Salt wind lashes the docks of Oakhaven, carrying tar, fish, and the stink of wet rope. Kael Umal stands out at once, black armor gleaming like a night sky split with cold stars.
A notice board rattles beside the pier, crowded with recruitment slips. Ahead, four dockworkers bar the way to the taverns, feet planted wide, palms open for coin.

The Dockworker Leader
Passage costs a silver, shadow knight. Oakhaven does not grant free roads to strangers with swords.
The woman at their center hooks a thumb toward the tavern row, where voices and tankards spill through the afternoon haze. Her crew watches Kael Umal, measuring armor, blade, and temper.

Kael Umal
The toll looks improvised, not official.
A bell claps somewhere inland. Nearby merchants slow their work, pretending not to listen. One of the posted slips flutters loose and skates across the boards.

The Dockworker Leader
Pay, turn back, or prove you belong on this street. Your choice.

Get past the dockworkers
“A city guard walks up and the dock bullies run off. The city guard informs the captain that they caught someone trying to sneak onto the captains ship, the Star Streak. The guard asks the captain what do you want to do with the young lad. The captain, Kael Umal, says that instead of throwing them in jail, the young their can be made to be his new cabin boy. The first new recruit for the Star Streak.”
SUCCESS (Mediocre Diplomacy, rolled +1)

Boots thud in from the pier road, and the dockworkers flinch apart as a city guard pushes through their line. Her hand rests on her baton, but her stare lands first on the leader, not on Kael Umal.

The Dockworker Leader
We had the toll under control, Captain. This one was trying to slip aboard the Star Streak.
Two of the dockworkers back away at once. The side path opens with them, boards creaking as their shoulders lose the fight out of them.

The City Guard
Caught sneaking onto your ship, sir. A young lad, light-fingered and stubborn. What do you want done with him?

Kael Umal
Not jail. Bring him to me. He can serve as my new cabin boy on the Star Streak.
The guard nods once and turns on her heel. The leader’s jaw tightens, but she steps aside, and her crew follows. The way to the taverns and the harbor street is clear.
A slim young thief is hauled forward by the guard, damp-haired and wide-eyed, as the first step toward the Star Streak’s crew. The guard waits for Kael Umal’s next word.

“The young thief is actually the character Miles”
SUCCESS (Great Perception, rolled -1)
Kael Umal studies the thief’s damp hair, the stubborn set of the chin, the way the guard keeps a steadying hand on one narrow shoulder. The face clicks into place.

Kael Umal
Miles.
The guard does not notice the recognition, only the brief stillness in Kael Umal’s posture as the realization lands.

Miles
I did not steal from him, I swear. I just needed the chance to get aboard.
Her words come too quick, too sharp, and the disguise sits loose on her now, as if the name itself has stripped away the pretense.

The City Guard
Then speak plain, boy. The captain has named you cabin boy, so make yourself useful.
The leader of the dockworkers glances toward the clear lane, measuring whether to object, but the guard’s presence keeps her silent.
Miles is at Kael Umal’s side at last, and the open way to the harbor street waits for his next command.
✓ Quest Accepted
Bring Miles aboard as cabin boy
“The first crew member is recruited. I put "Miles" to work immediately scrubbing and cleaning the lavish washroom and swabbing the deck of the ship.”
SUCCESS (Mediocre Leadership, rolled -1)

Kael Umal gives a short order, and Miles snaps to it. The guard releases her, and she shoves damp hair from her face before hurrying after him toward the ship lanes.

Miles
A cabin boy, then. I can scrub, haul, and keep quiet when I need to.
Kael points her first to the lavished washroom, then to the deck buckets lined near the gangway. The task is plain, immediate, and impossible to mistake.
Miles takes the pail with both hands and heads off at once, jaw set against any complaint. The city guard watches her go, satisfied enough to step back.

The City Guard
Keep him busy and keep him honest. If he runs, I will hear of it.
The dockworkers stay off the lane, but the toll board rattles hard in the salt wind, loud enough to turn a few heads.
Kael gains a first pair of willing hands, but the clatter of work on the pier draws fresh eyes toward his ship.
“Next arrive Anna the ships carpenter and Maisie the new navigator for the Star Streak.”
FAILURE (Mediocre Leadership, rolled -3)

At the gangway, Kael brings Anna and Maisie together before the deck, making the choice plain without ceremony. The ship waits, the dock wind tugs at cloaks and hair, and the moment asks for agreement he does not get to command.

Anna
I am a carpenter, not a passenger. If I come aboard, I want work, space for my tools, and no one wasting my timber.

Maisie
And I am the navigator. If you want me aboard, you give me charts, a quiet place to think, and say where you mean to sail.
Kael’s attempt lands unevenly. Anna keeps her chin high and plants a hand on her satchel, while Maisie studies the deck like she is measuring every promise against the boards beneath it.

The City Guard
If they board under your name, then they board under your rules. Make them useful, or do not waste the harbor’s patience.
For a breath, the lane stays open, but the dockside attention shifts. The two women do not move as one crew yet, only as two strangers deciding whether to step over Kael’s threshold.

Maisie
I will come, but I am not agreeing to blind passage. I want the route stated before the tide turns.
“"Agreed. You will have whatever you require for the journey. Coin is no matter to me." I say. I welcome them both aboard and show them around the ship and to their personal quarters.”
SUCCESS (Mediocre Diplomacy, rolled +0)

Kael turns from the gangway and leads them aboard, the plank creaking under three sets of footsteps. The dock falls away behind them, and the ship takes them in without ceremony.

Kael Umal
You will have what you need for the journey. Come aboard.
Anna steps onto the deck first, eyes already measuring timber, rails, and tool space. Maisie follows with her chart case hugged close, watching where the ship might hide its secrets.

Anna
Then show me where the work begins. I will not have my tools buried under cargo.

Maisie
And show me the route room. If I am to steer your course, I need to know where to lay my charts.
Kael answers them by walking, not arguing, and the corridor swallows the sound of the docks. He points out the carpenter’s space, the chart table, and the narrow quarters set aside for each of them.
By the time he returns them below, the ship has gained two new hands and lost a little quiet. A crate is shifted too hard, and a mug rattles loose somewhere aft, the first small cost of making room.

Anna
This will do, for now. Keep the timber dry, and I will keep the hull honest.

Maisie
And I will want the charts brought out soon. Tell me where you mean to sail, Kael Umal.
