The Key to the Past

The Woodsman finishes prying the stone free, and the hollow behind it breathes out dust and old secrecy. Inside lie a weathered map and a rusted iron key, waiting like a confession.

That mark... I know it. This was a hiding place for children, for people hunted by the Grey Slavers.

She lifts the key with care. The sigil on its handle matches the resistance sign seen in the refuge, and something in the chamber clicks into place, like a memory waking.

Your father may have walked these places. Or someone close to him did. This key was meant to keep a door closed, or open it for the right hand.

The map is old, but one route is fresh in the mind now, a red door marked in faded ink near the edge of the lost path. Grayman's shadow feels suddenly tied to that line, and to the past he keeps circling.
