Tenda Wildheart slips through the granary door with the others, and the village vanishes behind a curtain of dark timber. Inside, the air is warm, dusty, and thick with grain. Sacks rise in uneven stacks, and the horn outside keeps thudding closer through the walls.
Zero leans a shoulder to the door, listening. Rex pads low between the sacks, nostrils flaring. Daisy presses a hand to her satchel, already scanning for anyone hurt. Mei and Kaelen hover near Tenda, tense and ready.

Zero
If that horn reaches the square, we do not get a second breath.

Daisy
The elders are safe for the moment, but the villagers are not. We need to decide fast.
Outside, boots scrape across packed road. A shadow passes the slats, then moves on. The granary stays sealed, but the whole building feels like it is holding its breath.

Tenda Wildheart
The horn is closer than before.

Mei
My father will not stop at the hall. If we leave them here, he will surround the village.

Kaelen
Then we choose the ground. Or we get them out while the road is still confused.

Get the elders and villagers out of danger
“I signal the group to move toward the rear exit to lead the villagers away.”
FAILURE (Fair Tactics, rolled +0)

Tenda snaps two fingers toward the rear wall, a sharp, silent signal for the others to shift. Mei catches it first and starts moving, but the granary groans as heavy feet thud past outside the slats. The rear exit is there, narrow and dark, yet the sound beyond it turns the retreat into a trap.

Zero
Too late for quiet. They are circling the back.
Daisy’s gaze darts to the sacks, then to the rear door, reading the space in a breath. Rex lowers himself even further, hackles tight, listening to the walls like they might speak. The horn outside answers with another hard blast, close enough to shake dust loose from the beams.

Kaelen
The rear lane is watched. We do not run blind.

Tenda Wildheart
The back exit is still usable, but not cleanly.
Tenda checks the line of sacks and the doorframe in one glance, then stops his group short before they commit. Through a crack in the boards, he catches movement in the alley, a torchlight sweep, and the flash of the broken wax seal on a dropped shield near the steps outside the hall.
Mei shifts from escape to choice, her hand lifting toward the side wall. "There is a service hatch into the feed shed," she says. "It opens behind the pens. If we hold this room for a moment, we can pull people through there."
“I lead them to the feed shed hatch”
SUCCESS (Legendary Agility, rolled +0)

Tenda does not waste a word. He snaps the group into motion and threads them toward the side wall, where Mei’s hidden hatch waits low in the grain-dust shadow.
Kaelen drops first to one knee and hauls at the concealed latch, while Daisy turns her body to shield the opening from the slatted light. Outside, boots scrape past, and the horn blows again from the road.

Mei
Here, quickly. Once we are through, I can bar it from the other side.
Rex slips to the hatch mouth, head low, then vanishes through it with a soft thump from below. The gap opens into the feed shed, smelling of straw and animals, and the first rush of enemy torchlight stays trapped outside.

Tenda Wildheart
The hatch opens into the shed.
Tenda ducks through after Rex, and the others follow in a tight stream. The granary wall shuts the village sounds to a muffled rumble behind them.
In the feed shed, stacked crates and hanging tack cut the room into cover and blind corners, but the rear boards still rattle under searching hands. The broken wax seal on the steps outside remains visible through a thin gap in the slats, and the next choice hangs on whether they fortify here or keep moving.
“I bar the feed shed hatch”
SUCCESS (Superb Strength, rolled +1)

Tenda plants both hands on the hatch cover and drives it down until the wood bites shut. The straw light narrows to a thin seam, then vanishes as the bar slides into place with a solid clack.

Mei
Good. They will not lift that from outside without time.
Kaelen braces the hatch frame and listens. Above them, boots pass once more, slower now, as if the searchers have paused at the missing opening. The granary floor trembles with a distant thud, and dust sifts from the beams.

Tenda Wildheart
The hatch holds.
Rex circles the shed in a tight arc and stops at the rear boards, nose lifted toward the cracks. Daisy lowers her satchel beside the sacks and looks toward the only weak points left, the slats and the side door.

