The ledger is beneath the roadside merchant shrine at the eastern crossroads. Lift the loose foundation stone marked with three cuts. The cipher key is ash, crown, river, seven.

Kareth folds the parchment and steps away from the road, keeping his hands visible. Saadia, Lydia, Oskar, and Elion leave him behind while Lioran remains at the Academy to assist the healers.

The crossroads lies quiet beneath a gray sky. A weathered merchant shrine leans beside the road, its carved saint worn smooth by rain and years of passing hands.

Fresh tracks cut through the damp earth toward the eastern trail. Nearby, a discarded courier cloak lies tangled in thornbushes, its empty folds suggesting a hurried departure.

Saadia

Saadia

There are two seals beneath the dust. The first bears Haldvar’s mark, but this second one belongs to my family’s fallen house.

Beneath the shrine’s loose foundation stone, the ledger waits inside a wax-sealed oilskin. Haldvar’s mark darkens the seal, while a smaller crest rests beside it, unmistakably Saadia’s ancestral sign.

Kareth Voss

Kareth Voss

I will remain here. Read it, test the cipher, and decide what the seal means. I will not interfere unless the signal forces my hand.

Behind them, Kareth keeps his distance near the road’s fork. The ledger lies within reach, and the fresh tracks vanish toward the eastern trail as the company stands before its unanswered evidence.

“I lift the stone and take the sealed ledger”

SUCCESS (Great Strength, rolled +2)

Elion wedges his fingers beneath the loosened foundation stone and lifts. The stone comes free with a gritty scrape, revealing the wax-sealed oilskin beneath.

He takes the sealed ledger from its shallow hiding place. Damp earth clings to the oilskin, but both wax seals remain intact.

Saadia

Saadia

There it is. Haldvar’s mark is undisturbed, and my family crest is still beside it.

Lydia watches the road with her shield ready while Oskar studies the fresh tracks. Kareth remains near the fork, hands visible and distance preserved.

Kareth Voss

Kareth Voss

You have the ledger. That is the proof I promised. Whether you open it or carry it away, the choice is yours.

Saadia

Saadia

The seal of my fallen house should not be here unless someone wanted this ledger found by me.

The ledger rests securely in Elion’s possession, heavy with unanswered claims. The eastern trail waits beyond the shrine, while the gray morning holds its silence.

The Ledger Beneath the Shrine
Saadia
Saadia

Elion settles the oilskin ledger on the shrine’s worn step. Saadia kneels beside him, while Lydia watches the road and Oskar keeps the eastern tracks in sight.

He breaks Haldvar’s wax seal with careful pressure, then loosens the second seal bearing Saadia’s ancestral crest. Neither ward flares, and the ledger opens cleanly beneath his hands.

Saadia

Saadia

The first pages are written in a merchant cipher. Use Kareth’s key: ash, crown, river, seven.

The cipher yields under the sequence. Columns of names, payments, and routes emerge, followed by repeated references to an archive signal and a living key.

Saadia

Saadia

There. My family’s crest marks the entries. They were not protecting the archive. They were searching for it before my house fell.

A final route is inked across the inside cover: the eastern trail, a ruined waystation, and a meeting marked for the seventh night. Beneath it, Haldvar’s name appears beside a warning: do not let Saadia reach the sealed object.

“I ask Kareth to mislead Haldvar's agents.”

Kareth, mislead Haldvar's agents. Give them a trail that draws them away from Saadia and the sealed object.

Kareth Voss

Kareth Voss

I can do that. The ledger already gives us a convincing eastern trail, and the meeting mark will make the lie believable.

Kareth crouches beside the shrine and studies the route inside the ledger. He traces a second path through the mud, leading away from the eastern trail toward an abandoned quarry.

Saadia

Saadia

Make it appear that I carried the ledger there. If they believe I am following the false route, they will search the quarry before the waystation.

Kareth Voss

Kareth Voss

Then I will leave signs of haste, a copied fragment of the cipher, and word that Saadia was seen taking the quarry path. Their attention will follow the evidence.

He presses a false route into the wet earth and tears a ciphered scrap from the ledger’s blank margin. The deception is ready before the morning mist lifts.

