Embers Firestarter

The Slaver's Warning

Ash drifts in thin ribbons as the Royal Courier stops beside a standing stone. Her hand tightens on her blade hilt, and she points at the carvings cut deep into the gray rock.

The Royal Courier

The Royal Courier

These marks, I know them. Grey Slaver rites.

The Woodsman steps to the front, grim-faced, while Embers studies the etched spiral and bone-like runes. The symbols are not just a trail. They are a warning.

Embers Firestarter

Embers Firestarter

This path leads into something made for me.

The Woodsman

The Woodsman

He is not hunting blind. He is guiding us where he wants us.

The Courier traces one carving with two fingers, then withdraws as if the stone burns. The route ahead does not open to a home. It opens to a gauntlet, and Grayman is already inside it.

The Royal Courier

The Royal Courier

If we keep going, we face the trap together. If we turn back, he keeps the advantage.

Get past the Grey Slaver gauntlet

Amber's will ready her sling and gather her will prepare to face whatever The Gray Man has to offer with her two companions she believes she stands a chance alone she fears the chase will never end

SUCCESS (Legendary Willpower, rolled +0)

The Slaver's Warning

Embers draws her sling up and wraps the cord around her small fist, steadying herself beside the warning stone. The ash wind still bites, but her hands do not shake.

The Royal Courier lowers her blade a fraction, then looks from the carvings to Embers with hard concern. The Woodsman shifts closer, turning his body toward the open plain as if listening for a footstep no one else can hear.

The Royal Courier

The Royal Courier

If Grayman built this place for you, then we do not walk it blind. We walk it together.

The Woodsman

The Woodsman

And if there is a path through, I will find it before he closes the net.

Embers lifts her chin toward the brighter horizon. The ritual marks seem less like a threat now and more like a map, ugly but readable.

For a breath, the ash around the stone lies still. Then a thin black line appears in the dust ahead, as if something heavy has been dragged there recently.

The Courier spots it at the same moment Embers does, and her voice drops to a warning whisper. "There. Someone went through recently. Do we follow the trail, or stay with the stone and risk being cornered?"

They follow the trail but with caution. Embers will use her superior senses to try to get a feel for what is around her is there danger or have they made it through

SUCCESS (Legendary Perception, rolled +1)

The Slaver's Warning

Embers eases onto the black trail, keeping her steps light. The ash around it is wrong, packed tight by many passes, then suddenly scuffed by a single hurried turn.

She lifts her gaze and catches it, a half-hidden line of soot on the wind, carrying the sharp sting of old smoke and fresh tar. Something has moved here recently, and it did not wander.

Embers Firestarter

Embers Firestarter

The trail is meant to be seen.

The Woodsman

The Woodsman

A lure, then. But it is fresh, and fresh tracks tell truths older than traps.

The Royal Courier

The Royal Courier

Look, the drag marks veer toward the stone, then away again. They are steering us, not hiding from us.

The Woodsman crouches and brushes ash from a broken reed marker. Beneath it, a second path shows through, narrow and deliberate, leading between two ash-blasted rises.

Embers sees it all at once, the trail, the marker, the safer line tucked under the wind. Ahead, the plain opens into a darker hollow where something waits in silence.

What is going on she thinks to herself this is crazy these two adults are making me choose which way we go as if I'm someone important I'm eight their adults look at The Woodsman which way would you go

SUCCESS (Great Reasoning, rolled +1)

The Slaver's Warning

Embers looks up at The Woodsman and asks which way he would go.

The Woodsman

The Woodsman

I would take the narrow path. It was hidden on purpose, which means someone wanted it found by careful feet, not careless ones.

The Royal Courier

The Royal Courier

And if it is a test, then it tests trust as much as courage. That is useful to know.

The Woodsman

The Woodsman

When I lived alone, I learned this. A home is not just shelter. It is where the path stops trying to lie to you.

The Royal Courier

The Royal Courier

She studies Embers with softened eyes, as if measuring how much honesty a child can carry at once.

The Woodsman offers Embers his open hand, not to pull her forward, only to let her choose. The ash wind hushes for a breath around the hidden route.

