The Wanderer and the Vault

The mountain air grows brittle, turning to jagged shards of ice as F stalks the frozen path. Beside the discarded, glowing geode staff, a rugged wanderer named Torin stands with his hand resting on a heavy iron axe. He watches the frost creep toward his boots, his eyes scanning F with a mix of wariness and sharp professional curiosity.

Torin

Torin

: You leave a cold trail, traveler. That staff belonged to a woman who knew the path to the Sunken Vault. Since you clearly disposed of her, you might be the only one capable of retrieving the Ember Heart hidden inside.

F

F

The hunger still hums beneath my skin, but this stranger smells of coin and opportunity rather than fear.

F

F

: Why should I help you reach a vault, Torin?

Torin

Torin

: Because the Heart heals what is broken, and judging by the way the earth shudders when you walk, you are far beyond mending. Bring me the relic, and I will ensure the mountain scouts forget they ever saw your face.

Retrieve the Ember Heart from the Sunken Vault

I take the staff adding it to my inventory and add him to my party by reciting him

SUCCESS (Legendary Intimidation, rolled +1)

The Wanderer and the Vault

F moves with a blur of unnatural speed, muscles coiled like a striking viper. Before Torin can fully process the movement, F is already stooping, fingers closing around the cold, crystalline surface of the geode staff. The frost surrounding them intensifies, deepening into a jagged rime that crawls up Torin's leather boots and locks them to the mountain slope.

F

F

: Your logic is sound, mercenary. You will walk in my shadow, you will keep your steel sheathed, and you will ensure my anonymity. Do we have an accord?

Torin

Torin

:

Torin

Torin

This creature is not merely a bounty. It is a calamity wrapped in fur.

Torin

Torin

: The path is yours to command. Just keep that cold away from my heart.

F

F

The staff pulses with a rhythmic, dying light. It feels heavy, a fragment of the sun trapped in glass, waiting to be consumed or commanded.

Escort Torin down the mountain to the hidden trailhead

I turn around and go down the mountain, helping Torin, for now

SUCCESS (Legendary Agility, rolled -1)

The Wanderer and the Vault

F pivots with effortless grace, the purple folds of the cloak swirling around their muscular frame. The mountain slope, slick with treacherous ice, bows to F's uncanny footing. With a single, fluid motion, F extends a clawed hand toward Torin, pulling him from the frost-locked patch of stone.

F

F

: Keep close. My stride will not break for the cold, and I suggest yours matches it.

Torin

Torin

This creature moves like a living shadow. If they intend to betray me, I will never see the blade that finishes it.

Torin

Torin

: Lead on. I have little desire to be left behind as a statue for the mountain winds.

F

F

The descent is steep, but the path forward is clearer than it has been in days. The Ember Heart calls from the depths, and for the first time, I feel as though the weight of my past might be outpaced by the speed of my resolve.

I keep forward making sure torin isn't getting left in the snow

SUCCESS (Legendary Agility, rolled -1)

The Wanderer and the Vault

F moves with lethal poise, cutting a path through the blinding white spindrift. Each step is perfectly placed, their blackened, clawed hands carving through the air to steady their momentum. When the gale intensifies, threatening to swallow the trail, F pauses momentarily, reaching back to ensure Torin is still following close behind.

F

F

The cold is a dull ache, nothing more. If this wanderer falls behind, the mountain will claim him before the vault ever reveals its secrets.

Torin

Torin

My lungs burn, but I am here. Keep this pace, and we shall reach the ridge before the blizzard seals the pass entirely.

Torin

Torin

That demon-kin does not even shiver. They navigate this frozen hell as if they were born from the ice itself. I must ensure I am more useful to them than the snow.

A sudden, jagged crack echoes through the mountain side, and the earth beneath them shifts, sending a cascade of shale and frost tumbling into the abyss below.

I'd avoid the hole and make sure Torin doesn't make any mistakes, dragging him along with me like I'm dragging the staff

SUCCESS (Legendary Agility, rolled +2)

The Wanderer and the Vault

F lunges, their lithe body becoming a blur of orange and black against the whiteout. Before the ground can give way beneath the human, F’s clawed hand finds the back of his heavy woolen tunic. With a rhythmic, powerful heave, they yank Torin across the widening gap.

Torin

Torin

Whoa. You moved faster than the eye can follow.

F

F

Survival is about more than just speed. It is about anticipating the mountain's next bite.

F does not break stride, dragging the stumbling wanderer behind them with one hand while the geode staff remains gripped firmly in the other. As they clear the fissure, a massive slab of rock slides into the void, sending a plume of frozen dust erupting into the air.

Torin

Torin

I am alive. I owe this demon-kin my life twice over now.

