The foyer goes quiet after the bat falls still. Benjamin spreads Arthur’s map on the side table, smoothing the creases with one hand.

Jenny
She leans in, amber eyes tracking the circles. “These marks feel deliberate. Like he was trying to warn us where people kept moving.”

Louis
Louis studies the scribbles, then the hall beyond the foyer. “Or where he thought someone could hide. Either way, the house is bigger than we’ve been treating it.”

Mara Miller
Mara rubs at her wrist and nods toward the page. “He knew this place better than we did. That’s the part I don’t like. If he could miss a room, we could too.”

Dane
Dane folds his arms, gaze fixed on the map. “Then we check it right. Quietly. Room by room, no shortcuts.”

Elias
Elias looks from the note to the dim hallway, his face tight with thought. The warning is vague, but not random.
For a moment, nobody argues. The house settles around them, creaking softly in the dark, while the map lies open between tired hands and tired eyes.
“I check the hallway room by room”
SUCCESS (Superb Perception, rolled +1)

Benjamin eases off the table and turns toward the hallway, bat low at his side. The first door opens on a guest room stripped bare, but his eyes catch a fresh scuff line along the baseboard.
He crouches, runs his fingers along the trim, and finds a narrow seam hiding behind a loose strip of paneling. It gives under his hand with a soft click.
A shallow crawlspace yawns behind the wall, long ignored and just wide enough for a person to slip through if they knew it was there.

Jenny
That was not on Arthur’s little drawing.
Benjamin checks the next door, then the one after it. One room is storage, one is empty, and both are quiet, but each has marks on the floor where something has been dragged recently.

Louis
So the map was real, just incomplete. We have a hidden route in the house.

Mara Miller
And a place to stash supplies, if we seal it right.
From deeper in the hall, a thin tapping answers once more, patient and deliberate, as if whatever made it already knows Benjamin found the first secret.
“I follow the tapping down the hall”
SUCCESS (Superb Perception, rolled -1)

Benjamin steps away from the wall and follows the tapping deeper into the hall, bat loose in one hand, eyes tracking the baseboards.
The sound leads him past the empty rooms and stops at a second loose panel near the floor, hidden by a rug edge that has been shifted aside.

Benjamin
The marks are newer here.
He kneels, grips the panel, and pulls it free. A narrow service passage opens behind it, cramped but clear, with scrape lines running along the wood inside.

Jenny
Benjamin, what did you find?
From inside the passage, the tapping answers again, closer now, as if something has shifted to meet him.

Louis
If there is a route in there, we need to know where it runs.
“I go into the service passage”
SUCCESS (Great Agility, rolled +1)

Benjamin slips into the passage without getting hung up on the frame, the bat tucked in close as his shoulders angle sideways through the tight gap.
The crawlspace swallows him in dim wood and stale dust. The scrape marks run ahead of him like a warning trail, but they are old enough to be dry, not fresh blood.

Benjamin
It runs under the house.
His hand brushes a wall brace, then steadies. The tapping stops for a beat, somewhere beyond the bend, and then answers back from lower down the passage.

Jenny
Benjamin, can you see where it goes?

Louis
Call it out if you find a second exit.
Benjamin edges farther in and finds the passage opening into a cramped maintenance run, with a narrow ladder down and a thin seam of light leaking from below.
“I follow the tapping down the ladder”
SUCCESS (Great Agility, rolled +1)

Benjamin plants one hand on the ladder and starts down, bat tucked close so it does not catch on the narrow frame.
The metal creaks under his weight, but it holds. Dust sifts from the rungs and drifts through the thin beam of light below.

Benjamin
Fresh steps would have scuffed this climb.
He reaches the bottom cleanly and lands in a tight maintenance bay, the tapping sounding louder now from just ahead and to the right.
A narrow work lamp lies on its side near a coil of cable, throwing light across a blocked seam in the wall and a set of old handprints in the dust.
The tapping cuts off the moment Benjamin looks toward it, as if whatever made it heard him arrive.
From above, Jenny calls down softly, and Louis answers her with a low warning to stay put until Benjamin checks the room.
“I follow the handprints to the right”
SUCCESS (Superb Perception, rolled -1)

Benjamin angles his bat aside and studies the dust. The handprints are old, but the drag marks beside them are fresh.
He follows the wall to the right, slow and careful, tracing the prints until they bunch together at a darker section of seam.

Benjamin
This part gets touched more than the rest.
His fingers find a hidden latch tucked into the trim. The panel gives with a soft click and swings inward a few inches.
Cold air spills out of the gap, carrying a stale chemical smell and the faintest scrape from beyond the wall.

Jenny
Ben? What did you find down there?

Louis
If it moves, call it out. I am right here.
Inside the opening, a narrow service crawl is revealed, and the tapping starts again, this time somewhere deeper in the passage, waiting for his next move.
“I follow the tapping into the crawl”
SUCCESS (Good Stealth, rolled +1)

Benjamin slips through the crack without a sound, shoulders turned sideways to fit the narrow crawl.
The service passage swallows the lamp glow behind him, and the tapping shifts ahead, soft but steady.

Benjamin
The crawl slopes deeper than the hallway seam suggested.
He moves hand over hand past old dust, fresh scuffs, and a bend in the wall where the floor dips lower.
The tapping stops all at once.
Benjamin eases forward one more pace and finds a second hidden bay, cramped and lit by a dim, battery lamp, with a toolbox and a locked metal cabinet tucked against the far wall.
On the cabinet door, someone has scratched a crude house map and a single word, Pantry.
“I leave and inspect the pantry cabinet”
SUCCESS (Superb Perception, rolled +0)

Benjamin backs out of the crawl and drops into the hidden bay, keeping low as he turns toward the cabinet.
The scratched pantry map is not just a label, it marks a second seam in the cabinet door, like someone planned a false front.

Benjamin
It is a disguise, not storage.
He studies the lock, then works the panel edge and finds the hidden release tucked beneath the metal lip.
The cabinet gives with a dry click and swings open to reveal shelves of cans, jugs, and bundled supplies kept off the books.
Taped inside the door is a second scrap, a hand-drawn note pointing deeper under the house and reading, Do not open after dark.
From above the hatch, Jenny hisses for an update as Louis leans closer to see what Benjamin has found.
✓ Quest Accepted
Investigate the hidden pantry supplies
“I call up to Jenny and Louis to show them the hidden stash of supplies.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Leadership, rolled +2)

Benjamin lifts the open cabinet door higher and calls up for them to look. The hidden shelves glow in the lamp light, packed with food and water tucked away like a secret promise.

Jenny
You were right to keep digging. This is a real stash.

Louis
That changes everything. We are not just surviving off scraps now.
Jenny shifts her grip on the hatch frame and studies the shelves with a relieved, sharp-eyed smile. Louis leans farther in, attention locked on the jugs and cans as if he is already counting meals.

Jenny
Whoever hid this knew the house was supposed to last.

Louis
If there is a pantry under here, there may be more the map did not tell us.
Benjamin keeps one hand on the cabinet and points out the heavier items, showing them exactly what is usable and what should stay sealed. The quiet between them turns lighter, almost respectful.

Jenny
After this, I can actually picture holding the house.

Louis
Then show me the rest of it. If this place has another trick, I want to know it before night deepens.
