The hollow glows gold around the fire, and the cooked rabbit rests between them on a flat stone. The Woodsman speaks in an easy, measured murmur, as if he is telling a tale he has carried for years. Embers sits near the warmth, small hands tucked close, listening.

The Woodsman
Before the split, the forests did not feel endless. They were joined, like one great cloak across the world. A road could run for days without losing sight of open sky.

The Royal Courier
And then the Cataclysm broke it all apart.

The Woodsman
Aye. Hills rose where none had been, seas swallowed low places, and the woods closed over old stones. Folk who knew the old ways had to learn them again, or be lost.

Embers Firestarter
The fire is warm. His voice makes the dark woods feel farther away.

The Royal Courier
I crossed maps that lied to me, and paths that vanished by morning. It is strange, hearing the world named as if it still remembers itself.

The Woodsman
It does remember. In roots, in tracks, in old warnings. That is why I speak to the land when I can. It listens better than most people.
For a moment, the hollow settles into shared quiet, the three of them wrapped in smoke, dusk, and the soft crackle of embers.
“Thinking back onto the man that has stalked her embers recalls a fragment of a memory of the lady of the Woods at the moment they had danced in the Moonlight together she had called her mother”
SUCCESS (Great Reasoning, rolled +0)

The fire pops softly. Embers stares into the coals, and an old picture rises in her mind, bright as moonlit water.

Embers Firestarter
The lady of the Woods. She called herself my mother.
The memory settles into place, not a dream, but a true fragment, a hand in hers, pale light, and a word spoken with care.

The Woodsman
You have that look again, little ember. Something found you.

The Royal Courier
A memory, then. A hard one, or a good one?
Embers keeps still, but the firelight catches her face as if the answer matters to the whole hollow.

The Woodsman
If you want, child, you can say who she was to you. No rush. The night is not going anywhere.
“I think she says hesitantly, I think she was my mom but I really don't remember much just the smell of Jasmine and dancing in the moonlight”
SUCCESS (Superb Willpower, rolled -1)
The fire crackles on. Embers lifts her chin, words coming small and careful.

Embers Firestarter
I think she was my mom... I do not remember much. Just jasmine, and dancing in moonlight.
The woods seem to hush around the little hollow. The Royal Courier leans in, her earlier relief softening into something tender.

The Royal Courier
That is enough to know she loved you, little one. Smell and song stay when names go thin.

The Woodsman
Jasmine, eh? A gentle scent for a hard memory. She must have wanted the night to feel safe for you.
Embers' fingers loosen near her chest. The fire paints gold along her knees while the rabbit steams on the stone.

The Royal Courier
If you want, you can tell us what you remember next. We will listen.
“It's hard to remember it's all fragments but there was the promise. Though what the promise was Amber's can't remember just that there was a promise”
SUCCESS (Superb Willpower, rolled +0)
The memory catches, thin as thread, but it holds. Embers’ breath steadies as the shape of a promise surfaces with it.

Embers Firestarter
A promise. I remember a promise.
Images drift in pieces, a hand at her height, jasmine in the dark, and a voice speaking low enough that only she could hear.

Embers Firestarter
Not the words. Just the feeling of being told to wait.

The Royal Courier
That matters, little one. Sometimes the shape comes back before the sentence does.

The Woodsman
A promise leaves tracks. Even in a fogged mind, it leaves tracks.
Embers' fingers curl, then loosen. The firelight warms her knuckles, and something in her face shifts, as if a hidden knot gives way.

The Royal Courier
Was it someone asking you to come, or someone asking you to stay?
“To stay I think. She says Softly, to stay and wait for the one who will come. Who will come to fix things i think”
FAILURE (Great Reasoning, rolled -2)
The fire pops softly. Embers’ words hang in the warm air, small and brave.

The Royal Courier
Then we wait with you. If someone is meant to come, they will find this light.

The Woodsman
Aye. Waiting is a kind of watch, and watchfulness has kept better folk alive than haste ever did.
The courier’s shoulders ease. She glances toward the dark trees, then back to Embers with a gentler smile.

The Royal Courier
Do you remember anything else about that promise? A place, a voice, even a smell?

The Woodsman
Jasmine, if I heard right. That is no forest flower I know. Could be a sign, or a memory trying on a name.
The night settles around them, but it does not feel empty. For once, the silence seems to make room.
“Finally feeling somewhat safe and full of roasted rabbit the crackle and snap of the fire and the Russell of the wind through the grass are like a lullaby to Embers. She drifts off to sleep but before she does she utters one last statement. The one who will come will save me I am to wait for him”
SUCCESS (Superb Willpower, rolled +0)

The rabbit is gone in the quiet way of full bellies. Embers sinks lower by the fire, her eyelids heavy as soot.

Embers Firestarter
The one who will come will save me. I am to wait for him.

The Royal Courier
Her gaze softens, and she does not answer at once.

The Woodsman
Then we keep the watch for you, little ember. If a promise is true, it can weather a night.
The courier eases closer on the grass and lays a blanket within Embers’ reach, careful and quiet.