The ground vibrates beneath their boots, suggesting the shelf they stand upon is far from stable. F must decide whether to seek shelter in a nearby wind-carved grotto or push harder to outrun the shifting cliffside.

For the sake of the human I look for shelter "you're not surviving this storm"

FAILURE (Terrible Health, rolled -1)

The Wanderer and the Vault

F turns, gesturing toward a jagged, wind-carved grotto nearby. Before they can speak, the mountain shelf groans. The stability they relied upon vanishes. A massive chunk of the ledge buckles, pitching forward instead of under.

F

F

Move. You are not surviving this storm out here.

F attempts to vault toward the grotto, but their footing fails on the slick, frost-slicked rock. Their heavy, clawed boots slide wide. Instead of reaching safety, F slams hard against the cliff face, the impact rattling their very bones. The geode staff slips from their blackened fingers, skittering across the uneven ice toward the edge of the abyss.

Torin

Torin

Gods protect me, they are failing. We are both going to fall.

The grotto is still ten feet away, but the path between them has vanished into a steep, shifting slide of shale and ice. F is sprawled, breathless and exposed, while the ground beneath Torin begins to tilt toward the black void below.

I'd use my agility to grab the staff and get back to Torin

SUCCESS (Legendary Agility, rolled +0)

The Wanderer and the Vault
F

F

Not today. The staff is mine, and his life is my bargain.

F moves like a blur of orange fur and fluid muscle, ignoring the treacherous shift of the mountain. With a burst of speed that defies the gale, they launch themselves off the sliding shale, fingers outstretched. The frost-covered rock crumbles beneath them, but F is already airborne.

Mid-air, they snag the geode staff by its rough, cooling head just before it slides over the edge. With a predatory grace, F twists their body, driving their blackened claws deep into the cliffside to arrest their momentum. They swing back toward the crumbling ledge, boots finding purchase on a shard of protruding granite. They land beside Torin, seizing his tunic to yank the man away from the encroaching abyss.

Torin

Torin

You… you saved me. You are a devil, but you saved me.

F

F

Save the breath for the climb. The grotto is right there.

I'd climb down to the grotto with Torin

SUCCESS (Legendary Agility, rolled -1)

The Wanderer and the Vault
F

F

His trembling is pathetic, but he is still useful.

F

F

Move, Torin. This ledge will not hold our weight for long.

Torin

Torin

The ice... it is spreading from the staff. It is eating the stone!

F glances at the geode staff. The jagged crystals are pulsating with a rhythmic, frigid hum, the frost spiderwebbing outward to fuse the disintegrating rock face back into a temporary, brittle bridge.

F

F

Then do not touch it. Keep your hands on the granite and follow my shadow.

Torin

Torin

If we reach the grotto, will you still let me go? Or will I be a corpse in the snow by sunrise?

+ New Item Acquired

Geode staff

I would steady the staff hoping it will steady the rocks, and I continue to take us lower down the mountain to The Grotto

PARTIAL (Terrible Health, rolled +0)

The Wanderer and the Vault

F steadies the geode staff against the rock. The frost hums louder, and the brittle bridge holds for one more breath.

A crack snaps through the ledge behind them. Pebbles and ice skitter into the void.

Torin

Torin

If it gives way now, we both fall.

F lowers them both a careful step at a time, the staff’s cold glow guiding the path down the slope.

Torin

Torin

The grotto is below the next shelf, but the rock is shifting. I cannot keep my footing if this keeps breaking.

A sharp groan rolls through the mountain. The bridge buckles, and a section of the path drops away behind them.

Torin

Torin

F, look out!

The ledge ahead shudders open, revealing the dark mouth of the grotto half-buried in ice, while the route behind them crumbles fast.

I continue to take us lower down the mountain to The Grotto

SUCCESS (Legendary Agility, rolled +4)

F drops low and moves with impossible speed, skimming the collapsing edge before the mountain can claim them.

Their claws catch frost, then stone, then the next safe patch. The staff bobs in one hand as the path narrows to a slick ribbon.

Torin

Torin

They are not even hesitating.

Torin scrambles after F, boots scraping, breath tearing in the thin air. Behind him, the ledge gives another violent shudder.

Torin

Torin

Keep going, just keep going!

F angles them both around a fallen slab, then cuts hard downhill, choosing the only line the mountain has not yet swallowed.

The grotto mouth swells ahead, dark and jagged, its ice crusted lip exhaling a pale mist.

Torin

Torin

There, that is it. If we reach the opening, we might survive this.

A final rumble passes under their feet as F reaches the threshold, with Torin one breath behind and the cliff still breaking apart at their backs.