Zero
Better. Now we choose our own fight, instead of theirs.
Outside, the horn sounds again from the road, sharper than before. Through the slatted gap, the broken wax seal on the steps flashes in and out of view as torchlight shifts. The shed is sealed, but the village still is not.
“I listen for a safe way through the granary”
SUCCESS (Good Perception, rolled +0)

Tenda goes still and lets the shed breathe around him. Under the horn and the floor tremor, he catches another sound, a thin scrape beneath the side door, then the wet hiss of a boot dragging mud over packed earth.

Tenda Wildheart
The side door is being tested.
He shifts two steps to the wall seam and listens again. The rear boards answer with one solid thump, but the side hinges groan once, then stop, as if someone outside has found the latch and is deciding whether to force it.
Tenda raises a hand, and the room tightens with him. Mei freezes by the hatch. Kaelen angles his head toward the door. Rex plants himself at the rear boards, hackles high.
Then Tenda hears it, a narrow gap in the barn wall to the west, where stale air slips through cracked slats and the outer yard is quiet for one measured breath. Not safe, but open.
The answer costs him a scrape of splinter from the slat as he kneels in too fast. A thin line of blood dots his knuckle, but the route is clear.

Zero
We have a way out. Before they circle this shed.
“I slip through the slatted gap”
SUCCESS (Legendary Agility, rolled +1)

Tenda slips his shoulder into the slatted gap and turns sideways, breathing out as wood brushes his tunic. Dust swirls behind him when he clears the wall, and the shed falls away into the dark outer yard.
He lands light in the straw-strewn service path beyond the shed, crouched low between stacked feed sacks and a leaning cart. The narrow exit stays open behind him just long enough for the others to follow if they choose.
Inside the shed, the horn blares again from the road, closer now. Boots scrape past the far boards, but the searchers have not yet noticed the broken slats or the empty space Tenda leaves behind.

Zero
Move. If they find this gap, we lose the whole yard.
Mei reaches the opening first, already half-turned to herd the others through. Kaelen keeps one eye on the hatch and one on the dark yard, while Rex slips after the scent with his body low and ready.
Beyond them, the village steps are still visible through a break in the buildings, and the broken wax seal lies somewhere up there in the hall’s spill of light. For now, though, this side path gives them cover, and the chase is no longer pinned to the shed walls.
“I seal the service path behind us”
SUCCESS (Superb Strength, rolled +1)

Tenda braces at the mouth of the service path and drives his shoulder and forearm into the bent slats. Wood groans, then jams hard against the frame, pinning the gap shut behind the retreating group.

Zero
Good. Now it is their problem.
On the far side, the searchers strike the shed wall and get only a dull thud. Dust sifts from the cracks, but no light leaks through the sealed opening.

Mei
They will have to circle. We have a breath of space.
Kaelen steps back into the service path and wedges a feed sack against the warped boards, making the barricade look less like an accident and more like a dead end.

Daisy
The yard is quiet enough to move, for the moment.
Rex plants himself at the path entrance, hackles raised, while the horn still calls from the road beyond the village. The route behind them is closed now, and the party must choose whether to hold this pocket or keep running before the search spreads.
“I rush the villagers toward the rear route”
SUCCESS (Legendary Agility, rolled +0)

Tenda drives the villagers toward the rear route, cutting across the feed shed in a low, urgent line. Shoes scrape straw, and the group shifts from hiding to movement as if a latch has finally been released.

Daisy
This way, keep low. Stay together.
Daisy takes the first two villagers by the sleeves and guides them under the beam, while Mei turns back to check the shed mouth. The horn outside answers with a rough, distant note.

Mei
If they circle the yard, this path gives us a clean break.
Kaelen shifts the feed sack barricade aside just enough to open the service path, then angles his body to shield the gap. Rex presses forward at the rear, forcing anyone watching to think twice.

