Before sunrise, Claire leads Kokoro from the rain-dark lane to the shrine. Jeth remains at the cheesehouse with the vats, while Sella Venn, the village elder, waits beside the sealed rings.
Sella is an elderly woman with a spare frame, silver hair braided against her neck, and layered gray-green robes fastened by a weathered copper clasp. Her steady gaze rests on the hardened blue script.
Kokoro bows toward the western guardian’s absent flame before entering the outer chamber. The air smells of wet stone, and the seal gleams across the threshold like frozen water.

The layers reacted once to your touch. Bring your elemental awareness near it, but do not force the seal open.
As Kokoro’s awareness nears the script, blue lines peel apart without breaking. Beneath the outer symbols, older words emerge in staggered bands.
The innermost layer reads: The keeper must not speak the name of the first refusal. A final line forms beneath it, pointing west: Vael Tern passed beyond the rain gate.
