The Stalled Decision

The candle burns low. Hour after hour, the cabin stays shut and still, and the woods give nothing back. Benjamin and Elias wait for footsteps that never come.

Elias

Elias

They should be back by now.

Benjamin’s pacing slows near the table. The ration pile, the map, and the hidden cache feel smaller in the dim light, like the room itself is shrinking around the question of where Jenny, Louis, and Dane went.

Benjamin

Benjamin

The night’s gone quiet in a bad way.

Elias

Elias

We can still hold here. Maybe they’re taking cover and waiting out something.

Outside, a branch creaks somewhere deep in the dark. Not close, not yet, but enough to make the silence feel watched. Elias shifts his injured shoulder and looks to Benjamin for the call.

Elias

Elias

If we go, we risk losing the cabin. If we stay, we risk losing them. Which way do you want to play it?

The choice lands hard, because it reaches straight into the same fight they have been living since the outbreak, keep the sanctuary, or go after the missing and gamble the base.

Have Jenny and Louis been taken?

NO (Even, rolled 79)

The heavy door creaks open, revealing Jenny and Louis stepping out of the rain, their clothes soaked but their bodies unharmed. They have simply been delayed by a detour around a wandering pack of the undead.

"Oh thank god you two are back. Did you manage to find Dane?"

SUCCESS (Great Willpower, rolled +1)

The Stalled Decision
Benjamin

Benjamin

Oh thank God you two are back. Did you manage to find Dane?

Jenny

Jenny

We did. He is still out there, but he is safe. We had to swing wide around a pack to keep from bringing it here.

Louis

Louis

He held the perimeter route the whole time. Kept watching the treeline like it owed him money. Said to tell you he is coming back once he finishes circling the south side.

Jenny

Jenny

Benjamin's shoulders ease, and she notices it. For a second, the cabin feels less like a shelter under siege and more like a place people can actually return to.

Louis

Louis

We also found this tucked under a crate near the porch, probably from the stash we missed earlier.

Louis places a folded ration note into Benjamin's hand. The paper is damp, but the mark on it is clear enough to count another small reserve.

Jenny

Jenny

Not much, but enough to stretch one more night if we ration it right. And if Dane keeps his pace, he should be back before dark.

Wait for Dane to return

SUCCESS (Great Willpower, rolled +4)

The Stalled Decision

The room settles into a damp hush. Rain whispers through the open doorway while Benjamin keeps watch on the porch line, letting the others breathe.

Elias

Elias

Dane knows this route. If he said he would circle back, he will.

Louis

Louis

He always was stubborn enough to make good on a promise. Usually after making everyone wait for it.

Jenny

Jenny

At least he stayed alive long enough to be annoying about it.

Louis lets out a tired laugh, and the sound loosens some of the strain in the cabin. The ration note stays pinned between Benjamin's fingers, a small, real thing in the middle of all the waiting.

Elias

Elias

Count it with the rest. If Dane gets back before dark, we finally stop guessing and start planning the next meal properly.

The three of them fall quiet again, listening to rain, wood, and distant woods beyond the clearing. For a few heartbeats, the cabin feels held together by little more than shared patience.

"Can I speak with you privately for a moment, Jenny?"

SUCCESS (Legendary Leadership, rolled -2)

Benjamin catches Jenny’s eye and tips his head toward the back room, quiet and deliberate.

Benjamin

Benjamin

Can I speak with you privately for a moment, Jenny?

Jenny straightens at once, her rifle lowering as she studies his face.

Jenny

Jenny

Yeah. Give me a second.

She gestures for Louis and Elias to keep their voices down, then steps away from the table with Benjamin.

Louis

Louis

We will pretend we are not listening.

Elias

Elias

Take your time. The cabin can manage without us hovering for a minute.

Jenny pauses at the doorway to the back room, one hand still on her rifle strap, waiting for Benjamin to start.

"With all this going on I dont think we've had a moment just for us in a while. How are you holding up, babe?"

SUCCESS (Great Willpower, rolled +1)

Benjamin steps into the back room with Jenny, letting the cabin noise fade to a low hush behind them. Rain freckles the open doorway, but in here it is just the two of them and the soft creak of old boards.

Benjamin

Benjamin

With everything going on, we have not had a moment just for us in a while. How are you holding up, babe?

Jenny

Jenny

Her shoulders ease before she answers, rifle held loose at her side. "Honestly? Better now that you asked. I have been running on nerves and habit."

