The Compromised Refuge

The glowing ash line leads Embers up the ridge, then breaks at the crest. Below, a stone wall lies half-buried in gray dust, its gate broken but standing. The Black Stone Mask's hush seems to point right at it. This is a real place, a possible home, if it can be reached and made safe.

The Woodsman

There. A holdfast, maybe older than the roads. If the path is true, it ends there.

And if Grayman saw the trail, he will come for it too. We should move fast.

The wall is older than the ash.

At the base of the ridge, fresh marks cut through the powder, not old ruin marks. A boot scrape. A dragged heel. Someone has been here recently, close to the refuge path.

The Woodsman

The Woodsman

Not empty. Stay behind me, Embers.

Near the broken gate, a dark scrap of cloth hangs on a nail, and the breeze turns it just enough to show a smear of gray. The route to shelter and the shadow of Grayman meet at the same threshold.

SUCCESS (Legendary Willpower, rolled -1)

The Compromised Refuge

Embers steps past the broken gate without slowing. Her hand stays on the sling, her other on the knife, and the refuge accepts her with a hollow hush.

Gray dust shifts under her boots, but the floor inside is packed hard by old feet. The wall around her feels thick enough to keep the wind out.

The Woodsman

Easy now. Let me look high and low before we call it safe.

The mark is here, and so are fresh tracks. Someone has been using this place.

Embers reaches the threshold first anyway, and the little shadow of the broken gate falls behind her like a door half shut.

If she holds her ground here, we can make this place ours.

Inside the refuge, a cold stone chamber opens around her, with a narrow stair cut into one side and old ash gathered in the corners. It is not empty, but it is real. The Courier turns toward the dark passage, waiting for Embers to decide the next move.
