Before dawn fully breaks, a pale flame blooms beneath the cheese vats. It consumes neither wood, cloth, nor milk, yet its cold radiance fills the cheesehouse.

Back from the vats. Claire, keep clear of it. Kokoro, stay where I can see you.

Jeth steps between the strange fire and the family’s work, broad shoulders tense. Rain ticks against the shutters while the flame slips into a spill of whey.

It is not burning the whey. It is writing through it. I have never seen heat behave like this.

The pale fire crawls in branching strokes, forming unfamiliar script across the floor. Its final mark opens like an empty flame, unlike Kokoro’s walnut leaf or the shrine’s sealed writing.

This points toward someone who once refused to claim the spring. Not a guardian, not an heir, and not a master.

The mark turns westward, and the impossible heat gathers beneath it. Jeth holds his ground while Claire studies the shifting letters, leaving the next answer before Kokoro.

✓ Quest Accepted

Kokoro bows toward the western guardian’s absent flame, then kneels beside the whey-script. She follows each branching stroke with her gaze, comparing its shapes to the old covenant marks.

The pale fire tightens beneath her attention. Its empty-flame sign unfolds into a name written in archaic letters: Vael Tern, the Unclaiming Hand.

Kokoro

Kokoro

Vael Tern refused the spring, and the fire remembers where that choice was made.

A second line forms beneath the name: First wanderer beneath the western path, keeper of the unheld flame, departed toward the rain gate.

The script then flares white and draws a narrow map through the whey, marking a concealed entrance west of the cavern spring. Cold bites through Kokoro’s fingertips, leaving them numb.

Vael Tern. That is a person, not a title. The rain gate must be an older entrance, hidden beyond the spring.

Then we leave the vats untouched and tell the elder. No one follows this trail alone, not even a fire that knows your name.
