The overgrown copse leans over a muddy deer track in the Northwoods, rain-damp leaves trembling under a gray sky. Embers Firestarter crouches low beside a root, small and still, her bright eyes fixed ahead.
A royal courier pushes through the brush in a mud-spattered cloak, one hand tight on a leather satchel. She keeps glancing back, breath quick, boots slipping on wet moss.
Behind her, a single wolf ghosts from fern to fern, ribs sharp under a thin coat, yellow eyes locked on the courier. It is hungry, and patient.

The Royal Courier
Easy, easy... not here, not now.
The courier hears a sound in the brush and whips around, raising the satchel like it could ward off teeth. Her gaze catches Embers in the shadows, and fear flashes across her face.

The Royal Courier
You there, little one, can you see it? If you can move without noise, do it now.
The wolf lowers its head and steps into the track, drawn by hunger and the scent of easy prey. The courier edges back toward the nearest tree, trapped between bark and fangs as the beast closes the distance.

Escape the wolf
“Picking up a small stone embers flings it at the wolf then bellows at the wolf making herself as large as possible”
FAILURE (Mediocre Ranged Combat, rolled +0)

Embers snaps up a pebble and hurls it, but the stone skitters wide and vanishes into wet leaves.
She throws her arms out and tries to loom larger. Her thin shout echoes through the copse, sharp and shaky.

The Wolf
Not prey alone.
The wolf checks its rush, ears pricking. Its nose lifts, reading the air, and its path bends away from Embers for a heartbeat.

The Royal Courier
Keep it looking at me, please, child, just a little longer!
The courier jerks her satchel up and slaps her free hand against the trunk behind her, trying to climb out of reach. Mud splashes her hem.
The wolf answers with a low, hungry growl and starts circling, choosing the easier gap between tree and girl.
“Screaming in panic, bolt up a nearby acorn tree.”
FAILURE (Fair Athletics, rolled +0)

Embers lunges for the nearest trunk, but her boots skid on wet roots. The bark flashes past her hands and she slams shoulder-first into the copse floor.
The wolf cuts across the opening she meant to use, placing itself between her and the tree. Its ears tilt forward, sharp and sure.

The Royal Courier
No, no, don’t run, keep it on me!
Up the trunk, the courier freezes halfway, one boot slipping. She hugs the bark tighter, eyes wide on Embers and the circling beast.

The Wolf
Too many paths. Pick the weakest.
It lowers its head and shifts toward the courier again, forcing the girl higher and narrowing Embers’s space to a strip of mud and roots.
A thin branch snaps overhead and drops needles into Embers’s hair. The wolf does not charge yet, but it holds the line, waiting for someone to move first.
“Pull out knife, keep it between wolf and self, slowly back away”
SUCCESS (Good Agility, rolled +1)

Embers gets the knife free and slides it up between her body and the wolf’s reach, inching backward over the wet roots.
The blade catches a pale lick of light. The wolf checks its rush, nose twitching at the sharp scent of iron and human sweat.

The Wolf
Small prey, bright metal. Watch the hands.
Embers keeps moving, low and careful, and the open strip of mud gives way behind her. The wolf does not cross that line.

The Royal Courier
That’s it, hold it there! It hates the blade!
Up the trunk, the courier finds a foothold and freezes less, one hand clutching the bark, eyes darting between wolf and knife.
The wolf tilts its head, then edges one step sideways, reevaluating the pair of them as the copse falls strangely still.
“Feeling slightly more in control but still very scared, embers will yell, "go away" her voice horse from the screams and lack of use.”
SUCCESS (Fair Willpower, rolled +2)

Embers Firestarter
Go away.
The words come out ragged, but they land. The wolf flinches back a pace, ears angling away from the knife as if the sound itself has teeth.

The Royal Courier
By the Bright Court... you scared it.
The courier loosens one hand from the trunk and peeks down, face pale but no longer frozen with panic. Her satchel bumps softly against the bark.

The Wolf
Sharp voice. Sharp smell. Not worth a broken mouth.
It gives Embers one long, measuring look, then turns its head toward the deeper brush, weighing the cost of staying.

The Royal Courier
If you mean that, keep it there a little longer. I can get down if it leaves.
The wolf backs into the needles, still watching, while the courier swallows hard and looks to Embers instead of the ground.
“Look around for another stone to load into her sling then fling it at the wolf's nose”
SUCCESS (Mediocre Ranged Combat, rolled +0)

Embers flicks her gaze over the mud and finds another stone by the roots. She loads it into her sling with a quick, practiced motion.
The wolf starts to turn back, but Embers snaps the sling in a tight arc.
The stone smacks the wolf across the nose. It jerks hard, sneezing and stumbling sideways into the ferns.

The Wolf
Too close. Bad mouth. Leave this place.
The courier inhales sharply, then slides one boot down the trunk, trusting the opening Embers made.

The Royal Courier
It’s moving off. Keep it away from me for one more breath.
The wolf backs deeper into the needles, head low and blinking, while Embers still has the sling in hand.
“Stare at the Courier with fear and slowly back away from her treating her just as dangerous as the wolf”
SUCCESS (Fair Willpower, rolled +0)

Embers lowers the sling and takes a small step back, keeping her eyes on the courier as if the woman might lunge just as fast as the wolf.

The Royal Courier
Easy. I am not after you.
The courier pauses on the trunk, one boot searching for bark below, then she forces her hands to stay open and visible.

The Royal Courier
You came when I called. I will remember that.
Below them, the wolf keeps retreating into the needles, its head turned away, while the ferns shiver around its passing.

The Royal Courier
A child with a sling. A knife. And enough courage to stand there anyway.
The courier slides one more hand down the trunk and looks toward Embers, no longer pressed for space, only waiting.
