Amber light flows through the honey-colored chamber as Kokoro stands before the empty circular dais. Behind her, the offered ember remains far above, separate within the hearth.
Vael Tern accompanies her at the chamber’s threshold, his weathered figure framed by the descending stair. Claire remains far above at the rain gate, copying the signs.

Vael Tern
The hearth has named three endings for released fire. Carry, Offer, and Leave. The center asks what you understand between them.
The three concentric bands brighten in turn. Flame-shaped sigils kindle around the outer ring, open hands gleam across the middle, and the unmarked center stays dark.

Vael Tern
I cannot answer for you. I once mistook refusal for wisdom, and the fire preserved that mistake as faithfully as any truth.

Kokoro
The center remains unmarked.
A narrow seam circles the blank stone. Beneath it, fresh script gathers in amber lines, waiting for Kokoro’s attention while the chamber holds perfectly still.
“I study the fresh script beneath the seam”
SUCCESS (Legendary Lore, rolled -2)

Kokoro kneels beside the dais and studies the fresh script beneath the seam. Amber letters settle into three lines, their shapes older than the surrounding bands.
She traces the first line with her eyes: “Carry preserves direction, but binds the bearer to every change.” The second reads, “Offer releases direction, but leaves consequence behind.”
The final line clarifies Leave: it is neither abandonment nor surrender, but allowing power to depart without assigning it a destination. The center records the witness’s understanding.

Vael Tern
Then the choices are not endings. They are responsibilities. Each keeps something, gives something, and leaves something beyond your reach.
A fourth inscription appears beneath the others: “Name what cannot be preserved.” Kokoro understands the cost of the study as the script’s grammar shifts beyond any known tongue.
The knowledge is complete, but the final sentence resists translation. Hours may be required to recover its meaning, while the three bands wait in quiet agreement.
Director's note
Kokoro sits down on the stone floor where she can read the inscription and places her staff across her lap
“It will require some time to understand what the fourth inscription reads. It has been some time and I could use the rest. I’ll take the time now as I ponder this.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Lore, rolled -1)

Kokoro sits on the honey-colored stone where the fourth inscription lies within easy sight, placing her staff across her lap. The chamber remains quiet around her.
Time passes in the steady amber glow. She reads the strange grammar repeatedly, comparing its turns of phrase with the three named responsibilities and the empty center.

Vael Tern
Rest, then. Understanding need not be seized quickly. Some truths reveal their shape only after the mind stops forcing them.
Kokoro lets her attention settle on the final command: name what cannot be preserved. At last, the shifting symbols align with the earlier account of released power.

Kokoro
Direction, consequence, and destination cannot all remain with the one who witnesses release.
The fourth inscription clarifies beneath her gaze: no witness can preserve another being’s will, outcome, or chosen path. To understand freedom is to accept what understanding cannot retain.

Vael Tern
You have found its meaning. The witness may remember the choice, but cannot keep the choosing for themselves.