The Royal Courier
Sleep, Embers. If he comes, we will see him first.
Firelight warms her face as the wind combs the hollow. The forest keeps its distance, and the fire keeps its song.
“The night passes as all nights do. Ember's finds herself awake with the dawn. Feeling refreshed and more sure of herself then she has as long as she can remember. She looks to The Courier and to the Woodman and says now what do we do”
FAILURE (Great Reasoning, rolled -2)

Dawn seeps gray through the hollow. Embers wakes on the blanket, clearer in the head than she has felt in days.

Embers Firestarter
Now what do we do?
The Royal Courier turns at once, relief flickering across her face. Then her eyes narrow toward the trees beyond the fire.

The Royal Courier
We leave before the hunter finds our tracks again. But first, we check the path and see if he has been near.

The Woodsman
Aye. And if Gray has not passed already, he will be reading the ground for us by now.
The Woodsman crouches by the ash, touching a broken fern stem near the edge of the hollow. Fresh mud clings to it.

The Woodsman
He was here after the rain. Not long ago.
The courier reaches for her sword, then stops, listening hard to the hush in the timber.
“Amber's takes a moment to steal her breathing focusing all of her power of sense on her hearing her vision her smell she tastes the air she feels for vibrations on the ground seeking the possible threat”
SUCCESS (Legendary Perception, rolled +1)

Embers steadies her breathing and lets the hollow speak first. The hush is not empty. It carries a drag of cloth, a soft brush on bark, and the faint metallic tick of gear shifted by a careful hand.

Embers Firestarter
Someone is moving west of the hollow.
She tastes damp moss, old ash, and a sharp thread of hunters' oil on the air. Fresh weight presses the ground beyond the fern line, then eases away, as if someone pauses to listen back.
A second pattern answers it, lighter, faster, crossing the first at an angle. It is not Gray's stride alone. Another set of feet has moved through the trees with him, and one of them is circling.

The Woodsman
You heard it too, didn't you? He is not hunting blind today.

The Royal Courier
Then we do not wait in the open. Embers, can you tell which way the circle bends?
Under the leaf litter, a final faint tremor reaches her feet, then stops cold, as if the watcher has just noticed her notice them.
“He's moving West she says in a whisper”
SUCCESS (Legendary Perception, rolled +3)

Embers Firestarter
He is moving west.
The Woodsman rises in one smooth motion and points into the dim trunks. The Royal Courier shifts her footing, already turning Embers toward the thicker brush.

The Woodsman
Good. Then we take the south bend and let his eyes run into emptiness.

The Royal Courier
Quietly, now. If he has a circle, we break it.
Embers slips from the blanket edge and threads between roots, following the faintest gap in the fern wall. The air ahead smells of wet bark and trampled moss, and a shadowed figure is gone from the west line by the time the others look.
A split second later, a pale scrap of cloth catches on a thorn behind them, fluttering once in the dawn. Whatever moved there has already traded places with the trees.

The Woodsman
There. He marks the path as he goes. Embers, keep your eyes low.
“Using the techniques that the Woodman is teaching her and following the instructions he gives Embers and her party will move South with a quickness taking care to leave as little sign of their passing as possible”
SUCCESS (Superb Stealth, rolled +0)

Embers slips low through the fern shadow, and the others follow her lead without a word. The hollow behind them stays untouched, except for a few bent stems and a hush where their feet have been.
The Woodsman ghosts ahead, bending branches back into place. The Royal Courier lifts her hem and steps where the moss is thickest, never once breaking the line of leaves.

Embers Firestarter
The ground keeps the prints soft. We are moving south.
Behind them, the scrap of cloth flickers once in the dawn, then vanishes between trunk and thorn as the brush swallows the hollow from view.

The Woodsman
Good. Keep that pace, little one. Let the forest think no one passed.

The Royal Courier
And if Gray follows, he finds only bent grass and empty air.
They thread south into the Sea of Green, single file, light-footed and nearly silent. The hollow falls behind them whole, with no fresh trail left to read.
“I ask the Woodsman how to hide our trail better”
FAILURE (Fair Survival, rolled +0)

Embers Firestarter
How do we hide our trail better?

The Woodsman
You do not hide every mark, little one. You teach the forest to keep the rest.

The Royal Courier
He means leaves, mud, broken stems, all of it. A careless path shouts.

The Woodsman
A stream helps. Stones help more. But the best trick is to look like wind passed, not feet.

The Royal Courier
He always speaks as if the trees are listening. Today, I think they are.

The Woodsman
See here, brush the fern forward after you step, not behind you. Let it fall back slow.

The Royal Courier
And if Gray is clever, he will search the obvious south line first. So we give him old sign, not ours.

The Woodsman
If you want, I can show you how to read a trail by eye alone, before the sun rises higher.
“I watch the Woodsman read the trail”
SUCCESS (Legendary Perception, rolled +0)

The Woodsman crouches lower and slides two fingers over the soil. He stops, tilts his head, then points at a line no wider than a needle.

The Woodsman
There. Gray steps heavy on the left, then feints right. A watcher copies him.
He brushes aside a veil of moss, revealing a bootprint half-filled with dew, then a second mark set farther apart, as if someone hurried to keep up.

