The company leaves the silver-barked camp with packs secured and follows the woodland track toward the nearest settlement. At a fork, a young adult woman with copper-brown skin, a sturdy build, and tightly wrapped black hair struggles beside a spice-laden cart, its wheel split beneath her.

Mira Venn

Mira Venn

Hold there, travelers! Unless one of you knows how to mend a wheel, I may be sleeping beside these spices tonight.

Lydia studies the fractured axle while Lioran shifts his medicine pouch forward. Saadia remains near Elion, watching the two roads and the merchant’s guarded expression.

Mira Venn

Mira Venn

That map says Karof, doesn’t it? I’m Mira Venn. The pass is still impassable, but an older route bends around it. Caravans have vanished there.

Mira Venn

Mira Venn

A few survivors came staggering back weeks ago. They spoke of the Varkraven Compact before fear took the rest of their words.

Saadia

Saadia

You know where this older route begins. Why offer a warning without giving us its location?

Mira Venn

Mira Venn

Because warnings are free, and exact directions are not. Mend my wheel, guard my cart to the next hamlet, or pay me, and I’ll tell you where the bypass starts.

The broken wheel creaks in the wind. Beyond the fork, one road disappears toward the blocked pass while the other sinks beneath older trees, offering no sign of what waits beyond them.

Secure a viable route toward Karof

“I’ll offer to guard Mira’s cart to the next hamlet. Mira gives me a look that is quite strange. She softly bites her lower lip, and with her voice changed, she says thank you and simply turns around and goes back to her cart. I look at my friends, shocked by what just happened. Saadia though does not look at me, she simply fixes Mira, and she’s visibly pissed. I’m confused, and a thought crosses my mind, but i brush it off, deeming it impossible. I tell the group that we should get moving, and we start moving”

I’ll guard your cart to the next hamlet.

Mira gives Elion a strange look. Her lips part, and she softly bites her lower lip before turning back toward the spice-laden cart.

Mira Venn

Mira Venn

Thank you.

The words leave Mira in a subtly altered voice. She offers no directions, price, or agreement, only returns to the broken wheel and begins gathering the reins.

Elion looks to his companions, shocked by the exchange. Saadia refuses to meet his eyes, fixing Mira with a furious stare while Lydia and Lioran watch in uneasy silence.

Elion Draemnor

Elion Draemnor

That reaction makes no sense.

Elion Draemnor

Elion Draemnor

We should get moving.

The companions leave the fork without Mira’s directions or a guard arrangement. Behind them, her cart remains at the roadside as the older trees close around the departing group.

“I tell The others we should question another traveller who knows the road. I then ask what was her deal earlier. Lydia, without looking at Elion, simply answers that she was flirting. I’m confused and Lioran adds that Lydia’s right. Lioran said that She wanted way more than i could think. that leaves me puzzled. I simply say that i don’t have time for her. As i say this, i meet Saadia’s gaze. For an instant, it seems like she’s, relieved. I get shy and tell the others that we should think about how we’re gonna get out of here to get go to Karof”

We should question another traveler who knows the road. But first, what was Mira’s deal earlier?

Lydia

Lydia

She was flirting.

Lioran

Lioran

Lydia’s right. She wanted far more than you seemed to understand.

Lydia keeps her eyes on the path, while Lioran’s explanation leaves Elion staring ahead. Behind them, Mira and her cart vanish among the trees, taking her directions with her.

Elion Draemnor

Elion Draemnor

I don’t have time for her.

As Elion says it, he meets Saadia’s gaze. Relief flickers across her face before she looks away, leaving him suddenly shy beneath the attention.

Elion Draemnor

Elion Draemnor

We should figure out how to get out of here and continue toward Karof.

Lioran

Lioran

Then we should not search this fork for another traveler. Mira’s cart was headed toward the next hamlet. If we reach that road, someone there may know the bypass, and we can choose our route from actual directions.

The companions take the road Mira’s cart used, leaving the fork behind. Its ruts wind beneath older trees, where crushed spice leaves still cling to the damp earth.