Zero
Good. Move before they decide to be clever.
One by one, the villagers spill through the narrow route and out of the shed's cover. The line clears fast, and the rear passage takes everyone beyond the worst of the search.
Behind them, the granary stays shut, the shed holds, and the horn keeps calling from the road. The party reaches the safer end of the rear route, but the village is still not free.
“Are enemy fighters circling the yard?”
YES (Likely, rolled 23)

Tenda Wildheart
The horn is not just calling for a search. It is coordinating a pincer.
Tenda pauses at the edge of the rear route, his eyes catching the glint of steel through the gaps in the outer fence. A squad of soldiers moves in perfect, silent unison, closing the perimeter of the yard from the north and south.

Mei
They are not searching anymore, Tenda. They are sealing the exits.
“Tenda composes himself and lets out a long sigh. "Well," he says, "Looks like we go on the offensive. Not a single one of them gets through to the villagers. We fight." His eyes glow and he prepares for battle.”
YES (Likely, rolled 50)

Tenda Wildheart
Well, looks like we go on the offensive. Not a single one of them gets through to the villagers. We fight.

Tenda Wildheart
The pincer movement leaves no room for retreat. If I strike the center of their line, the pressure on the flanks will break.
Tenda's eyes flare with a faint, golden luminescence as he channels his internal energy, the air around his fists beginning to hum with static. Beyond the fence, the soldiers stop their advance, sensing the sudden shift in the atmosphere as the distant horn blares once more, sharper and more urgent than before.
“I charge up My Ki and aim my hand at the center of their line. I say to the team, "Once i attack, take advantage of the chaos!" I launch my Ki in a shockwave from my out stretched hand to the center of their line and scream!”
YES (Likely, rolled 47)

Tenda Wildheart
Once I attack, take advantage of the chaos!
Tenda thrusts his palm forward, releasing a concentrated blast of golden chi that shatters the wooden fence into splinters. The shockwave slams into the center of the enemy line, sending soldiers sprawling and creating a violent, dust-choked breach in their formation.

The Militia Sergeant
Hold the line! Do not let them break through!
“I rush with Zero and Rex. We push the attack through the breach.”
YES (Likely, rolled 36)

Tenda Wildheart
The breach is wide enough. If we move now, we can scatter them before they reform.
Beyond the splintered fence, the enemy line is in total disarray, with the soldiers struggling to regain their footing amidst the debris. A clear path to the village square lies open, momentarily unguarded as the shockwave continues to ripple through the yard.
“I pull the others through the opening”
SUCCESS (Superb Strength, rolled +0)

Tenda hooks an arm under Kaelen’s shoulder and drives forward, hauling them through the gap before the soldiers can reset. The broken fence spits splinters behind them as the yard opens toward the square.
Mei stumbles through after him, then turns and catches Daisy by the wrist, pulling her clear. The last of the dust clears enough to show the breach widening under the soldiers’ stumbling feet.
Rex lunges through last, snapping at the nearest shadowed shape in the smoke without making contact, just enough to keep the line back. Zero comes in with his blade high, covering the retreating flank.

Mei
The square is open. Move, now.
Outside, the horn cuts again from the road, closer this time. On the council steps beyond the yard, the broken wax seal lies where it fell, bright against the stone.
The party clears the opening together, shoulders tight, weapons and hands ready. Behind them, the soldiers remain tangled in debris and dust, too disordered to close immediately.

Zero
We’ve got a lane. Keep it.
“I push for the council steps”
SUCCESS (Legendary Agility, rolled +2)

Tenda drives the last stretch of yard in a straight burst, and the open square swallows him. The council steps rise ahead, the broken wax seal still bright on the stone.
Zero reaches the lane beside him, blade angled out. Mei and Daisy fan in behind, while Rex snaps his attention toward the yard mouth, ready to punish anyone who follows.
The soldiers at the breach slow in the dust, too tangled to answer fast. Their line does not break clean, but it fails to close.
Tenda plants himself at the foot of the council steps, shoulders squared to the square, not looking back. The route behind him remains open for a breath, then the enemy horn sounds again from the road.

Mei
The steps are ours. Hold here.
From the square edge, villagers peer from doorways and shutters, startled but still present. The party has reached the steps, but the horn says the next wave is coming.
