The Warehouse Standoff

Two weeks later, winter has buried the freight yard in hard drifts. Sharp Archer and Agnes Bell face a plain wooden warehouse, its shutter ticking in the wind like a warning.

The dossier page is lit at last, its route key and platform marks visible in the weak light. The marks point here, to a rail spur behind the warehouse and a siding that vanishes under snow.

Agnes Bell

Agnes Bell

This is it. The cargo never left the yard, it was hidden at the warehouse spur.

A muffled scrape carries from inside. Someone is already working the door from the other side, and fresh boot prints cut across the drift toward the loading bay.

Sharp Archer

Sharp Archer

We are not alone.

Agnes Bell

Agnes Bell

Then they found the route too. If they get the artifact first, we lose the only lead we have.

Sharp Archer shifts his rifle toward the warehouse as a shape moves behind the warped boards. The hunt has reached the hiding place, and the next minute decides who leaves with the dossier and the artifact.

✓ Quest Accepted

Secure the artifact before the intruders do

I let the old god's wishspers lead me to the artifact

SUCCESS (Legendary Arcane ballistics, rolled -1)

The Warehouse Standoff

Sharp Archer lets the whispering mark pull at his mind, and the snow-packed yard seems to tighten around the warehouse. The sound in the paper does not point at the door, it slides past it, toward the buried siding.

Sharp Archer

Sharp Archer

The trail runs under the drift.

He lowers his rifle and steps through the crusted snow, following the pressure of that ancient murmur along the wall. Agnes Bell stays back by the light, watching him go.

Agnes Bell

Agnes Bell

Sharp Archer? What did it show you?

At the warehouse corner, the snow gives way to a hidden hatch ring, half-buried and stiff with ice. Fresh scuffs mark it open from below, and a draft leaks up from darkness.

The whisper sharpens once, then falls silent, as if it has found the place it wanted.

Below the hatch, a narrow lamp glow moves across stacked crates, and a man below mutters to someone out of sight. The depot is real, and someone is already inside it.

I cast arcane eye to sneakily scout where everyone is inside and to see if I can see the artifact

SUCCESS (Legendary Arcane ballistics, rolled +0)

The Warehouse Standoff

Sharp Archer raises the arcane focus and lets the whisper in the dossier answer the dark below. A thin eye of sight slips through boards and crate gaps, quietly mapping the room under the warehouse.

Sharp Archer

Sharp Archer

Two men below. One lamp. The route opens into the depot.

Inside, the hidden chamber is cramped with stacked supplies, but one crate near the center has been split open and re-closed in haste. Faded stenciling marks it as special cargo, and a wax seal hangs broken at the latch.

A German officer crouches by the open crate, gloved hands sorting papers. Beside him, a second figure in a raincoat keeps watch at the ladder shaft, head turning toward the hatch above.

The artifact is there, wrapped in cloth and resting in the officer's reach, under a pad of straw and a field map. The whisper in the page tightens around it like a hook finding iron.

Agnes Bell

Agnes Bell

What is it? Tell me they have not already moved it.

Below, the raincoat man pauses, as if he has heard something shift overhead. The hatch above Archer and Agnes gives a small creak in the wind, and the men inside begin to look up.

I pull the pin on one of my grenades and magically alter it to a concussion grenade

SUCCESS (Legendary Arcane ballistics, rolled -1)

The Warehouse Standoff

Sharp Archer rolls the grenade in his palm and thumbs the pin free. He mouths the change through the arcane focus, and the casing settles into a duller, denser shape, meant to hit hard and drop sound, not flame.

Sharp Archer

Sharp Archer

Concussion. Better for a room full of papers.

Agnes Bell keeps still at the corner, eyes on the hatch, the dossier page clenched white in her hand. Below, the raincoat man shifts his stance, no longer watching the room so much as the ceiling above it.

Agnes Bell

Agnes Bell

That is not a smoke charge, is it?

The warehouse corner groans under the wind. Through the open hatch, the lamp below throws a hard yellow square over the crate, the wrapped bundle, and the man by the ladder shaft turning fully upward now.

Agnes Bell

Agnes Bell

If you are throwing, do it now. If not, we need another answer.

Concussion grenade

I throw it in there and cast a magical shield on myself and Agnes so we can engage the enemies immediately

SUCCESS (Legendary Arcane ballistics, rolled +0)

The Warehouse Standoff

Sharp Archer snaps the altered grenade downward into the hatch. A moment later, his shield flares over both him and Agnes Bell, thin as glass and tight around their shoulders.