The Royal Courier
So he is not alone. Good. That means he can be fooled.

Embers Firestarter
The trail bends where the fern is crushed, then skips over stone. She can see the lie in it.
The Woodsman gives a quick, grim nod and lifts his hand toward a narrow stream glinting through the roots. The old track vanishes into its bank and reappears downstream, broken by water and reeds.

The Woodsman
We cross there, and let the current speak for us. Embers, can you follow the false sign if I make one?
“If we know that he tracks herself why do we not turn in a different direction what lies to the South that we would go this way she thinks to herself but continues to follow The Woodsman as they hurry along. As they move Ember's will attempt to find out what she can about the second set of footprints using what was talked to her by the Woodman”
SUCCESS (Legendary Perception, rolled -2)

The Woodsman rises in one smooth motion and starts downstream, making his steps loud on purpose. He snaps a twig, then hunches and circles back, leaving a crooked path in the mud.

Embers Firestarter
The second set is lighter. It keeps pace, but only where the ground hides sound.
Embers slips after him, reading the marks as they appear. The watcher’s trail wavers at the stream bank, then commits to the reeds, where water blurs the edges.

The Royal Courier
Good. He follows the wrong man if he follows that.
The Woodsman flicks fresh leaves across his own prints, then points to a split in the roots where the current bites hard. The false track there is easy to make, and easy to lose.

Embers Firestarter
South holds old water and softer ground. It would hide more than the north path would.
Embers catches the tiny differences at once, the heavier boot, the lighter follow-up, the hesitation where the watcher copies Gray instead of leading. She knows which marks belong to the hunter and which belong to the shadow behind him.

The Woodsman
Then we use the stream, and you tell us where the lie breaks. If Gray wants a chase, let him chase the wrong sign.
“It is known that water is the source of life cities are found on rivers villages are found on streams perhaps it is time she thinks to herself she once again be among my own kind to be among people but the thought scares her. Everywhere she has gone she has been Hunted either by the gray men or by others who would use her for their own purpose and then discard her like a used napkin”
SUCCESS (Superb Willpower, rolled +2)

The stream hushes around Embers as she lets the others talk past her fear. The water keeps moving, bright and ordinary, while the false trail holds the eye of anyone foolish enough to trust it.

Embers Firestarter
Water carries people. It makes roads where there are none.

The Royal Courier
Rivers feed towns, yes. People gather where the land is kind enough to share.

The Woodsman
And where it is not, they build anyway. That is the trick of your kind.
He says it gently, not as a mockery. The Courier glances toward Embers, then back to the water, giving her the space to decide if the thought stays hidden or not.

The Royal Courier
If you ever want walls and a roof, I know a few places that still welcome children at the gate.
The Woodsman crouches by the bank and lifts a hand, palm up, as if offering the stream itself a question. The false prints and the living current meet there, and for a breath the world feels almost settled.
“Embers will attempt to read the answer from the river that the Woodman has proposed to it”
SUCCESS (Legendary Perception, rolled -1)

The stream shivers, then stills under Embers' gaze. In the reflected bright, the false trail splits into three wavering paths, like a hand choosing between doors.

Embers Firestarter
One path is loud. One is shallow. One bends where the current remembers the bank.
The water answers by pulling leaves into the right-hand bend, quick and certain. Under them, a darker line shows where a boot once crossed and the mud kept the shape.

The Woodsman
Good eye. That is the one he would trust less.

The Royal Courier
Then it is no trail at all, only a lie with teeth.
Embers spots one more thing in the current, a strip of gray wool snagged beneath a stone, turning slowly like a trapped fish. The cloth points downstream, away from the hollow.

The Woodsman
He passed here in haste, and then turned aside. That means he has lost certainty.

The Royal Courier
Say the word, Embers. We can move before he learns the trick.
“Follow the leaves”
SUCCESS (Legendary Perception, rolled +1)

Embers lifts her gaze from the water and follows the leaves with uncanny certainty. The right-hand bend is the answer, and the false trail there is clean enough to fool a hunter hurrying blind.
The Woodsman gives a low nod and steps back from the bank, already reading the shallows beyond the bend. The Royal Courier shifts her weight, sword hand loosening as she sees Embers has found the lie.
A wet smear of boot leather appears where the current curls under the roots, then vanishes under a drift of leaves. Whatever crossed here last, it chooses the wrong side of the stream.

The Woodsman
Good. He will trust the water there, and curse it later.

The Royal Courier
Then we leave him that curse and move while he is counting his own footsteps.
Embers follows the bend, and the path opens without protest. The stream noise thins behind them, replaced by fern, root, and the hush of deeper green.

The Royal Courier
If Gray comes this way, he finds only our shadow. Which way do we take next?
“Using the techniques that the Woodman has taught her Embers takes a lay of the land deciding almost impulsively that today she will leave the forest behind and begin a new life beyond the green sea often the distance she sees the dragon tooth mountains and points stating in a calm resolute voice that way”
SUCCESS (Good Agility, rolled +2)