The Royal Courier

The Royal Courier

Come on then, little one. Let us see what the quieter road is willing to give us.

Let's follow the quiet road then she says with determination. And using the skills that The Woodsman has taught her she will track the difficult path led in secret

FAILURE (Fair Survival, rolled -2)

The Slaver's Warning

Embers steps onto the hidden route, but the ash shifts under her feet like thin skin over a sinkhole.

Embers Firestarter

Embers Firestarter

Let’s take the quiet road.

The narrow path seems to vanish ahead, its edges blurred by drifting gray, and the darker hollow coughs up a low, stale wind.

The Woodsman

The Woodsman

Hold still. That line in the ash is not old. Someone has crossed it twice, and one set of tracks turns back on itself.

The Royal Courier

The Royal Courier

A false trail, then. Or a warning made to look like one.

Embers studies the ground, and the secret route reveals a second mark beneath the first, a narrow heel print cut by a dragging toe, too small for the Woodsman, too careful for a beast.

The Woodsman

The Woodsman

We are not alone on this path. And whoever made that mark wanted us to see it now.

I uses her past knowledge and the skills that the Woodman has taught her to try and identify what could possibly make such a mark

FAILURE (Fair Survival, rolled -3)

The Slaver's Warning

The drag mark is not from a body, but from a bundle dragged low, something wrapped and kept just above the ash.

Embers Firestarter

Embers Firestarter

Not a beast. Too straight for that.

The Woodsman

The Woodsman

See the shallow twin cuts beside it. A pole, or a stretcher. Someone carried a load with care.

The Royal Courier

The Royal Courier

And left the heel print on purpose. To teach us how small the carrier was, or to make us follow.

A colder gust skims the ground and parts the ash. For an instant, a scrap of woven cord shows under the surface, snapped and half-buried near the darker hollow.

The Woodsman

The Woodsman

That cord is fresh. We are near the place they used as a handoff.

The hollow exhales again, and somewhere ahead, a stone scrapes against stone, slow and deliberate, as if something hidden is being opened.

Amber's looks up at Horror at the pair. Does that mean they're getting ready to sacrifice someone else?

SUCCESS (Legendary Perception, rolled +2)

The Slaver's Warning

The Royal Courier’s face drains of color as she looks from the cord to the dark hollow beyond it.

Embers Firestarter

Embers Firestarter

Does that mean they are getting ready to sacrifice someone else?

The Royal Courier

The Royal Courier

Yes. Or they already have. That cord is used to bind offerings, not cargo.

The Woodsman

The Woodsman

If the cord is fresh, then the handoff was recent. We are not late by much.

The Woodsman crouches and brushes ash aside with two fingers, uncovering a shallow ring of blackened stone marks around the hollow’s lip.

The Royal Courier

The Royal Courier

A receiving circle. They brought someone here, and they meant for others to follow.

The Woodsman

The Woodsman

Then we have the shape of it now. A trap made to look like a trail, with a stolen life at the center of it.

The Courier lowers her blade and glances to Embers, softer now, while the wind keeps worrying at the ash around their boots.

If there's even a chance we have to save them it doesn't matter if it's a trap we must go she can begin walking towards the Trap determination strong in her eyes she readies her sling and her makeshift Club

SUCCESS (Legendary Willpower, rolled +3)

The Slaver's Warning

Embers steps off the ash-sheltered edge and toward the hollow, sling in one hand, her makeshift club in the other.

The Royal Courier

The Royal Courier

Embers, wait. If it is a snare, it may still bite.

The little girl does not stop. The cord drags free of the ash behind her, and the blackened ring lies open at her feet.

The Woodsman

The Woodsman

She has chosen. Then we go with her.

Ash gusts through the hollow mouth, and something pale glints below the stone circle, half hidden in the dark.

The Royal Courier

The Royal Courier

That is no empty pit. Someone is down there.

Embers plants herself at the edge, peering down with fierce focus, ready to strike if a hand or face rises from below.