Lioran

Lioran

The tracks are fresh enough to follow. If the hamlet lies ahead, we should reach it before dusk and ask about the bypass there.

Elion keeps the group moving at a steady pace, choosing firmer ground around muddy bends. Lydia watches the surrounding woods while Saadia listens for anything beyond the trees.

Saadia

Saadia

Mira may have expected us to come this way. Still, a hamlet is safer than trusting a rumor alone. We ask questions before accepting any route.

By late afternoon, the trees thin around a small hamlet gathered beside a narrow stream. Smoke rises from clay chimneys, and a rough timber sign marks the road ahead as a traveled way.

Lydia

Lydia

We made it. Keep close while we find someone who knows these roads, and we may finally learn where that bypass begins.

Elion Draemnor

The hamlet is reached before dusk, and the road continues beyond it.

“Should we take this opportunity to take a small break before continuing? I wanna take some time to hone my skills”

Should we take a short break here? I want to hone my melee skills before we continue.

Lydia guides the group to a level patch beside the stream. While Lioran checks the packs and Saadia watches the road, Elion draws his weapon and begins measured practice.

Lydia

Lydia

Keep your feet beneath you, Elion. Power matters less when your balance cannot answer it.

Elion works through cuts, guards, and quick recoveries until the sequence settles into his muscles. On the final pivot, his boot slips against wet soil, and his shoulder strikes the trunk hard enough to leave it bruised.

Saadia

Saadia

That was good practice, despite the bruise. Rest it briefly, then we can continue without turning a lesson into an injury.

Lioran

Lioran

The shoulder is tender, but nothing feels damaged. Give me a minute to wrap it, and the road will still be waiting.

Lioran binds Elion’s shoulder securely. The brief break leaves the technique sharpened and the cost clear: a spreading ache beneath the cloth, carried alongside the road toward the hamlet.

“I ask Lioran if it is possible to heal me using his Healing magic, because i wanna keep practicing. I then continue that i know that it sounds selfish, but i think that i’ve been greatly lacking in my skills and i want to be strong enough to protect you guys. I bow and beg them to comprehend my situation and accept.”

Lioran, can your healing magic mend this? I want to keep practicing. I know that sounds selfish, but I have been lacking in my skills, and I want to become strong enough to protect you all.

Elion bows despite the ache pulling across his wrapped shoulder, lowering his head before Lioran and the others. His request hangs quietly beside the stream.

Elion Draemnor

Elion Draemnor

Please understand my situation and accept this. I do not want to remain weak while you are relying on me.

Lioran

Lioran

I understand why you are asking, but I cannot simply erase the warning your body has given us. I can ease the pain, not make this shoulder ready for more blows.

Lioran rests a hand near the bandage, then stops short of casting. The unfinished gesture makes the limit plain, while Elion’s shoulder continues its dull, spreading ache.

Lydia

Lydia

You are not selfish for wanting strength. But protecting us means knowing when practice becomes harm. Let the lesson settle before you demand another one.

Saadia

Saadia

Rest now, Elion. Then Lioran can show you exercises that sharpen your technique without striking through the injury. That is still a path forward.

“I sigh mad and disappointed at myself and tell them that i understand. I pack up my stuff, and tell them we should get moving. I’m such a failure, i keep thinking. Why am i like this, why must i always fail what i do? Am i cursed? How am i going to slay dragons or defeat foes worthy of a divine title if i slip in my own training, im thinking to myself. I’m so frustrated i could cry. Saadia noticing Elion’s silent emotional shakiness, tells the group that they should rent the inn and take some rest before continuing tomorrow. Understanding what she’s trying to do, they agree. Elion doesn’t add anything but he’s somewhat greatful even though he still feels frustrated.”

Elion Draemnor

Elion Draemnor

I understand. We should get moving.

Elion sighs, anger and disappointment tightening his breath. He gathers his belongings with careful movements, the wrapped shoulder aching when he draws the pack into place.

