The hollow narrows around Dax and his companions. Behind them, the root seam is half-shut, and moonlight thins to a silver thread at the entrance. Then the key in Dax’s pack gives a low, rhythmic hum.

The hum deepens into a steady, mechanical note. The key’s glow stops pulsing and becomes a narrow beam, cutting through damp blackness and striking ancient glyphs set into the tunnel wall.

The markings are not carved stone. They are metal, old and green with age, sunk into the root-choked walls like the bones of a lost city. The beam lingers on them as if it knows the way.

By the old woods, I was right. It is not a lure. It is a guide.

Then the vault and the forest were only doors. This key seeks what lies beyond them.

The beam slides onward, touching more glyphs, each one answering with a faint glimmer deeper in the dark. The tunnel ahead is waking, one buried mark at a time.

Keep close. Whatever made this path meant it to be found.

Learn what lies beyond the hidden glyph path

I reach out to touch the green metal glyphs to see if they react to my presence.

Dax reaches out and lays his fingers on the green metal glyph. The cold surface answers at once, a faint tremor running through the wall under his touch.

A thin line of light wakes inside the mark, then spills into the next glyph, and the next. The shapes do not resist him, they recognize the key’s pull.

Hearn

That is no lock, it is a command.

The Exiled Prince

The Exiled Prince

A command for what?

The beam in Dax’s pack shudders against the wall, and a buried pattern begins to show, a route cut through the tunnel like an old order waiting to be obeyed.

Robin Hood

Robin Hood

Forward, then. The path is answering him.

The glyph flares bright enough to sting Dax’s hand, and a dusting of green rust crumbles onto his knuckles. Beneath the metal, a deeper seal clicks somewhere in the dark ahead.

Dax follows the glowing route without hesitation, sword and shield angling low as the tunnel bends beneath the root seam.

The green glyphs answer in order, each mark lighting as his steps reach it, until the passage ahead is outlined like a drawn blade.

Hearn

It is not leading us through a place. It is leading us through a choice.

The Exiled Prince

The Exiled Prince

Then the key is not merely opening a seal.

The old path widens into a round chamber, and the beam from Dax’s pack settles on a raised stone dais set with matching grooves.

Robin Hood

Robin Hood

That is a command seat. Something was meant to be called here.

A buried mechanism clicks again beneath the floor, deeper than before, as though the tunnel itself has accepted Dax’s passage and is waiting for the next instruction.

Dax kneels at the dais and runs a gloved hand along the grooves, feeling for hidden catches. The stone is worn smooth by repeated use, not worship.

The grooves answer the key’s beam. Thin green lines flare across the seat, mapping a pattern that matches the glyph path behind him.

Hearn

Hearn

A lock would not be built like this. This is a command pattern.

The Exiled Prince

The Exiled Prince

So it is not a seal at all. It is a control point.

The buried mechanism clicks hard beneath the floor, and the dais turns a fraction with a dry scrape. A narrow seam opens in the stone at its base.

Inside the seam, Dax sees not treasure, but a carved slate showing the path ahead, with one mark lit beyond the chamber, deeper under the roots.

Robin Hood

Then the key is meant to direct something, not merely guard it. Choose your next move carefully.

Dax lays his sapphire glow over the lit mark. The green lines on the slate answer at once, brightening to a steady, obedient shine.

The carved slab shivers under his hand. Stone grinds inside stone, and the seam widens with a clean, deliberate click.

Hearn

It is taking a command, not resisting one.

The Exiled Prince

The Exiled Prince

So the key opens more than locks. It gives orders.

The slate slides free enough to show a narrow channel beneath it, lined with the same green script, all of it pointing deeper under the roots.

Robin Hood

Then that is the path. Whatever waits below, it expects someone to use this.

The chamber holds still around them, but the opened seam breathes cold air from below, patient as an invitation.

Dax presses the key to the glowing mark. The green script drinks the light, then snaps awake across the slab in a clean lattice.

Stone answers with a deep click. The carved slate shifts aside, and the channel beneath it opens wide enough for a man to crawl.

Hearn

Hearn

It is open. Mind the current, the charm is pulling harder now.

The Exiled Prince

The Exiled Prince

So that is what it is, a control, not a mere lock.

The cold draft rises from below, carrying dust and wet earth. Dax's palm stings where the glyph took his weight, and the key's glow dims a shade.

Path or trap, it is waiting for us. Decide quickly, before the chamber starts listening.