Using her Keen eyes she will look into the pit and identify what is going on if it is possible that someone is still alive down there she will seek to understand who they are what they are and more importantly if they are a child

SUCCESS (Legendary Perception, rolled -3)

Embers leans farther over the stone lip, and the darkness below gives up its shape.

It is a child. Small, bound in ash-gray cord, face streaked with soot and tears.

The Royal Courier

The Royal Courier

By the roots... there is someone alive down there.

The pale glint is a chain clasp at the child’s throat, catching the ash light as they shiver against the pit wall.

The Woodsman

The Woodsman

A captive, and marked. Grey Slaver work.

Below them, the child lifts their head at Embers’ silhouette and flinches, but does not cry out.

The Royal Courier

The Royal Courier

Embers, can you see a way to reach them, or do we pull them up another way?

Turning to The Woodsman she asks do you have a rope if so tie it around my waist and lower me down I will set them free

SUCCESS (Fair Athletics, rolled +1)

The Slaver's Warning
Embers Firestarter

Embers Firestarter

Do you have rope? Tie it around my waist and lower me down. I will set them free.

The Woodsman answers at once, yanking a coil from beneath his cloak. Ash skates over the stone as he threads it fast around Embers with practiced hands.

The Woodsman

The Woodsman

Hold steady, little ember. I have you.

He braces against a root and eases her toward the hollow. The cord takes her weight cleanly, and the child below watches with wide, stunned eyes.

Embers reaches the ledge, slips one small hand under the ash-gray bindings, and works at the knot. The cord gives. The chain clasp drops cold against the stone.

The Royal Courier

The Royal Courier

Good. Now lift them, carefully.

The child rises free of the pit in a coughing tumble, clutching Embers’ sleeve. Beneath the loosened cord, a black wax seal is hidden against their shirt, stamped with a slaver mark.

The Woodsman

The Woodsman

Someone has marked this one for taking. Quickly, before the hollow wakes again.

Embers will quickly remove the child's shirt and throw it back into the pit everyone knows that the slavers can track by their signs, then grasping the child by the hand the four of them will make for cover

SUCCESS (Fair Survival, rolled +2)

The Slaver's Warning

Embers tears the slaver-marked shirt free in one quick pull and flings it back into the hollow. The black seal disappears into the ash below.

The child flinches at the cold air, then clutches Embers’ hand hard. The Woodsman shifts beside them, ready to move.

The Royal Courier

The Royal Courier

Good. Keep low, all of you. The wind will hide our steps for a moment.

Embers leads the child away from the rim, and the trio slips behind a jagged line of dead stone. Ash hisses over their tracks almost at once.

The Woodsman

The Woodsman

The seal is gone, but the hollow is not empty. Something under it still listens.

From the pit, a thin scraping answers, faint but sure, as if stone is turning beneath stone.

The Royal Courier

The Royal Courier

Did you hear that? There is another way out, or another thing coming in. Which do we face first?

Having found her courage Amber's gathers her will. It is time to face what lurks beneath the ash. She will ready her sling once again and begin to speak to the whispers asking for guidance asking for help but most importantly asking for power to defend the child

SUCCESS (Legendary Willpower, rolled +2)

The Slaver's Warning

Embers plants her feet in the ash and lifts the sling into both hands, small and steady against the wind.

Embers Firestarter

Embers Firestarter

The whispers are close.

Her breath goes quiet. The air around the hollow tightens, and the scraping below seems to pause to listen.

A low murmur slips up through the ash, thin as smoke, and gathers around her fingers.

The Woodsman

The Woodsman

There. It hears you. Keep your mind sharp, Embers.

The Royal Courier

The Royal Courier

If it answers, let it answer fast. I do not like that sound below us.

The sling cord warms in Embers’ grip. A pale ember-glow flickers at the pouch, and the ash at her feet lifts in a brief spiral.

From under the hollow, the scraping shifts direction, as if whatever waits beneath has turned toward her voice.

Well come on then let's have at you she says with confidence edging slightly further away from the pit. Whatever's down there it needs to show itself

SUCCESS (Legendary Willpower, rolled +1)

The Slaver's Warning

Embers slides backward from the pit, just enough to force the dark to reach for her. The ash at the rim stirs in answer, as if something below has found the edge of her voice.

