Arrival at the Bay of Bones

The cutter noses into a small Grizzly Bones port, all grey water, black stone, and timber walls dusted with frost. Bare-boned sheds squat along the quay, and the bears on the pier watch in quiet, weathered silence as sails slacken.

Captain Arnold Runner brings his ship in clean and slow, aiming for a berth near the fish sheds. The Quartermaster keeps the ledger tucked under one arm, while the Boatswain scans the dock with the patience of a man measuring ropes.

Onshore, The Harbor Master steps forward, heavy-furred and seawet, with a hard gaze and a coat that has seen too many winters. Beside him, The Dock Bear leans on a piling, pretending not to listen.

The Harbor Master lifts a chin toward the ship, then toward the tavern row. "If you are here to trade, trade. If you are here to gossip, do it in a warmer place."

This port looks slow enough to work quietly.

The crew begins unloading with practiced restraint, and Captain Arnold Runner turns the dock into a stage for casual talk. A pair of young deckhands nearby glance over at the ship, their ears twitching toward the promise of better coin.

One deckhand edges closer, while the other hangs back, watching the captain's crew and the glitter of pay with open hunger. The Harbor Master notices, but says nothing yet.

Recruit discontented sailors in Grizzly Bones

"Got some rich men looking to settle someplace discreet, and they'll pay for adventurous, capable sailors to replace them. I'll even throw in a payment to administrators and those willing to make the introductions."

SUCCESS (Legendary Communication: Command, rolled +1)

Arrival at the Bay of Bones

Captain Arnold Runner lets the offer land like a coin on a table. On the pier, the Harbor Master’s stern look shifts, not to trust, but to calculation. The First Deckhand straightens at once, and the Second Deckhand stops pretending not to listen.

The Harbor Master

The Harbor Master

So, discreet settling and honest payment for the right introductions. That is cleaner than most men bring to my docks.

The Boatswain keeps the gangplank clear while the Quartermaster tilts the ledger open, ready to record names if the wind turns fair. The Dock Bear’s ears angle toward the captain, curious now instead of idle.

The First Deckhand

The First Deckhand

You mean work that pays better than hauling fish and freezing for a master who forgets our names?

The Harbor Master

The Harbor Master

I mean I hear a captain offering opportunity, and I wonder if the Bay has been underpaying its boys for years.

Captain Arnold Runner’s pitch takes root. The Harbor Master gives a short, deciding nod toward the tavern row, then toward the officials’ office beside the quay.

You may scout the taverns for sailors with restless feet. Speak plainly, keep the peace, and leave a fair fee for any clerk who smooths the way.

The First Deckhand half-turns toward the warmth of the taverns, already imagining better coin, while the Second Deckhand watches the captain with a hungry, measuring stare.

"There's a handsome sign on bonus. After that, it's a fair share of the haul. Interested?"

There is a handsome sign-on bonus. After that, it is a fair share of the haul. Interested?

The offer hangs in the salt air. The First Deckhand’s ears perk, and the Second Deckhand’s stare sharpens into something like calculation. The Harbor Master’s mouth quirks, not quite a smile, but close enough for the Bay of Bones.

The First Deckhand

The First Deckhand

A sign-on bonus... and a share? That beats bone-cold decks and a master who pays in promises.

The Harbor Master

The Harbor Master

Then hear it plainly, boys. This captain speaks like a man who expects to keep his word.

The Quartermaster’s quill scratches once across the ledger, then stops, waiting for a name. The Boatswain shifts aside from the gangplank, opening the way with a grudgingly polite sweep of his hand.

The Second Deckhand

The Second Deckhand

If the share is real, I will hear the terms. I am tired of hauling for men who forget our faces.

The Harbor Master looks from the deckhands to Captain Arnold Runner, measuring the mood and finding it pliable. The dockside chill, the black timber quays, and the tavern row all seem to lean toward the same answer.

The Harbor Master

The Harbor Master

Take your scout, Captain. If you find men with enough nerve to leave Grizzly Bones, I will not stand in your way.

Arnold shows them the contract, including the shares owed to the rank of 'deckhand.' He places the gold set aside for their sign on bonus next to the contract. "Quartermaster, if these two sign on, release those two exhausted deckhands and wish them well from me."

SUCCESS (Legendary Communication: Command, rolled +1)

Arrival at the Bay of Bones

Captain Arnold Runner lays the contract flat against the black timber post and sets the gold beside it, bright against the frost. The deckhands’ eyes drop to the shares first, then to the bonus, as if the coins speak louder than any pitch.

Quartermaster, if these two sign on, release those two exhausted deckhands and wish them well from me.

The Quartermaster gives a short nod and makes room at the ledger. The Boatswain steps back from the gangplank, already turning the path clear for men who choose a better berth.

The First Deckhand

The First Deckhand

That is a proper offer. A real one.

The Second Deckhand

The Second Deckhand

I will put my mark to that, if the shares stay as written.

The Harbor Master watches the two men, then Arnold, and does not interfere. The Bay of Bones keeps its chill, but the dockside has gone still enough to hear the quill begin.

One of the tired deckhands is already being waved free by the Boatswain, while the other straightens with fresh hope. The contract and coin sit open between them, waiting for the first signature.
