Ambush in the Ironwood Forest

The Ironwood forest is suffocating. Fog clings to the gnarled roots, muffling the sound of cracking twigs. F moves like a shadow, the purple fabric of her cloak billowing silently against the damp air. Suddenly, a steel bolt whistles through the gloom, thudding deep into the trunk of a pine inches from her head.

Haldor

Haldor

Show yourself, creature. I know your scent is burning in this thicket.

They have tracked me for three days. If I run, they chase. If I fight, I risk the very thing I am trying to overcome.

Footsteps crunch heavily on the frosted earth as a man steps from behind a cluster of ferns. He wears worn leather armor and grips a heavy crossbow, his eyes scanning the darkness with predatory focus. He catches the flicker of an orange-furred limb in his peripheral vision and pivots, raising his weapon with a steady, practiced motion.

Haldor

Haldor

Do not think to hide. My coin is already as good as spent. Will you face your end with honor, or must I drag your hide back in pieces?

Ambush in the Ironwood Forest

F moves in a blur of motion, her blackened claws slicing the air as she closes the distance in a single, fluid leap. She strikes the crossbow from Haldor’s grasp with a savage blow that sends the weapon spinning into the brush. Haldor staggers, blood blooming across his chest as he desperately swings his empty fists, but his vision swims and his strike passes harmlessly through the empty air where F stood a heartbeat before.

F

You... you are far swifter than the whispers suggested.

Haldor collapses to his knees, his face pale and his breath coming in ragged, wet gasps as he clutches the ruin of his tunic. F stands over him, her chest heaving, the thrill of the hunt clashing with the heavy weight of her own restraint.

F

F

I did not mean for this to happen. I wanted to disarm him, not end him. If the cycle of violence continues here, I will never find the peace I seek.

I want to try and fight the urge to end him.

FAILURE (Good Willpower, rolled -3)

Ambush in the Ironwood Forest

The red haze is creeping in again. My claws, they want to finish what I started. This man is broken, yet my blood sings for the final strike.

F’s muscles lock, her posture rigid as she steps closer to the wounded bounty hunter. Her breathing turns into a low, guttural growl that vibrates through the ironwood trees. The instinct to survive outweighs the desire for mercy, and her hand trembles, claws fully extended and digging into the forest soil.

F

F

You... you are no monster. You are something far worse.

F ignores his words. She leans over him, the dark hunger in her veins momentarily blinding her to his vulnerability. She reaches out, her hand hovering just inches from his throat.

F

F

Peace is a luxury for those who do not bleed.

I kill him, out of instinct

SUCCESS (Legendary Strength, rolled +0)

F does not hesitate. The instinct she has fought so hard to suppress surges, overriding her restraint with cold, mechanical efficiency. Her clawed hand strikes with the precision of a predator, ending the bounty hunter's struggle in a single, fluid motion. The forest falls into an unnatural silence, broken only by the sound of the wind through the ironwood canopy.

F

F

It is done. The cycle continues despite my prayers.

F retracts her claws, the dark energy in her veins receding, leaving behind a cold, hollow ache. She looks down at the stillness, the reality of her nature settling over her like a heavy shroud. She realizes that as long as she lives, the shadows will follow, and the blood will never truly wash away from her hands.

F

F

How can I ever find peace when I am the weapon that destroys it.
