The two ships grind side by side in the swell, planks twitching inches apart. Captain Arnold Runner stands at the rail with the signed contract in view, while the Hurter cutter keeps station like a patient hound on a short leash.

Trade terms, then. Make them brief. We are not here to admire your carpentry.

Captain Arnold Runner

Captain Arnold Runner

Trade terms, aye. Keep your cutter close, and I will keep my deck cooperative.

Below him, the Quartermaster and the Boatswain shove the marked coins and a few last crew across the gap while the merchant sailors scramble to keep their footing. Mercer Halden, stripped of his trim, watches from near the chart table with a jaw like a locked hatch.

This is what my command has come to, a bargaining chip in bad weather.

A fresh movement catches the eye, a smartly dressed Hurter captain stepping to the cutter’s rail to oversee the exchange.

Captain Mister

Captain Mister

You have the look of a man who understands ledgers. I prefer that to cannon smoke. What exactly are you offering, Captain Runner?

Captain Arnold Runner

Captain Arnold Runner

Safe passage for your scout’s report, and no fuss while my crew finishes boarding. In return, you leave with a clean account and the shape of a profitable story.

The Hurter Scout

Reasonable. Annoyingly so. Keep the transfer moving, and I may decide this was a proper trade after all.

The last crewman clears the gap, the cutter eases a fraction back, and the merchant deck falls into a tense, expectant hush. Captain Mister’s gaze fixes on Arnold, waiting for the final word before the ships separate.

Keep the Hurter cutter from reopening hostilities

Convince Mister to command the ship

"Quartermaster, bring all trustworthy recruits on board our ship and replace them with our most promotable crew. Then bring that merchant sailor we parlayed with, calls himself Mister. I want to talk with him."

SUCCESS (Good Communication: Command, rolled +1)

The Final Trade Parley

The order lands cleanly. The Quartermaster snaps to work, waving the most proven hands toward the merchant ship’s rail while two hardier newcomers are pointed back to the Wild Ones’ side. The deck shifts with the change, less a crowd than a sorting table.

The Boatswain takes the merchant sailor by the shoulder and steers him across the boards without ceremony. He crosses with quick, careful steps, eyes fixed ahead, as if he knows exactly which way the sea is tilting.

A tidy rearrangement. Efficient men waste no time pretending otherwise.

Mister stops at Arnold’s side, having the easy balance of a man used to decks and ledgers both. Behind him, the Hurter cutter gives a final shove of distance, its rail already slipping farther off.

Captain Arnold Runner

Bring him here.

The Boatswain delivers the merchant sailor to Arnold’s reach, then peels away to cover the transfers. Halden watches the exchange with a pinched, unreadable stare, his old authority now little more than a discarded coat.

A Merchant Sailor

You called, Captain. I am here, and I would rather speak than shout across planks.

The sailor stands waiting, and Mister’s attention stays on Arnold, measuring him in silence while the two ships drift farther apart.

Arnold smiles. "You have a heart for your crew and a head for intrigue. You'll make a fine captain." A look of pain crosses Arnold's face as he leans in for a whisper "Guts for punishment take time, don't hesitate to delegate that to my crew members if anyone gives you trouble. They have your back." He grabs Halden's uniform, and places it on Mister "I dub the Captain Mister II, you've earned it, sail well with me."

SUCCESS (Good Communication: Command, rolled +3)

Arnold’s smile turns the deck warm for a heartbeat as he reaches for the merchant sailor, then eases Halden’s discarded coat onto the man’s shoulders like a flag of office.

The new captain straightens under the weight of it, stunned into silence. Halden’s mouth tightens, but he says nothing as the title passes beyond him.

Then I will wear it properly. A ship keeps steadier when every hand knows the name above them.

The cutter drifts wider off the right side, its rail shrinking in the swell. On the merchant deck, the contract, the coin sacks, and the stripped trim sit together like proof of a transfer already accepted.