Kareth Voss

Kareth Voss

It is done. Haldvar’s agents will chase the quarry trail, while you take the true eastern road. I will reinforce the lie and keep them occupied.

“Can Kareth keep Haldvar's agents away from the eastern road?”

Kareth finishes the false trail and withdraws toward the quarry. For several quiet breaths, only mist and dripping branches answer him.

Then two figures appear along the northern ridge. Haldvar’s agents study the copied cipher scrap, but one points toward the eastern road instead of the quarry.

Kareth Voss

Kareth Voss

They recognized the margin. The lie drew their eyes, but not their judgment. They are sending one pair after the quarry and another toward the waystation.

The agents divide beyond the ridge. One group follows Kareth’s false signs, while the other disappears through a narrow alder hollow that reaches the eastern road ahead of the company.

Saadia

Saadia

Then the eastern road is no longer hidden. But their split gives us something useful: the alder hollow is a shorter approach, and they have exposed which route they trust.

Kareth Voss

Kareth Voss

I will keep the quarry pursuit occupied. You can reach the hollow before the second party reaches the waystation, if you choose that path.

Elion leads Saadia, Lydia, and Oskar into the alder hollow, following the agents’ faint passage through wet leaves and low branches. The cramped path bends more sharply than expected.

The hollow divides around a flooded dip. Elion chooses the narrower branch, but it curls back toward the ridge, forcing the company through thorny undergrowth instead of shortening their approach.

Saadia

Saadia

This is not the eastern road. We have looped north, and the agents’ trail is fading beneath ours.

A muffled branch crack sounds beyond the alder screen. Through the rain-dark trunks, two Haldvar agents cross the open ground ahead, already beyond interception and unaware of the company.

Lydia

Lydia

They have passed us. Chasing now would expose everyone and leave Kareth’s false trail uncovered.

Saadia

Saadia

The hollow cannot take us to them anymore. We must choose another approach before the waystation becomes their warning instead of ours.

The company emerges at a muddy break beneath the ridge, separated from the agents by the flooded dip and exposed ground. The hollow is no longer a viable route for an interception.

Elion turns onto the true eastern road, guiding Saadia, Lydia, and Oskar away from the flooded dip. The open ground offers firmer footing and a clear view of the ridge.

They move quickly beneath the gray rain. Behind them, the alder hollow conceals their departure, while the agents’ passage remains pointed toward the waystation ahead.

Saadia

Saadia

The road is carrying us toward the waystation. If the agents reach it first, they may still believe we are behind them.

Lydia

Lydia

Then we arrive before they can prepare for us. Keep moving, and let the road hide our numbers.

The eastern road descends between wet birches and broken milestones. Ahead, beyond a bend, a low roof appears through the rain: the ruined waystation marked in the ledger.

Oskar

Oskar

There it is. We made it before the trail vanished completely.

Elion and his companions reach the waystation. Its sagging doors stand beneath a faded merchant emblem, while fresh footprints cross the mud toward the dark entrance.

The entrance has been used recently, but I cannot tell how many people went inside.

He checks the nearest window and finds no movement beyond the warped boards. When he tests the doorway, his boot catches a nearly invisible cord beneath the threshold.

A small iron bell rings somewhere inside the waystation. The sound is brief but clear, carrying through the empty structure and into the rain.

Saadia

Saadia

That was an alarm. We no longer have the advantage of entering unseen.

The bell’s echo dies, and movement answers from within. Through a gap in the warped shutters, two Haldvar agents hurry across the entry hall, already alerted and gathering near the inner passage.

Saadia

Saadia

They are inside. The alarm did more than warn them. It gave them time to prepare for us.

One agent drags a heavy table across the main corridor while the other disappears toward the rear rooms. Their hurried barricade leaves the entrance obstructed, but not sealed.

Lydia

Lydia

At least they have not fled. If they meant to abandon the waystation, that bell would have bought them distance instead of a barrier.

A second sound follows from within: a latch dropping, then the scrape of something being pulled across the back door. The agents have secured their retreat and know the company is outside.

Saadia

Saadia

They expected pursuit, or recognized the warning from the ledger. Either way, the waystation is occupied, and they are waiting for us.