A shape rises in the hollow, not a body, but a mask of black stone and old soot, lifting on a pulse of buried magic. Fine cracks glow dull red across its surface.

The Woodsman

The Woodsman

That is no simple trap. It is a watcher, or the shell of one.

The Royal Courier

The Royal Courier

Embers, keep it talking. I can see a seam in the bindings.

Embers Firestarter

Embers Firestarter

Well come on then. Let's have at you.

At her challenge, the stone mask turns fully toward her. Something clicks inside the hollow, and the hidden mouth of the pit opens wider, spilling a breath of warm ash.

The ember-glow in her sling pouch flares once, bright enough to outline a narrow route along the dead stone beside the hollow, a safe step where the ash has not yet settled.

Embers will use this moment to step upon the safe path the child clutched behind her. Without taking her eyes from this strange thing she asks what are you what do you want why do you haunt me

SUCCESS (Legendary Perception, rolled +0)

The Slaver's Warning

Embers steps onto the ember-lit path, each foot placed with care above the ash. The black stone mask stays fixed on her, silent and waiting.

Embers Firestarter

Embers Firestarter

What are you? What do you want? Why do you haunt me?

The mask does not answer at once. The red cracks pulse once, and the warm breath from the pit softens, less like a snarl and more like a held breath.

The Woodsman

The Woodsman

It hears you, little one. Old things listen when called by name, even when they have forgotten their own.

The Royal Courier

The Royal Courier

Then let it answer. We have walked too far to be fooled by silence now.

The glow at Embers' feet steadies, guiding her past the rim. Behind her, the rescued child peeks from cover and then ducks back, still safe.

The Woodsman

The Woodsman

I have seen this kind of mark before, in places men bury on purpose. It is not hunting you alone, Embers. It is waiting for whoever still remembers how to resist.

The mask tilts, and a rasping voice leaks from the stone, thin as ash on wind. The Woodsman and the Courier fall quiet, listening.

Continue to wait for answers

SUCCESS (Legendary Willpower, rolled -1)

The Slaver's Warning

The mask’s rasp resolves into words, dry and old. Ash stirs around the hollow as if the pit itself is breathing them out.

The Woodsman

The Woodsman

That voice. I have heard it in sealed places before.

The Black Stone Mask

The Black Stone Mask

Little fire, you ask what I am. I am a watch that failed, and a door that still remembers.

The Royal Courier

The Royal Courier

A door to what? Say it plainly.

The Black Stone Mask

The Black Stone Mask

To those who hid children from the Grey Slavers. To those who buried names so they could be found again.

The ember-light at Embers’ feet brightens, and a thin line of etched stone appears in the ash, leading away from the hollow like a hidden threshold.

The Woodsman

The Woodsman

There. A refuge mark. Old, but true. If she follows the line, it answers to shelter, not snares.

The Royal Courier

The Royal Courier

Then the path is real. Embers, if you trust it, I will walk with you.

Are there others like you?

SUCCESS (Great Reasoning, rolled +1)

The Slaver's Warning

The hush below the ash holds. The mask’s glow stays steady, like a coal banked under stone.

Embers Firestarter

Embers Firestarter

Are there others like you?

The Black Stone Mask

The Black Stone Mask

Yes. Few, and scattered. Some watch roads. Some guard doors. Some forget what they guard until a name wakes them.

The Woodsman

The Woodsman

Then the old refuges still breathe, even now.

The Royal Courier

The Royal Courier

You mean there are hidden shelters across the old kingdoms? Places the slavers missed?

The Black Stone Mask

The Black Stone Mask

Missed, no. Covered. Buried under ash, under laws, under fear. But not gone.

The etched line in the ash lengthens by a finger’s width, then settles, pointing past the dead stone ridge.

The Woodsman

The Woodsman

I have walked toward such marks before and found warm roofs, hidden wells, and people who still keep bread for strangers. If this path leads there, we do not waste it.

The Royal Courier

The Royal Courier

Then let us see it with open eyes. Embers, if you wish, I will not hurry you.
