Kokoro bows toward the western guardian’s absent flame on the ledge above the spring. Vael stands behind her, while Claire remains far above at the rain gate, copying the signs.
Below, separate flames gather in amber, blue-white, and pale violet circles around the crystal spring. The red flame-shaped reflection trembles across the water without entering it.

Vael Tern
The spring has received the memory of becoming many. It does not yet open. Perhaps it waits for the memories you have not followed.
Amber fragments drift upward from the ledge and divide above the spring, each revealing a different reflection: a hand releasing fire, a flame remaining alone, a path vanishing into stone.

Vael Tern
The routes below are not invitations in the manner of roads. They are recollections. To enter one is to let it show what it preserves.
The crystal surface brightens beneath the red mark. Three ripples spread outward, stopping at the separate flame circles as though awaiting a witness rather than a command.

Vael Tern
I will remain beside you, but the spring must hear your attention for itself.
Director's note
I walk into where the red mark is.

Kokoro bows toward the western guardian’s absent flame. Her small ember stays warm in her hand as the spring’s three ripples widen beneath the red reflection.
She steps from the ledge and walks into the red mark’s reflected center. Crystal light rises around her boots without resistance, while amber, blue-white, and pale violet fires hold their separate circles.

Vael Tern
Do not seek to command the mark. Let it show whether it remembers a place, a choice, or the space between them.
The reflection passes through Kokoro like clear water. For an instant, the spring reveals three routes beneath her: one multiplying, one standing alone, and one vanishing beyond reach.
The red shape settles over her shadow, not upon her skin. The crystal water opens below, revealing a stair of light descending into a darkness untouched by any flame.

Vael Tern
There. The mark remembers the witness, not the owner. It has opened because you entered without asking any fire to become yours.
Behind Kokoro, the three circles remain distinct. Ahead, the light-stair descends beneath the spring, carrying the red mark toward a deeper chamber where no memory yet burns.
“I descend the light-stair beneath the spring”
SUCCESS (Superb Agility, rolled -1)

Kokoro bows toward the western guardian’s absent flame, then places her foot upon the descending stair. Red light gathers beneath each step and bears her downward.
The spring’s surface closes overhead without a splash. Amber, blue-white, and pale violet fires vanish behind crystal as the stair carries Kokoro into untouched darkness.

Vael Tern
Keep your ember covered. The deeper fire may recognize its warmth before it recognizes you.
Kokoro descends in silence. Cold climbs through her boots and stiffens the hand holding her ember; its warmth gutters, leaving her fingers painfully numb.
The light-stair ends in a circular chamber beneath the spring. Black crystal walls hold no flame, while a red mark glows across the floor like a sealed eye.

Vael Tern
You are below the memories now. This place has not chosen a shape for what it remembers.
The final step dissolves behind Kokoro, and the chamber settles into stillness. Her ember remains alive despite its weakened warmth, while the red mark waits before her.

Director's note
I kneel beside the red mark and place my hand atop it.

Kokoro bows toward the western guardian’s absent flame. The gesture passes through the black crystal chamber, and the red mark continues glowing across the floor.
She walks into the mark’s center. Its crimson radiance rises around her boots, outlining the sealed eye without touching her robe or the small ember in her hand.
Vael remains near the chamber’s edge, silent beneath the red light. Above him, the last trace of the vanished stair fades from the ceiling.
Kokoro kneels beside the mark and places her hand atop it. The crystal floor is cold, but the symbol answers with a slow pulse beneath her palm.

Vael Tern
It remembers contact now. Not ownership. Not command. Something older than either is deciding whether to open.
Red lines spread beneath Kokoro’s fingers, forming branching paths through the black crystal. Each route holds a different glow: amber, blue-white, or pale violet.
The chamber’s darkness gathers around those paths without extinguishing them. Beneath Kokoro’s hand, a hidden warmth begins to rise, waiting for the mark to reveal its memory.
Director's note
While remaining kneeling I speak to the mark.
“I am also a separate fire. I would join my memories in as well.”
FAILURE (Great Magic, rolled -2)

Kokoro remains kneeling with her hand atop the red mark. She opens her ember to the memories it carries, offering the branching, separate paths without command or claim.
Amber, blue-white, and pale violet light rise through her palm. For one breath, the three memories gather around her own fire, each retaining its distinct shape.
Then the mark contracts. The offered memories recoil into the crystal, and Kokoro’s ember is pulled toward the sealed eye instead, its warmth thinning to a faint red spark.

Vael Tern
You are separate, yes. But offering your memories as one joining makes the mark treat you as another gathering point.
A narrow ring of crimson crystal rises around Kokoro’s hand, holding it against the mark without pain. The three routes vanish, leaving only a fourth path beneath her palm.

Vael Tern
It has refused the joining and preserved the refusal. Your memories are not lost, but they will not enter as a single tale.
The ring hardens into a small open circle, while the red spark in Kokoro’s ember steadies. The mark now waits for one memory at a time.
“I offer one memory to the seal”
SUCCESS (Great Magic, rolled -3)

Kokoro remains kneeling beside the red mark, hand pressed to its open circle. She offers one memory without joining it to any other.
The seal draws the memory through her palm. Crimson light unfolds across the black crystal, preserving its shape while the surrounding darkness falls completely still.

Vael Tern
One memory heard. It does not ask what the others remember.
The open circle closes around the offered recollection, and a clear image forms within it before Kokoro: a single choice held apart from every other path.
The cost arrives as the red spark in Kokoro’s ember gutters nearly dark. Cold spreads from her palm into her wrist, leaving the hand numb around its fading warmth.

Vael Tern
It accepted the memory, but took warmth to keep it separate. The seal now knows one truth by itself.
The preserved image settles beneath the crystal floor. The red mark opens into a narrow passage, revealing a dim stair descending farther below.