Below, the concussion thumps the chamber hard. Lamp light jumps, papers skitter, and the raincoat man recoils from the ladder shaft with both hands raised to keep his balance.

Agnes Bell

Agnes Bell

That bought us a breath.

The open hatch now looks like a strike point instead of a blind corner. Dust drifts up through the shielded air, and the hidden room below goes loud with startled movement.

Agnes Bell

Agnes Bell

Now, Sharp Archer. While they are blinking.

Inside the chamber, the wrapped bundle lies still by the crate, and the German officer turns toward the ladder, caught between the blast and the opening above.

I immediately engage the enemies

SUCCESS (Superb Firearms, rolled -3)

The Warehouse Standoff

Sharp Archer fires into the chamber, and the first burst catches the German officer off balance. The man drops behind the crate, while the raincoat guard flinches backward, arms up, and the wrapped bundle stays exactly where it is.

The shot cracks through the warehouse floor, loud enough to shake dust from the beams. Agnes Bell jerks at the noise, but keeps her footing beside the hatch.

Agnes Bell

Agnes Bell

Keep them down. I can see the package.

Below, the chamber tips into chaos. Papers whirl in the lamp glow, and the raincoat man stumbles into the open, forced away from the ladder.

Sharp Archer

Sharp Archer

The hatch is clear enough to press.

Sharp Archer's rifle smoke hangs over the opening. The burst costs him a full clip and gives the intruders his exact position, but the bundle by the crate is no longer under their easy control.

The German officer pushes up from the floor and looks straight toward the ladder, realizing the fight has opened into a two-front scramble.

I reload and take out the officer with an arcane shot meant to stop in his body, and not pass through him.

SUCCESS (Legendary Arcane ballistics, rolled +1)

The Warehouse Standoff

Sharp Archer snaps a fresh clip into the Garand and fires again. The arcane round strikes the German officer center mass and stops him cold, folding him back against the crate before he can reach for the bundle.

The chamber goes suddenly still under the ringing report. Dust drifts through the lamp glow, and the wrapped package stays untouched beside the crate.

The German Officer

The German Officer

Not the crate... the weapon...

Agnes Bell leans farther over the hatch, eyes tracking the fallen officer and the package. Below, the raincoat man freezes at the ladder, caught between flight and the sudden silence.

The Raincoat Man

The Raincoat Man

Move, before he turns that on us!

The chamber has turned from a scramble into a checkmate, the officer pinned out of the fight and the hidden depot exposed for what it is.

I yell at the man "move and youre dead."

SUCCESS (Great Willpower, rolled -1)

The Warehouse Standoff
The Raincoat Man

The Raincoat Man

He lowers himself away from the ladder, hands open, breath ragged. All right. All right, do not shoot. I am done.

The chamber holds its breath. The wrapped bundle sits under the lamp, plainly real, while the dust keeps settling around the crate and the open hatch above.

Agnes Bell

Agnes Bell

You heard him, then. Stay still and tell us what this place is for.

The Raincoat Man

The Raincoat Man

A hiding place, at first. Then a handoff point. We were told the crate came from the rail office, and that anyone following the page would come hungry.

Agnes Bell

Agnes Bell

So the dossier was meant to lead here after all... but not for us alone.

The German officer lies unmoving by the crate, one gloved hand stretched uselessly toward the bundle, while the raincoat man keeps his distance from both the ladder and the weapon in Archer's hands.

The Raincoat Man

The Raincoat Man

If you want the thing, take it now. I am not dying for it.

I take the artifact and cast memory wipe on the man

SUCCESS (Legendary Arcane ballistics, rolled -3)

The Warehouse Standoff

Sharp Archer reaches down through the hatch and takes the wrapped artifact from beside the crate. The bundle is heavier than it looks, warm under the lamp, and the chamber seems to tighten around it as if the whole cache is counting breaths.

Sharp Archer

Sharp Archer

The package is real.

He keeps the Garand ready with one hand and turns the artifact toward the hatch while the raincoat man freezes below.

A narrow pulse of arcane force slips across the chamber, touches the man’s face, and pulls at the last few seconds of memory. His eyes blink hard, unfocused.

The Raincoat Man

The Raincoat Man

I... I was below the warehouse. Then there was smoke.

The words come out thin and unsure. He rubs his temple, staring past Sharp Archer as if the hatch were already empty.

Agnes Bell

Agnes Bell

Good. Then move. We have what we came for.

The chamber answers with a soft crack, one corner of the lamp glass splitting from the pressure of the spell. Dust drifts down over the crate, and the raincoat man sways, alive but uncertain what he has just lost.
