The village yard holds its breath. Elders hurry the wounded back toward the hall, while the militia wavers in a ragged half-circle. From the road, the Warlord’s horn answers again, closer now.

Tenda Wildheart stands at the steps with the shattered seal at his feet. Zero rolls his shoulders beside him, grim and ready. Daisy keeps one arm out, guiding the elders back. Rex prowls low, eyes fixed on the gate.

The ledger is true. The seal is broken. He cannot command us by fear any longer.

The Bare-Handed Elder

Then bar the hall and save who you can. If he comes, let him find no easy obedience here.

A dust plume rises at the road. The Warlord arrives with his cloak snapping in the wind, but the soldiers at the front do not surge forward. They see the elders. They see the broken seal. Their line falters.

Mei steps into the open beside Tenda, chin high, facing her father without flinching. The whole yard waits on one breath, on one strike, on one choice.

I hold the Warlord at the gate by charging up my ki in an attempt to intimidate him.

Tenda draws in a slow breath, and his ki answers. A warm gold sheen gathers at his skin, bright enough to catch on the shattered seal at his feet.

The Elder With Lantern

The Elder With Lantern

That is no empty bravado. He stands like a wall.

The Bare-Handed Elder

The Bare-Handed Elder

Then let the wall hold. We move the wounded through the hall. Now.

The militia sees the glow and tightens, but does not advance. Several lower their spears and look away from the Warlord instead.

Mei

Mei

Father, stop here. Look at them. Look at what you have made of your own village.

The Warlord

The Warlord

You would stand with strangers against your blood?

Mei

Mei

I stand with the people you meant to bury.

Tenda holds the charge steady, silent and unmoving, and the yard feels the weight of it. The horn still sounds from the road, but the elders are inside the hall and the line at the gate has stopped obeying.

This Ends Here! I lunge forward and punch the warlord with a Ki infused punch.

Tenda surges off the steps in a blur of gold and muscle, crossing the yard before the Warlord can finish drawing breath. His fist drives into the Warlord’s chest with a ki-charged crack that folds the man back and steals the fight from his stance.

The impact throws dust and broken seal shards across the stones. The Warlord staggers hard, one heel skidding, cloak snapping wide as his guard line flinches at the sound.

The Warlord

The Warlord

You dare.

A ripple runs through the militia. Several spears dip. Others freeze, eyes jumping between the fallen seal, the elders inside, and the man who just hit their lord.

The Bare-Handed Elder

The Bare-Handed Elder

Move now, all of you. Inside, inside!

Daisy and the last villagers hurry through the hall doors as the lantern swings wildly in the elder’s grip. Rex prowls forward at Tenda’s flank, hackles raised, while Mei keeps her ground beside the blow that changed everything.

The Warlord lifts a hand to his bruised chest, anger sharpening into calculation. The horn still beats from the road, and now the yard waits on what he does next.

I press the attack on the warlord. This time using my Ki to infuse a flying kick.

Tenda launches again, ki flashing along his leg as he whips into the air. His flying kick knifes into the Warlord’s side, snapping the man sideways and driving him off his footing.

The Warlord

The Warlord

Gah.

The Warlord crashes to one knee in the yard, cloak tangled, one hand braced on the stones. Soldiers recoil from the sudden blow, and the line breaks wider under their staring.

Mei

Mei

Stay down, Father.

Inside the hall, the last villagers disappear beyond the doors. The Elder With Lantern shoves the panels shut with shaking hands while the broken wax seal lies in the dust near the threshold.

The Bare-Handed Elder

The Bare-Handed Elder

The hall is clear. Pull back, all of you!

Rex plants himself between Tenda and the kneeling warlord, teeth bared. The horn still rolls from the road, but the militia no longer looks eager to answer it.

The Warlord

The Warlord

You think this ends here?

I do! I drive the warlord back from the gate, this time by flaring my aura to such extremes that it frightens him.

Tenda’s aura erupts wider, bright enough to throw hard gold over the yard stones. The Warlord flinches as if struck again, his weight pulling back from the gate.

The Warlord

The Warlord

Enough. Hold your line, all of you.

The militia hesitates, seeing their master recoil. A few take half-steps back instead of forward, and the formation loosens under the glare.

Mei

Mei

He feels it. Keep him there.

Rex prowls one pace with bared teeth, and the Warlord yields another step. The broken wax seal lies between them, dusted by the tremor in the stones.

The Elder With Lantern

The Elder With Lantern

The last of them are inside. Shut it now.

The hall doors swing closed behind the villagers with a final thud. Tenda’s flare leaves his forearm trembling, and the yard falls into a stunned, dangerous pause as the horn keeps sounding from the road.

They are choosing themselves now.

The militia's line finally breaks, weapons lowering as the gate stands free.

The hall is sealed. The wounded are safe.

Rex

Then hold the line no longer. It's done.

Tenda Wildheart stood at the village gate with the Warlord forced back and his control broken. Behind sealed doors, the villagers lived, and the militia carried the weight of their own choice. The horn faded into the road, and the quiet that followed belonged to those who had earned it.