Jenny

Jenny

I am tired, Ben. Not broken, just tired. I keep looking at the door, then at everyone else, like if I blink too long something will slip past me.

She gives a small, crooked smile and leans her weight against the wall, finally allowing herself to rest for a second. Her eyes stay sharp, but the tension in her jaw loosens.

Jenny

Jenny

You do not have to carry all of this alone. I know you are trying to keep us upright, and I see it. I see you.

Jenny reaches for his hand, fingers warm and steady, and squeezes once before glancing back toward the doorway.

Jenny

Jenny

Tell me the truth, are you holding up, or are you just good at looking like you are?

"As long as I have you? I'll be alright. I love you, Jenny."

SUCCESS (Great Willpower, rolled +1)

The Stalled Decision
Benjamin

Benjamin

As long as I have you, I will be alright. I love you, Jenny.

Jenny

Jenny

Her breath catches, then she lets it out slow, eyes shining despite herself.

Jenny

Jenny

That is not fair, Ben. You cannot say that and expect me to stay calm.

She steps closer instead of backing away, her free hand finding the front of his shirt like she needs the proof of him there.

Jenny

Jenny

I love you too. I have been trying not to say it like it might break something.

Her grip steadies, and when she glances past his shoulder toward the rain and the open doorway, the fear in her face is still there, but it no longer owns the room.

Jenny

Jenny

Stay with me a second longer. Then we can go back out there together.

Share a passionate kiss with Jenny

SUCCESS (Great Willpower, rolled +0)

Benjamin closes the distance and kisses Jenny under the hush of rain and old wood. Her hand tightens at his shirt, then softens there, like she is choosing to stay in the moment.

Jenny

Jenny

For a second, the whole world narrows to this room and his mouth against hers.

When they part, Jenny stays close, forehead nearly touching his, breathing a little uneven but smiling despite herself.

Jenny

Jenny

You keep doing that, and I am going to forget how to be sensible.

Louis looks away on purpose, giving them the privacy of a few more heartbeats while Elias lowers his gaze to the table and lets the silence hold.

Elias

Elias

Take the win. In this world, you do not waste one.

Jenny glances toward the open doorway, then back to Benjamin, her expression warm but alert, already thinking about the dark outside and the people still missing.

Jenny

Jenny

Stay with me a little longer, then we go back out together and figure out what comes next.

Lean in and kiss her neck

SUCCESS (Great Willpower, rolled +2)

Benjamin tips his head in and brushes a kiss along Jenny’s neck, slow enough to feel deliberate, quiet enough to fit the rain. Her shoulders loosen under it, and her hand slides from his shirt to the back of his neck.

Jenny

Jenny

He always finds the exact place that makes it hard to stay sensible.

Jenny turns just enough to look at him, smiling with that tired warmth that still leaves room for caution. Her fingers stay at his collar, steadying him there like an answer.

Jenny

Jenny

You are making it very difficult to pretend I am not distracted.

At the table, Elias pretends to be fascinated by the grain in the wood. Louis huffs a quiet laugh without looking over, then returns to the doorway as rain mists across the threshold.

Elias

Elias

Let him have his victory. The cabin can survive a little tenderness.

Jenny rests her forehead against Benjamin’s for a beat, then glances past him toward the open room, where the others are waiting and the night is still unfinished.

Jenny

Jenny

Stay close while we sort the numbers, then we make the rest of the plan together.

"Now then... How about we go find Dane?"

SUCCESS (Legendary Leadership, rolled -2)

The Stalled Decision
Benjamin

Benjamin

Now then... how about we go find Dane?

The words settle the room. Louis straightens from the doorway at once, and Elias lifts his head from the table, attention snapping into place.

Louis

Louis

Yeah. We move together, quick and quiet.

Elias

Elias

I will take the lamp and the map. If he is out there, we do not wander blind.

Jenny

Jenny

Then let’s not waste another minute.

Jenny eases back from Benjamin and reaches for her rifle. Louis checks the rain-dark threshold, while Elias gathers the paper and light with practiced care.

The cabin shifts from waiting to motion. Chairs scrape softly, boots find the floor, and the open door admits a cold ribbon of mist.

Is Dane still near the cabin?

NO (Likely, rolled 79)

Benjamin steps out into the damp, grey woods, but the perimeter is silent and empty. A quick sweep of the immediate clearing reveals no sign of Dane, nor any fresh tracks leading away from the cabin.
