Trapped in the Winter Yard

Sharp Archer and Agnes Bell crouch behind rusted containers as the freight yard freezes around them. Ahead, the extraction route is cut by a sweep of flashlights and boots in snow.

The Operative

Wait for the gap. They are hunting with discipline, not panic.

One pursuer pauses near a signal crate, the beam skimming low, then drifting back toward the warehouse door. The artifact in Archer’s grip feels hot enough to burn through his gloves.

Sharp Archer

The left flank is thinner. If they move now, they can reach the rail cars.

Agnes Bell

Agnes Bell

There, by the coal wagons. They have not seen us yet.

The Operative lifts two fingers, then points to a gap between boxcars. The team has a route, but the pursuers are already angling to cut it off.

Then we run the yard edge, keep low, and do not stop.

Snow swirls under the container shadows as Sharp Archer prepares to move, the artifact still the prize and the danger, while the hunted team commits to the only exit left.

✓ Quest Accepted

Reach the extraction point

I use my magic to cause a massive amount of wind to kick up the snow, making it hard for anyone to see

SUCCESS (Legendary Arcane ballistics, rolled +0)

Trapped in the Winter Yard

Sharp Archer snaps his focus wide and lets the wind answer. Snow lifts off the rails in a hard, sudden sheet, swallowing the gap between boxcars.

The pursuers’ flashlights smear into pale streaks, their beams lost in the churn. Boots skid in the drift as the line of men breaks its clean shape.

The Operative

The Operative

That is our cover. Move on my signal.

Agnes Bell lunges from the container shadow, dossier page clutched to her chest, while Mallory rises into the whiteout at the boxcar wheel.

Mallory

Mallory

Keep low, keep together. The yard is blind now.

A whistle cracks somewhere beyond the snow curtain, then another voice shouts an order that does not carry far. The extraction route is no longer watched cleanly, but the yard is waking up angry.

Agnes Bell

Agnes Bell

Archer, if we are going, we go now.

I use the snow cover to slip past

SUCCESS (Great Agility, rolled +2)

Trapped in the Winter Yard

Sharp Archer lowers into the drift and slips with the storm, letting the whiteout swallow his outline. The artifact stays tucked close as he moves between the boxcars and the blind angles of the yard.

A flashlight beam sweeps past where he stood, finds only snow and steam, then slides on. The men beyond the curtain keep shouting at ghosts.

Ahead, the narrow rail gap opens into a service lane half-buried in powder. It is clear enough for one hard push, not enough for a formation.

The Operative

The Operative

Now. Take the lane.

Agnes Bell darts after the signal, dossier page still pinned to her chest, while Mallory follows low and quick at the wagon wheels.

Behind them, the pursuers’ line blurs into confusion, their lights cut apart by wind and distance. The yard no longer holds them in a clean trap.

Agnes Bell

Agnes Bell

Keep moving, Archer. I am not losing that page now.

I cut left and let the snow hide us

SUCCESS (Great Agility, rolled +2)

Trapped in the Winter Yard

Sharp Archer cuts left on instinct, and the whole party follows the bend between the cars. The snow takes their outlines and turns them into moving shadows.

A beam from behind stabs into the lane, wavers, then loses them in the drifting white. The pursuers have the yard, but not a clean target.

The Operative

The Operative

Good. Keep the angle. Do not let them get a straight line on us.

Agnes Bell hugs the dossier page tighter and slips into the new cover, her breath white in the cold. Mallory glances back once, then vanishes behind the boxcar wheel shadow.

Agnes Bell

Agnes Bell

We move now, while they are blind.

The storm swallows the team’s trail as the service lane bends toward a darker opening ahead. Somewhere behind them, voices snap orders into the wind.

Are the pursuers still on our trail?

NO, BUT (Likely, rolled 70)

The shouting behind them fades into the howling wind, and the rhythmic clatter of boots on gravel ceases entirely. The pursuers have lost the trail in the blinding whiteout, but the team remains trapped in the labyrinth of the yard.

I push through the snow toward the extraction point

SUCCESS (Good Health, rolled +1)

Trapped in the Winter Yard

Sharp Archer lowers his shoulder into the snowfall and pushes down the narrow lane between boxcars, boots biting through crusted drifts.

The others follow in a staggered line behind him, each figure stripped to a dark shape by the storm, while the yard falls silent around them.

Ahead, the lane opens onto the extraction point, a half-buried gap beside stacked freight crates and a waiting vehicle shadow.

Agnes Bell

Agnes Bell

There. That has to be it.

The Operative

The Operative

Keep moving, all of you. No stopping in the open.

Mallory glances back once, then turns and hurries on, his posture easing as the yard behind them disappears into white.

Sharp Archer reaches the extraction point and the team bunches under the lee of the crates, the storm hissing over their heads while the route behind them is lost.