Elion Draemnor

Elion Draemnor

I keep failing. How can I slay dragons or face foes worthy of divine titles if I cannot even master my own training? Am I cursed?

His eyes burn, and he keeps his face lowered so the others will not see how close frustration has brought him to tears. Saadia notices anyway.

Saadia

Saadia

We should rent rooms at the inn and rest until tomorrow. Continuing now will not make anyone stronger.

Lydia

Lydia

Agreed. A proper rest will serve us better than forcing the road tonight.

Lioran nods and adjusts his medicine pouch, accepting the change without protest. Elion says nothing, but quiet gratitude reaches him beneath the lingering frustration as the company turns toward the hamlet’s inn.

“I rent a room and we go to the inn, to our rooms”

The companions reach the hamlet inn as dusk settles over the stream. Its low timber walls lean around a warmly lit doorway, and voices murmur within.

Behind the counter, a broad elderly man with weathered skin, white hair, and a green wool vest looks up from a ledger. A brass key-ring hangs at his belt.

Beren Holt

Beren Holt

Rooms, then? I have two adjoining chambers left. They cost more than usual tonight because a caravan took the cheaper beds.

The price takes longer to confirm than expected. Lioran studies the innkeeper’s worn rate board, while Elion spends precious minutes checking whether another lodging exists nearby.

Lydia

Lydia

We will take them. A safe roof matters more than a few coins, especially with Elion’s shoulder still healing.

The innkeeper accepts their payment and hands over two keys. Lydia and Lioran take one room, while Elion and Saadia receive the other, adjoining through a thin wooden wall.

Beren Holt

Beren Holt

I’m Beren Holt. Supper ends soon, but I’ll keep water outside your doors. The road can wait until morning.

The companions climb the creaking stairs and enter their rooms. The beds are plain but clean, and the delayed search leaves the bypass question unresolved until tomorrow.

Elion settles onto the nearest bed, keeping his bruised shoulder supported while the inn’s muted voices drift through the adjoining rooms. Lydia, Lioran, and Saadia leave him to rest.

Lydia

Lydia

We are looking for reliable directions around the blocked pass. Has anyone here traveled toward Karof recently?

Through the thin wall, chairs scrape and several guests answer at once. Lioran gently separates rumor from certainty while Saadia listens for any mention of the older route.

Lioran

Lioran

Please tell us only what you witnessed or heard from someone who traveled there. We would rather take a longer road than trust a frightened guess.

Saadia

Saadia

The bypass begins beyond the stream, does it not? We need to know which turn marks its entrance and whether caravans still use it.

The conversation continues for several quiet minutes. By the time the door opens again, the companions have gathered a rough direction and a warning to confirm it with the innkeeper before leaving.

Lydia

Lydia

Rest, Elion. We found something useful, and we will check it properly in the morning.

“I ask Beren to confirm the bypass directions”

SUCCESS (Fair Reasoning, rolled +0)

Elion Draemnor

Elion Draemnor

Beren, could you confirm the bypass directions we heard from the guests? I want to be certain before we leave.

Elion finds Beren behind the inn’s counter, where the elderly innkeeper closes his ledger and studies the rough route described through the adjoining room.

Beren Holt

Beren Holt

They have it mostly right. Follow the stream beyond the last cottages, then take the eastern track where the old way divides. That road bends around the blocked pass and reaches Karof.

Beren Holt

Beren Holt

Do not take the higher trail marked by the leaning stones. It leads toward the ruined caravan road, not the bypass. The eastern track is the one still used by careful travelers.

Beren repeats the landmarks slowly until Elion can place each turn in order. The confirmation is clear, though the exchange consumes enough time for the supper room to empty and the inn to settle into night.

Lydia

Lydia

Good. We have a route, and we know which trail to avoid. I will tell the others so nobody confuses the two.

When Elion returns upstairs, Lydia, Lioran, and Saadia listen as he relays Beren’s directions. The bypass is settled for morning, with the lost minutes paid in a later, quieter departure.
