At last the trees shift. The Northwoods thin behind Embers Firestarter and the courier, and the Lost Woods close around them, ancient limbs knotted overhead. The air turns still and heavy, green light sinking into moss and black roots.
Embers steps carefully over a hollow log as the path narrows into a tunnel of fern and thorn. The waterskin bumps softly in her hand. Ahead, the courier slows and lifts her map, her shoulders tightening.

The Royal Courier
This is not on the road I marked.
She turns the page, then the next, frowning deeper at every line. The forest seems to press closer, swallowing birdcall and breeze alike. Even the ground feels different here, springy with rot and old rain.

The Royal Courier
I know these woods a little, but not this part. We should not linger.
A dark shape moves between the trunks far ahead, only a flicker of fur and watchful eyes before it slips away. The courier freezes. Embers catches the sense of being seen from more than one direction.

Get past the lurking wolf
“Embers immediately drops the water skin and grabs a nearby stone. With deft familiar movements she readies her sling. She peers into the dense foliage trying to trace the path and movement of the Wolf all the while questioning to herself is this the same wolf or a different wolf”
SUCCESS (Superb Perception, rolled -2)

Embers lets the waterskin slip from her fingers and it thuds into the leaves. Her small hand closes around a stone, then the sling follows in a quick, practiced motion.

Embers Firestarter
Same trail... or a different wolf?
She peers into the brush, eyes tracking the torn fern and the split stems. The movement ahead is wrong for one body now, too light here, too sudden there.
Not one watcher. Two brief shifts in the dark, one low and one wider apart, both vanishing between the roots.

The Royal Courier
There, by the yew. I saw it too. We are being circled.
The courier lowers her map and starts to back toward a knuckled root, giving Embers a clear lane toward the brush.
At the edge of the green shadow, the wolf slips back into view, still wary, while another disturbed patch of ferns suggests its path breaks away deeper into the Lost Woods.

Stone
“In a fit of desperation embers thinks back to other events that have been so hopeless and remembers the Whispers. They say to just ask and it will be granted. Ember's doesn't like to listen to The Whispers but sometimes it's the only way out. With a great deal of effort she focuses her mind and listens for the voices that will tell her what to do and slowly lifts her hand pointing one hand at each wolf and a spark begins to form slowly developing into a fireball”
SUCCESS (Good Willpower, rolled +1)

Embers holds still, and the air around her seems to tighten. The little spark in her palm swells as if it hears her fear and answers it.
One wolf freezes between the roots. The other flinches in the brush, ears flat, both bodies suddenly unsure of the hunt.

Embers Firestarter
A fireball. Just enough.
Heat blooms across the leaves. The courier jerks back, eyes wide, while the nearest wolf gives ground with a low, uncertain huff.

The Royal Courier
Embers, wait. They are backing off.
The glowing orb steadies above Embers' hand, bright against the dark roots. Both wolves retreat into the green tangle, their shapes broken by ferns and shadow.
The courier lowers her map again, breathing hard, and points toward a narrow rise where the trees thin slightly. She does not move until Embers chooses whether to follow.
