The colossal head rises higher from the black pool, its amber eye fixing on Dax. Behind him, Talimaryl stands bound beneath the chamber’s pale fire, while the sealed door denies the others above.

Vaelthar
Hunter, you opened my prison with a crown-mark. Tell me what oath you carry, and I will tell you what it is worth.
The ancient crowns embedded in the floor begin to whisper. Their metal mouths shape fragments of forgotten vows, and the black pool stretches toward Dax without spilling.

Talimaryl
Do not answer, Dax. Vaelthar cannot seize silence, but it can turn any spoken purpose into a binding.
The red-wrapped sword grows cold in Dax’s hand. Its fused black inscription dims, revealing three paths around the pool: a broken chain, a darkened crown, and a narrow white flame.

Vaelthar
Break the chain, and I starve. Extinguish the crown, and I sleep. Place your hand upon it, and I rise wearing your ancient oath.
Talimaryl’s chains tighten as the chamber waits. The three symbols brighten in turn, offering no answer, only consequence, while Vaelthar’s eye remains fixed on Dax.
“I remain silent and study the three paths. Merlin shouts into the chamber break the chain and cut off his head”
SUCCESS (Legendary Perception, rolled +2)

Dax
The broken chain feeds the pool. The darkened crown feeds Vaelthar. The white flame is the only path that consumes neither.
Dax remains silent, studying the three paths. Their meanings settle into clarity: the chain binds the Hunger, the crown would enthrone it, and the flame remembers the difference between prison and prisoner.

Merlin
Break the chain and cut off his head! Do not let the Hunger turn your silence into consent!
Merlin’s command rolls through the chamber from the sealed doorway. The broken chain flashes silver, and the white flame rises until it outlines Vaelthar’s true shape beneath the colossal head.

Talimaryl
There is the truth. The head is only a mask. Sever the binding, and the mask will fall with it.
The red-wrapped sword answers Dax’s silent understanding. Its black inscription tears free, crosses the pool, and cleaves the luminous chain. Vaelthar’s borrowed crown splits apart.
The First Hunger collapses into ash and cold water. The crowns embedded in the floor go dark, Talimaryl’s chains fall slack, and the sealed door opens to Merlin, Heilyn, Narbo, Robin Hood, and the others.
