Inside the extraction car, Agnes Bell snaps a finger toward the faint ash glittering on Sharp Archer’s coat. The rattling light catches on every grain. The Operative and Mallory look over, tense and waiting.

Agnes Bell
That ash is not harmless. It is a mark, a beacon. Whatever you called down back there can find you by it.
The car lurches. Outside, shadowy shapes pace the rail line at speed, just beyond the frosted windows. Mallory’s face hardens as he studies the residue on Archer’s sleeve.

Agnes Bell
My orders were never only about the dossier. I was sent to make sure the artifact stayed contained, before it drew something worse to this train.

The Operative
Then the mission was built on a lie, or half a truth.

Mallory
So all this time, we have been hauling a lantern for monsters?
Agnes does not flinch. The glow on Archer’s coat fades and flares once, like a warning pulse, while the car shakes harder under the pressure of pursuit. Trust in the compartment shifts, thin as ice.

Explain magic powers while maintaining trust
“That's what the artifact is, but not my focus. It's true I draw my powers from a different source than other mages, but that's not a choice I made willingly. I'd rather not tell the story, but if im forced to, I will tell it.”
SUCCESS (Superb Willpower, rolled +0)

Sharp Archer
That is what the artifact is, but not my focus. My power comes from somewhere else, and it was never a choice I made willingly. I would rather not tell that story, but if I am forced to, I will.
The car rattles through the dark. Agnes lowers her hand from his sleeve, watching his face instead of the ash. The Operative and Mallory stay silent, listening for a lie that does not come.

Agnes Bell
That is more honest than a clever answer. Honest is a start.

Mallory
And the cost is already showing. He looks spent enough to prove it.
A hard jolt throws Archer against the wall, and a thin nosebleed spots his glove. The ash on his coat dims, then steadies, as if it has accepted the boundary he draws.

The Operative
Then we keep the explanation for when it matters, and we keep the team alive until then.

Agnes Bell
Agreed. If your magic answers to a different source, I want to know the rules, not your private ghosts. We can work with rules.

Explain magic powers while maintaining trust
“The rules... there really isnt any that matter for anyone but myself. One day I'll go mad, my mind chucked into the abyss where the old gods stay. I think its best i explained how this happened. I... I was on a mission with my team. It was to recover one of the artifacts. It was a trap though. We were ambushed by a nazi mage who drew upon his powers like me. What his deal to them was, I'll never know. He slaughtered my team and was about to kill me when I was offered a deal by the old gods. I could draw upon their powers and they'd bring back my team to life in exchange for my mind and soul when I am unable to fight anymore. I took the deal and killed the mage, but they brought my friends back as monsters... like the ones we just ran from.”
SUCCESS (Superb Willpower, rolled +2)

Sharp Archer
The rules... there really are no rules that matter for anyone but me. One day I will go mad, and the old gods will take what is left. This is how it starts.
The car bucks under them, steel groaning around the words. Agnes does not interrupt. Even Mallory stops looking for weakness and starts listening.

Sharp Archer
My team went after one of the artifacts. It was a trap. A Nazi mage hit us hard, like me, and I never found out what he owed them.
The ash on Archer's coat gives a dull, listening glow as he speaks, then settles again under the sway of the train.

Sharp Archer
He killed them. He was about to kill me when the old gods offered a deal. Their power for my mind and soul, when I can no longer fight.

Sharp Archer
I took it. I killed him. Then they brought my friends back wrong, as monsters.

Agnes Bell
Oh, God... no wonder he carries it like a wound.

The Operative
Then we do not let it decide the next move. We find a way to mask the beacon, or we bury the thing before it calls anything else.

Mallory
And if the ash is tied to the bargain, we treat it like explosive residue, not a curse. Same problem, different tools.

Agnes Bell
Tell me what it reacts to, exactly. If there are rules, even ugly ones, I can work with those.

Eliminate the minions of the old gods
“I hear the roars of the minions behind us. I see two of them, one of them an Armoured behemoth, the other a fast moving, floating, tentacles mass with a cone shaped head. I fire an explosive shot at the armored one to try to make it fumble.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Arcane ballistics, rolled -1)

A roar rolls up through the carriage floor, then a hard impact slams the coupler. Sharp Archer snaps the Garand up and fires through the window glare.
The explosive round punches the armored behemoth mid-stride. Its metal shell blossoms with a violent flash, and the thing lurches, one limb skidding wide.
The second shape, a floating knot of tentacles and a cone-shaped head, surges over the wrecked light outside, turning toward the car as if it has heard the shot.

The Operative
That one is off balance. Do not let it recover.

Mallory
Good. If it starts fumbling, I can work with that.

Agnes Bell
Sharp Archer, what does the other one do when it sees you?
Outside, the behemoth stumbles into the snowbank, and the floating thing hangs in the dark window line, drawing nearer while the train shudders under fresh blows.
“I tell the operative to use his machine gun to unload into the fleshy tentacles as I shoot another explosive round at the armoured one”
SUCCESS (Legendary Arcane ballistics, rolled +2)

Sharp Archer
Machine gun that thing. I’m taking the armored one.

The Operative
On it.
The Operative snaps a light machine gun up from the seat gap and rakes the window line. The floating shape jerks under the burst, tentacles whipping loose from the glass.
Sharp Archer shifts his aim past the shattered frost and sends another explosive round into the snowbanked behemoth. The blast blooms against its shell and drives it deeper into the drift.

Agnes Bell
That is the rhythm, keep them separated.

Mallory
Good, good, keep it pinned there.
Outside, the tentacled minion spasms in the muzzle flash and drops out of the window line, while the armored thing thrashes in the snow and stops climbing.

The Operative
Agnes, the next move. Do we run this signature cold, or do we hit harder?
“I keep the machine gun and explosive fire rolling. We should be able to kill them with a few more rounds of fire.”
SUCCESS (Superb Firearms, rolled +1)

Sharp Archer keeps the Garand barking, each shot hammering the white blur outside and forcing the shapes to stagger in the drift.
The armored thing lurches once, then buckles lower into the snowbank, its shell canted wrong and half-buried.
The tentacled minion convulses in the blast wash and disappears from the window line, driven off the train's side into the whiteness.

The Operative
That breaks their approach. Keep pressure on it.

Agnes Bell
Yes, hit the source, not the edges. If it cannot answer the call, the rest lose shape.

Mallory
Good. One more burst and I start believing this thing can bleed after all.
For a beat, the carriage fills with the crack of rifles and the hiss of torn frost, while outside the snowbanked behemoth stops climbing and the whiteout swallows the last moving trace.
“I start enchanting my next round with what little energy I have left. I shoot the armored target center mass, causing it to explode. I pass out as the last thing I see is the operative mowing down the tentacled monster”
SUCCESS (Legendary Arcane ballistics, rolled +3)

Sharp Archer drags the last of his strength into the next round, and the tip of the cartridge flares with a thin, cold glow before he chambers it.

Sharp Archer
The round is charged.
He fires center mass. The armored behemoth takes the hit and bursts open in the snowbank, shell plates and black vapor blown apart in one violent crack.
At the same instant, the operative sweeps the window line with disciplined fire, cutting down the tentacled shape as it lunges back into view.

The Operative
Target broken. Hold the line, Archer.

Agnes Bell
There, do you see it? The call is gone. The beacon just lost its answer.

Mallory
That is not bleeding, that is folding.
The whiteout swallows the battlefield. Where the minions were, there is only churned snow, shattered frost, and no movement left to answer the whispering mark.
