Lantern light swells over the hold, turning wet planks to brass. The Quartermaster braces a paw on the coin sack, eager and waiting. The Boatswain has the merchant sailors bound fast, and the whole ship groans like it resents being robbed.

The Quartermaster

The Quartermaster

Orders, Captain? We can ferry the coin at once, before the sea gets any notions of its own.

Captain Arnold Runner

Captain Arnold Runner

Get the lot aboard. No delays.

At the command, the crew moves. Rope bites into the sack, boots scrape, and the first prize begins its journey toward your ship. One merchant sailor raises his head, sees the weight leaving him, and goes very still.

A Merchant Sailor

A Merchant Sailor

They mean to strip us clean.

The Boatswain

The Boatswain

A fine haul, Captain. With this and the cargo above, we make a respectable legend of the evening.

The merchantman lurches hard to starboard. From somewhere above, a crack of timber answers the roll. The prize is secure, but the sea is not finished testing your claim.

The captain approaches the sailor that parlayed with him above decks. "Take me to the captain."

SUCCESS (Great Intrigue, rolled +0)

Securing the Prize

Captain Arnold Runner leaves the coin line and crosses to the bound sailor with a predator's calm. The merchantman gives a slow, bruised groan underfoot, but the deck holds.

Captain Arnold Runner

Captain Arnold Runner

Take me to your captain.

A Merchant Sailor

A Merchant Sailor

You mean to parley after robbing us? ...Aye. Better that than leave him guessing.

The sailor nods once, then jerks his chin toward the companionway. His fear eases into something tighter, practical, as if he has found the shape of surviving this.

The Quartermaster

The Quartermaster

He'll lead us true, Captain. The man knows where the purse and the pride are kept.

A Merchant Sailor

A Merchant Sailor

If their captain has any sense, he will listen before this gets uglier.

Captain Arnold Runner gets the route at once. The sailor rises enough to shuffle forward, bound hands awkward at his back, and starts toward the upper passage with a wary glance over his shoulder.

A Merchant Sailor

A Merchant Sailor

This way, then. And if he offers terms, will you hear them?

"Rob?!" Captain Runner mocks offense, "We don't rob, we release overburdened ships of their excess booty, all of it. Thereby, we save the sailors from harsh seas." He pulls out a contract in one hand, a rubber chicken in another. "Your captain does have a meaningful choice to make" He squeezes the rubber chicken menacingly. Once they arrive at the captain, he analyzes whether this is believably, in fact, the captain.

SUCCESS (Great Intrigue, rolled +2)

The sailor leads the way, but Captain Arnold Runner slows him with a flick of paper and a squeeze of the rubber chicken. The little squeak cuts through the creak of the roll.

Captain Arnold Runner

Captain Arnold Runner

Rob? We do not rob. We release overburdened ships of their excess booty. All of it.

The merchant sailor blinks, then gives a tight, reluctant snort despite himself. The humor sits badly on him, but it sits.

A Merchant Sailor

A Merchant Sailor

A legal theft, then. ...You pirates do love a tidy lie.

Captain Arnold Runner studies him, then the way he squares his shoulders. That is not the captain's posture. The man is only crew, useful but not the voice below.

A Merchant Sailor

A Merchant Sailor

If you want the captain, he is above with the purser and the charts. He hates being kept waiting.

The sailor glances at the contract in one hand, the chicken in the other, and swallows another laugh.

A Merchant Sailor

A Merchant Sailor

If you truly mean terms, then let him hear them in one piece. Shall I bring you to him, Captain?

"Please do, mister ___ ?"

Captain Arnold Runner

Please do, mister...?

A Merchant Sailor

A Merchant Sailor

He huffs a laugh and bows his head a fraction. "Mister will do. Follow me, then. The captain likes a witness who can count."

He turns his bound wrists just enough to angle his shoulder toward the passage. The deck gives another slow, sour groan under the roll.

A Merchant Sailor

A Merchant Sailor

You seem the sort who hears numbers before lies. That may be useful.

The sailor lowers his voice as he starts up the steps, half as if sharing a secret, half as if keeping the crew's pride intact.

A Merchant Sailor

A Merchant Sailor

If your captain wants cargo cleanly handed over, then ours will want to know what you plan to leave behind. He is above with the charts, yes, and one ledger that matters more to him than his temper.

He glances back once, not frightened now, merely measuring Captain Arnold Runner like a man measuring a cut of cloth. The way ahead is open, and the next word belongs to him.

He turns to the other captain "You are the captain of this ship?"

SUCCESS (Good Communication: Command, rolled -2)

Securing the Prize

Captain Arnold Runner turns from the steps and fixes the merchant captain with a level stare. The cargo below keeps shifting in its slings while the ship leans hard to starboard.

Captain Arnold Runner

Captain Arnold Runner

You are the captain of this ship?

Mercer Halden

Mercer Halden

Aye, and speaking with the cargo ledger in hand, which is more authority than I have left in these soaked planks.

Mercer Halden

Mercer Halden

He squares his shoulders anyway, trying for dignity over the grumble of the deck.

Mercer Halden

Mercer Halden

Name's Mercer Halden. I am captain until the last bolt, the last barrel, and the last bargain are counted.