“I force through the barricade and secure the ledger”

SUCCESS (Great Strength, rolled -2)

The Ledger Beneath the Shrine

Elion drives his shoulder into the barricaded table. Wood groans, iron fittings shriek, and the obstruction gives way into the corridor, though the impact bruises his shoulder and sends him stumbling against the wall.

The broken table skids aside. Elion reaches the inner room and finds Haldvar’s ledger on a narrow desk beside the rear passage, its dark cover marked with the Varkraven seal.

Haldvar agent 2

Haldvar agent 2

You should have stayed outside.

The agent, a young adult man with a lean build, weathered tan skin, short dark hair, and a dark brown leather coat over travel-worn gray clothes, lunges to block the desk, but Elion gets there first. He seizes the ledger, pulls it against his chest, and secures it beneath his coat before the agent can reach him.

Haldvar agent 1

Haldvar agent 1

The ledger is lost! Fall back from the rear door!

Saadia, Lydia, and Oskar cross the shattered threshold behind him. The ledger is safely in Elion’s possession, but his shoulder throbs sharply beneath the torn fabric where the barricade struck him.

The door is blocked. We are trapped between the shrine and the rear wall.

A haldvar agent reaches the rear door and stops short, finding the narrow exit already denied. His hand closes around the latch, but he does not open it.

Saadia

Saadia

They cannot escape through the back. The ledger has forced them into the open, Elion.

Lydia plants herself across the inner corridor, shield raised, while Oskar fills the space beside her. The agents are cut off from both exits, with the stolen ledger secured beneath Elion’s coat.

Haldvar agent 2

Haldvar agent 2

Fine. Keep the ledger. But you have no idea what Haldvar will send when he learns you took it.

“Haldvar will kill you if he knows you have failed to protect the ledger. Now tell us what is he up to. Or you could fight your way out of this. Then, Saadia adds that she’s hungry and hasn’t eaten for days as she licks her vampire teeths. What will you do i ask the two agents? Elion Draemnor

Elion Draemnor

What will you do? Talk, or force us to take the answers from you?

Haldvar agent 2

Haldvar agent 2

Threats do not make you feared, young man. Haldvar is moving the sealed object before nightfall, and this ledger was only the route to it.

The agent’s voice remains steady, though his eyes flick toward Kharul’vok. The other agent shifts behind Lydia’s shield line, abandoning any attempt to reach the blocked door.

Haldvar agent 1

Haldvar agent 1

The meeting is at the old quarry, not here. Haldvar expects the living key to follow the false trail. You have already ruined his timing.

“I plant my feet on the ground and dash so fast i end up in front of the first Haldvar agent. Pressing my sword Kharul'vok against his throat, i tell him: You will gather information for us, and we will meet after the meeting and you will expose everything to us. Have i made myself clear?”

You will gather information for us, and we will meet after the meeting. You will expose everything to us. Have I made myself clear?

Haldvar agent 1

Haldvar agent 1

But understand the cost of this. Haldvar will know someone forced me to betray him, and I will tell him your face, your blade, and exactly where you stood.

His promise is secured, but secrecy is not. The agent now carries Elion’s identity into Haldvar’s meeting, while Kharul’vok remains steady at his throat and the room waits for what comes next.

“Then why should i let you live? I say looking down to him”

SUCCESS (Fair Intimidation, rolled +0)

Elion Draemnor

Elion Draemnor

Then why should I let you live?

Elion looks down at the surrendered agent, Kharul’vok steady beneath his throat. The threat strips away his practiced defiance, while the second agent watches from behind Lydia’s shield.

Haldvar agent 1

Haldvar agent 1

Because dead men cannot lead you to Haldvar’s meeting, and I can. I know the signal phrase, the guards’ arrangement, and what he intends to move before nightfall.

His answer gives Elion a reason to spare him, but the agent’s eyes remain calculating. By threatening him publicly, Elion has also made the man’s fear of betrayal impossible to conceal.

Haldvar agent 1

Haldvar agent 1

Keep me alive, and I become useful. Kill me, and you lose the only witness who can prove what Haldvar is moving. But I will remember this blade at my throat, and that debt will not become loyalty.

Saadia

Saadia

He has given you leverage, Elion, but not allegiance. If you spare him, make certain his information is worth the trust his fear will never provide.

