Holding the Line at the Vestibule

The corridor jolts as the brakes scream against the rails. Frost cracks across the vestibule glass while the latch bows under pounding fists outside.

Sharp Archer plants his feet by the door, Garand up. The Operative snaps his sidearm into line beside him, both men braced for the next shove.

At the rear, Agnes Bell and Mallory drag the satchel into place over the hidden charges. The dossier page is secured, flattened against the seat by Agnes's hand.

Mallory

Mallory

Hold them there, we are almost set!

The Operative

The Operative

Keep steady. One breach, then we close it.

A fresh blow rattles the frame. One pane spiders with white cracks, but the door holds for now, giving the team a sliver of time.

Behind Archer, Agnes clamps the last lead into place and looks up, grimly relieved. The sabotage is nearly ready, if the line can stay closed a little longer.

✓ Quest Accepted

Hold off the attackers until the charges are armed

I attach my beyonette to my rifle and prepare to start the fight

SUCCESS (Good Melee Combat, rolled +2)

Holding the Line at the Vestibule

Sharp Archer snaps the bayonet onto the Garand with a metallic click, then tests it with one hard twist. It locks in clean.

Outside, the door shudders again. The cracked pane throws cold light across the blade and the tense line of Archer’s rifle.

The Operative

The Operative

Good. If they force it, make them pay for every inch.

Agnes Bell

Agnes Bell

Lead is secure. We just need a little longer.

Mallory

Mallory

Then keep them busy, Archer. I am sealing the last link now.

A heel slams into the vestibule door. The latch screams, the frame flexes, and a thin spray of frost shakes loose from the glass.

Sharp Archer

Sharp Archer

The bayonet is on. The door is not.

Another удар rattles the carriage, and the team braces in the narrowing gap between steel and seconds.

I use an enchanted shot to shoot through the doors and stop whoever was beating them in.

SUCCESS (Legendary Arcane ballistics, rolled -2)

Holding the Line at the Vestibule

Sharp Archer sights through the cracked pane and fires once. The round punches through the failing wood and glass with a sharp crack.

Outside, the blows stop all at once. A body drops out of view, and the pressure on the door eases for a breath.

But the shot answers the station, too. A warning shout ripples somewhere beyond the vestibule, and boots start moving in the platform slush.

A splinter of glass bites Archer’s cheek as the recoil jars his shoulder. The Garand jumps, smoke threading past his face.

The Operative

The Operative

Nice shot. Move, they heard that.

Agnes Bell

Agnes Bell

Charge is set. I need only the final cap.

Mallory

Mallory

Then hold them for one more second.

The buckling door sags inward, now quieter but far more exposed, while the dossier page flutters under Agnes Bell’s hand at the rear.

I hear the artifact of the old gods whispering to me as I look back at it.

SUCCESS (Good Willpower, rolled +3)

Holding the Line at the Vestibule

Archer lets the Garand settle and looks back toward the rear of the carriage. The artifact in the dossier page seems to drink the lamplight, and a low whisper threads through the noise of the stalled train.

Sharp Archer

Sharp Archer

The mark is speaking.

The whisper sharpens into a pattern, old and dry, like words remembered through stone. It does not sound like the platform, or the men outside. It sounds ancient, and it answers his attention.

The Operative

The Operative

You hear that too, then. Good. Means we are not imagining the worst of this.

Agnes Bell

Agnes Bell

Final cap is on. Once I twist it, the charge is live.

Mallory

Mallory

And once it is live, nobody touches that page again unless they want the whole job ruined.

The whisper fades to a faint prickle at the edge of hearing, but leaves Archer with a clear, unwelcome certainty, the dossier page is more than paper. Behind him, the charges are set and waiting for the last turn.

✓ Quest Accepted

Uncover the meaning of the whispering mark

After she sets the charge, i tell them all to start running and cover their ears as I magically cast my next bullet to be a flash bang

SUCCESS (Legendary Arcane ballistics, rolled -2)

Holding the Line at the Vestibule

Sharp Archer lifts the Garand, voice hard and low, and snaps the order for them to run and cover their ears. He feeds the next round with a flick of focus, and the cartridge glows at the chamber like a struck match.

The Operative flinches into motion, dragging himself clear of the table. Agnes Bell clamps both hands over her ears and ducks behind the charge case. Mallory jerks back from the wiring, eyes wide at the rifle muzzle.

The shot cracks and blossoms inside the cramped carriage as a white flash, a concussive flare that hammers the vestibule and turns the doorway into a sheet of glare. Dust jumps from the frame, and the sagging door shudders under the blast.

The Operative

The Operative

Move, move, move!

Agnes Bell swallows the shock and slams the final cap home with one clenched hand while the other shields her face. Mallory catches the mark on the dossier page, then fumbles the wired bundle into a guarded tuck against his chest.

Mallory

Mallory

That buys us seconds, not miracles.

Beyond the blown-out glare, feet scrape on the platform and a shadow bunches at the threshold. The team has the charge armed, but the blast has also announced exactly where they are.
