moves past the corner where Miles is half-bent over a mop, the girl's head dropping fast as he passes. The deck is quiet enough to hear the soft swish of cloth and the distant hush of outer space pressing against the hull.

Back in his cabin, Kael finds the room waiting in the dim, his route clear at last. The folded note rests in hand like a small weight of trust, but the ship stays restless, as if listening.

Miles

Miles

Keep your head down. Don't let him look too long.

Later, a tray of food is set at his cabin door by careful hands, the simple offering landing with a faint clink. Somewhere beyond the bulkheads, the crew keeps its distance from the infirmary, and the Star Streak rides on in uneasy calm.

“The captain begins training Miles on the use of the flintlock pistol.”

Kael answers the waiting tray first, not with ceremony, but by calling Miles over and setting the lesson in motion at the cabin table. Emma lingers nearby, attentive and quiet, as if she is measuring more than appetite.

Miles

Miles

I brought your meal, captain. I, uh, knocked this time.

Miles steps inside with the tray balanced in both hands, careful now, her earlier mischief tucked behind a dutiful stare. The ship gives a faint rattle underfoot while the corridor outside stays hushed and empty.

Kael Umal

Kael Umal

Set it here. Watch the grip, then copy it.

Kael shows her how to hold the flintlock pistol, steady and plain. He keeps the instruction simple, and Miles follows it with a flush of concentration, shoulders tightening as she tries again.

Emma

Emma

Good. She listens when the task is clear, captain.

Emma folds the private note once more and tucks it away, her expression easing into professional approval. Miles finishes setting down the meal, then glances up at Kael with a brief, earnest hope that she has done the thing right.

“The captain asks Miles has she ever used a pistol. She says no. The captain walks behind her and shows her the basics.”

SUCCESS (Fair Leadership, rolled +0)

Kael steps in close behind Miles and corrects her grip with quiet precision. Her hands settle, then tighten, as she copies the angle of the pistol and the way he opens and closes the mechanism.

Kael Umal

Kael Umal

Have you ever used one before?

Miles

Miles

No, captain.

He walks her through the basics from behind, guiding her wrists and stance until the lesson clicks. Miles nods once, flushed with concentration, while the tray at the table trembles from a small bump against the cabin.

Emma

Emma

She is listening well. That matters more than speed.

Miles

Miles

I can do this right. I can.

Emma watches the pair with measured approval, then her gaze drops to Kael's posture, taking in the strain he still carries. The crew's usual distance from the infirmary feels less like fear now, and more like habit thinning at the edges.

Emma

Emma

Your report held. And this, too. You keep listening when it counts.

“After a while, the Star Streak stops moving for the day and the crew retire to their quarters. Sophie watches the rest of the crew through her crystal ball as she sits on her bed in her dark room. She watches mostly the captain, almost infatuated with him. She also studies the navigator, Maisie, recording messages in a secret book she keeps hidden. She watches Miles sneak around the ship spying on the captain as he moves about.”

Night settles over the Star Streak. In the dark of her room, Sophie bends over a crystal ball, its glow caught in one palm while her hidden book rests open on her knee.

The crystal shows Kael first, then shifts to Maisie, then to the narrow shadows where Miles keeps moving with too much caution for a cabin boy.

Sophie

Sophie

Captain, navigator, thief. Three currents, all pulling the ship.

She writes quickly, the secret book swallowing each note as the ship gives a faint structural rattle beneath the boards.

Sophie

Sophie

Miles watches him. Maisie records everything. Emma measures what the body hides.

The crystal dims on Kael's image, then brightens again as Miles slips from one corridor shadow into the next, still spying on the captain.

“Sophie watches until she gets tired and goes to sleep. Her time at the helm will begin again tomorrow so she needs restful sleep. In the morning she has breakfast, served by the cook Julia, and Sophie returns to the helm room with Maisie.”

By morning, Sophie finally folds over the crystal ball and sleeps while the cabin quiets around her. Later, Julia brings breakfast, and Sophie rises refreshed before heading back toward the helm with Maisie at her side.

“A day or so goes by and its the same routine. Sophie informs the captain that they are only about a day away from the asteroid outpost of Close Space Nine. The captain is pleased with the crew and heads off to the lavish washroom for a shower. Emma enters the shower with the captain. She asks the captain if he's relieved his stress for the day.”

Hours blur into the ship's steady sway, and the cabin grows quiet again. The *Star Streak* gives a low, stubborn shiver beneath the planks as the day drifts toward evening.

Sophie

Sophie

We are near Close Space Nine, captain. About a day, if the course holds.

Kael turns from the cabin window and heads for the lavish washroom, the breakfast tray left behind and the faint quiver in the floorboards following him like a warning he has learned to ignore.

Steam gathers around black stone and brass as he showers, the room soft with heat and the ship's distant groan.

Emma

Emma

Are you relieved of the day's stress, captain?

Kael Umal

Kael Umal

The washroom is warm, and Emma's voice stays calm.

Emma remains beside him in the steam, professional but gentler than before, as if the private report has settled into something steadier between them.

Emma

Emma

Your breathing is easier than earlier. I take that as a good sign.