“I start laughing. This is funny i say while dropping down my blade. Then i get serious again. I look him dead in the eyes and tell him that i don’t intend on let him live. I then explain to him that i was at Zahareen when he destroyed the capital 8 years ago. I add that he killed my Uncle. Haldvar is wicked. Even his most trusted soldier, Berenos, he would kill him if he desired. Haldvar is a psychopath, i tell them. You don’t seem to understand that the only things that will happen is that you expose me and he kills both of you, or you don’t even have time to expose me and he kills both of you. Do you both do not understand in what type of hopeless situation you’re in?”

SUCCESS (Fair Intimidation, rolled +0)

Elion starts laughing. The sound cuts through the cramped waystation, then he lowers Kharul’vok from the agent nearest the hollow’s throat without taking his eyes from the surrendered man.

Elion Draemnor

Elion Draemnor

Elion Draemnor

Either you expose me and Haldvar kills both of you, or he kills you before you have time to expose me. Those are the only outcomes. Do you understand how hopeless this is?

The lowered blade gives the agent room to breathe, but the confession destroys the usefulness of his earlier bargain. His leverage remains, yet any promise he makes now will be born from fear rather than cooperation.

Haldvar agent 1

Haldvar agent 1

I understand. You are not offering mercy, only a choice between dying here and walking into the same execution later. I will give you the signal phrase and the arrangement, but do not mistake that for loyalty.

“I turn and ask Lydia, Saadia and Oskar what we should do with them”

SUCCESS (Legendary Reasoning, rolled -1)

Elion Draemnor

Elion Draemnor

Lydia, Saadia, Oskar, what should we do with them?

The question turns the room’s attention from the ledger to the two surrendered agents. Lydia keeps her shield between them and the others, while Saadia studies their faces.

Lydia

Lydia

Keep them alive for now. Bind their hands, separate them, and make them tell us the signal phrase and guard arrangement without giving either one a chance to coordinate.

Saadia

Saadia

I agree, but we should not trust their information merely because they fear Haldvar. Question them separately, then compare every detail before we approach the quarry.

Oskar

Oskar

We could take them with us. If they know the meeting place, they can point out the guards and keep us from walking into a trap.

The agents exchange a guarded glance. Lydia reaches for cord from her travel gear, and Saadia moves toward the nearer man while Oskar watches the rear passage.

“Do both agents know Haldvar’s signal phrase?”

NO, AND WORSE (Unlikely, rolled 87)

Lydia binds the nearer agent’s wrists, then seats him against the inner wall. Saadia leads the second agent into the rear room while Oskar guards the passage.

Saadia

Saadia

Tell me the signal phrase exactly. Do not guess, and do not repeat what you think the other agent heard.

Haldvar agent 1

Haldvar agent 1

I do not know it. I heard only the first word, spoken once at the quarry: “Ash.” The rest was concealed from me.

Haldvar agent 2

Haldvar agent 2

I know no phrase. I was given a hand sign and told to answer whoever used it. No words reached me.

The answers do not match, but neither contains the complete phrase. Then the ledger’s Varkraven seal splits with a soft crack, and black lettering spreads across its cover.

Haldvar agent 1

Haldvar agent 1

That is not a signal for us. It is a summons. Someone outside has just spoken the true phrase, and the waystation has answered.

“What does it mean?”

The Ledger Beneath the Shrine
Elion Draemnor

Elion Draemnor

What does it mean?

The black lettering crawls across the ledger’s cover, forming a single message beneath the Varkraven seal: SUMMONS ACKNOWLEDGED. ROUTE CONFIRMED. LIVING KEY EXPECTED.

Haldvar agent 1

Haldvar agent 1

It means someone used the true phrase close enough for the ledger to hear it. The seal is answering them, not calling us.

Haldvar agent 2

Haldvar agent 2

The route confirmed must be this waystation. The living key means Saadia. Haldvar’s people expected her to arrive here.

The lettering shifts again, revealing a faint eastern mark before settling into stillness. No summons leaves the ledger, and no unseen presence enters the room.

Saadia

Saadia

Then the message confirms their destination and their expectation, but not that Haldvar himself is here. We should read every mark before deciding what it reveals.