From farther down the hold, the Quartermaster gives a pleased snort and keeps the coin sack moving with the others.

Mercer Halden

Mercer Halden

If you mean to leave me a ship worth sailing, Captain Runner, then speak plain. What do you ask for the hold, and what do you keep for your trouble?

He adds Captain Halden's name to the contract. "Here's the short version of the contract, 'I, Captain Mercer Halden, herby consent to having my booty taken in its entirety by Captain Arnold Runner and his seamen, to hold and do with as they see fit. I understand that this is payment for saving my ship from irresponsible overburdening and waive any further rights to these goods, gold...' and so on and so forth." His face turns more serious. "It would be unfortunate, Captain if your ship were to be set upon by actual pirates. They tend to be far less interested in your welfare."

FAILURE (Great Intrigue, rolled -4)

Securing the Prize

Captain Arnold Runner adds Mercer Halden's name to the contract with a neat stroke, then pushes the page forward across the heaving chart table.

Captain Arnold Runner

Captain Arnold Runner

Here's the short version. You sign, and this cargo changes hands.

Halden reads, one ear flattening as he reaches the ugly line about booty and total surrender. The deck tilts beneath him, but his grip stays steady.

Mercer Halden

Mercer Halden

That is not a contract, that is a threat wearing ink.

Mercer Halden

Mercer Halden

He is trying for fear, but the hand is too clean. I know the shape of a bluff when I see one.

The merchant captain taps the page once, then twice, as if weighing the cost of pride against the cost of resistance.

Mercer Halden

Mercer Halden

If pirates truly wanted my welfare, they would have brought less poetry and more honesty. Still, I will not sign under a cudgel's shadow.

A Merchant Sailor

A Merchant Sailor

Captain, if there is a fair price in this, say it plain. Some of us would rather keep the ship whole than keep our honor bruised.

Arnold snaps his paws, a signal for the Quartermaster and a burly seaman to accost him by the shoulders.

FAILURE (Great Intrigue, rolled -4)

Securing the Prize

Arnold snaps his paws. The signal goes out clean, but the deck’s roll steals the timing.

The Quartermaster and a burly seaman start in, then both hesitate as Halden shifts his weight and twists away from their reach.

Mercer Halden

Mercer Halden

No, Captain. If you mean to lay hands on me, you should have done it before the bargain became interesting.

A Merchant Sailor

A Merchant Sailor

He is not wrong. Say the price, or say you mean to take everything, and let the rest of us hear it plain.

The failed grab leaves Halden free and half-amused, while the others’ attention tightens on Arnold instead of the contract.

Mercer Halden

Mercer Halden

Tell me, Captain Runner, do you want my signature, or my respect? Those are not always purchased with the same coin.

The chart table shudders between them, lanternlight sliding over the open page as the ship groans onward.

Captain pulls his sword and attempts to swiftly lop off either a leg or his dominant arm to prevent reprisal.

SUCCESS (Good Fencing, rolled +1)

Securing the Prize

Arnold’s cutlass flashes out before Halden can answer. Steel bites clean through the merchant captain’s weapon arm, and the ledger drops with a slap to the planks.

Mercer Halden

Mercer Halden

Enough, then. I yield the argument, Captain Runner.

Halden staggers back, clutching the ruined sleeve to his side, jaw locked hard against the pain.

A Merchant Sailor

A Merchant Sailor

Saints preserve us, he’s done it. Captain, the cargo can go. Just keep the blood off the papers.

The chart table skids a handspan under the ship’s roll, and the contract lies open where both men can see it.

Captain Arnold Runner

Captain Arnold Runner

The captain is beaten, and he still has the table.

Mercer Halden

Mercer Halden

Sign the terms, then. Tell me what price you mean to take for what is already lost.

"You're a stubborn one, Halden. Too stubborn. Sign the papers, and leave the ship immediately." For the first time, a kind look crosses his face. "As for you, Mister, I like you. Would you like to join our crew, or accept a promotion to captain on this one?"

SUCCESS (Great Intrigue, rolled -1)

Securing the Prize

The ship groans underfoot, but the upper deck holds its breath. Arnold eases the pressure in his stance, letting the cutlass tip drift down as Halden stares at the contract.

Captain Arnold Runner

Captain Arnold Runner

Sign it. Leave the ship. Now.

Mercer Halden

Mercer Halden

A man can lose an arm and still keep his name, Captain Runner. You have the cargo, but I will not pretend that makes you civil.

Halden takes the paper with his good hand. He reads once, then writes with a stiff, furious care that looks more like pride than surrender.

A Merchant Sailor

A Merchant Sailor

He means it, then. Well... if the old man is quitting, someone has to keep the hull in one piece.

Captain Arnold Runner

Captain Arnold Runner

You there. Join my crew, or take command of this tub under my flag.

A Merchant Sailor

A Merchant Sailor

Captain? Me? I know the ropes, the stores, and every lie Halden ever tells himself. If you want a steady hand, I can be that.

Halden barks a short, pained laugh, then presses his thumb beside the signature. The sailor draws himself up, half proud and half stunned, waiting on Arnold's answer.
