The amber stair ends before a round stone threshold. Three separate channels cross its face: flame, open palm, and closed door, each descending into different darkness.
Vael arrives behind Kokoro and stops at the chamber’s edge. Claire remains far above at the rain gate, preserving the archive’s signs while the last passage waits below.

Vael Tern
This is the final threshold. It will not ask you to carry another fire, offer it a shape, or choose its destination.
The three paths brighten without merging. At their center, a small unlit hollow reflects Kokoro’s own ember, steady and wholly apart from every dormant channel.

Vael Tern
Your fire has no inherited keeper now. The threshold can show its future, but only you can decide whether to learn what it becomes.
A line of amber script appears beneath the hollow: “Unbound fire may remain, depart, or kindle anew. Witnessing is not possession.” The stone waits for Kokoro’s answer.
“I step toward the unlit hollow”

Kokoro steps toward the unlit hollow. The three channels remain separate as she crosses the threshold’s face, and the amber floor receives each measured footfall without resistance.
Vael watches from the chamber’s edge, making no move to guide her. The threshold’s small hollow grows clearer with every step, reflecting the quiet ember within her.

Kokoro
The hollow reflects my fire without drawing it nearer.
When Kokoro reaches the center, the stone opens like a flower of pale amber. No force takes her ember; instead, the threshold reveals three distant horizons within its depths.
One horizon holds a steady hearth, another opens into deep darkness, and the third glimmers with countless small sparks. Each remains beyond her command, waiting only to be witnessed.

Vael Tern
Then your journey is complete. You have learned what your fire may become, and you have left its becoming in its own hands.
The threshold closes gently, preserving no choice for itself. Kokoro’s ember burns with its own quiet warmth as the way upward opens behind her, and the deep chamber settles into peace.

The threshold sealed with a soft stone sigh, leaving the ember warm and wholly her own.

Vael Tern
No keeper. No claim. Go where your fire chooses.

Kokoro
Then I will choose, when the choosing comes.
Above, rain silvered the open way, and Claire waited beyond it.
Kokoro climbed from the chamber carrying no command, only the quiet knowledge that her fire belonged to no one. It might become a hearth, vanish into darkness, or scatter into countless sparks, and each future was hers to welcome. Behind her, the ancient threshold slept; ahead, the rain-washed world opened without demand.
