Hearn plants his bone charm against the rune line and twists it hard. The green flare tightens at once, pulled into a thin, steady thread beneath the roots.

The hollow steadies. Then a side fissure splits wider, and a huge furred minotaur slips through it, stumbling into the channel with wild, white eyes.

It does not charge. It flinches from the key's pull, throws itself into the corner, and lowers its horned head like a cornered beast praying to vanish.

Robin Hood

Robin Hood

Hold. It is not hunting us.

Robin Hood keeps his arrow drawn, but the bow hand trembles a little. The Exiled Prince steps half a pace forward, staring at the creature as if pity has caught him by surprise.

The Exiled Prince

The Exiled Prince

It is scared.

Hearn glances from the cowering beast to Dax, then to the rune line, judging the thread of power with a strained, anxious focus. The passage holds, for now.

I sheath my sword and speak in a low, steady voice to soothe the beast.

Dax eases his sword back into its sheath and lets the steel vanish from sight. He lowers his shield too, turning it edge-on so the minotaur sees only a guarded silhouette, not a threat.

Dax

Dax

Easy. No sudden moves.

He speaks in a low voice, slow enough to soothe the air itself. The words are not a command, only an invitation to breathe.

The Exiled Prince

The Exiled Prince

It listens. Look at its ears, Dax. It is waiting for permission to stop shaking.

Hearn

Hearn

Good. Keep that tone. The charm is pulling at its fear, but your voice is reaching it.

The minotaur raises its head a fraction. One trembling hand leaves the wall and presses to its chest, as if checking that its heart still belongs to it. The green thread along the rune line steadies, and the chamber seems to exhale.

The Exiled Prince

The Exiled Prince

You came from the stone circle, did you not? Were you driven here by the same thing that woke the key?

The minotaur swallows hard, then gives a tiny, broken nod. As the answer lands, a strip of root overhead loosens and drops a carved sliver of old green stone into the dust, marked with the same command-signs as the channel.

Demand Hearn to explain his connection to the Archer in the moonlight

SUCCESS (Superb Willpower, rolled +1)

Dax

Dax

Hearn. Tell me what you are to the Archer in the Moonlight.

The question hangs in the hollow while the green thread keeps its thin, steady glow. Hearn stills with one hand on the bone charm, his breath catching as if the name itself has weight.

Hearn

Hearn

Not servant. Not kin. I knew its path once, and I failed to close it.

Hearn

Hearn

The charm was mine to watch the seam. The Archer answered when I could not.

The Exiled Prince

The Exiled Prince

So that is the truth of you. A watcher who lost his post.

Hearn lowers his gaze to the green stone sliver in the dust, then looks back up at Dax with naked, tired honesty. The minotaur keeps very still, listening as if the answer matters to it too.

Hearn

Hearn

If you want the rest, I will give it. The Moonlit Archer guards thresholds, but it also remembers debt. Mine is unfinished.

Dax tips his chin toward the sliver and gives Hearn a small, firm gesture to pick it up and keep talking. The green thread hums on, steady as breath.

Hearn

Hearn

Gladly. If it has fallen from the roots, it wants hands to know it.

Hearn crouches, gathers the carved stone from the dust, and turns it over in both palms. The sliver catches the glow and answers with a faint line of its own.

The Exiled Prince

The Exiled Prince

You speak of debts like a man counting scars. Begin at the first one.

Hearn

Hearn

At the first threshold I failed. The Archer marked the path, and I watched it open where it should have been shut. Since then, I have followed the wrong lights and called it duty.

The Minotaur

The Minotaur

That is why the woods chased me out. I saw the same light in the trees, and thought it was death.

Hearn lifts his eyes to the minotaur, then to Dax, and the hard edge in his face softens into shame and resolve. The sliver in his hand shows a worn green sigil, half-there and half-erased.

Hearn

Hearn

The rest is this, then. The Archer does not only guard a door. It remembers who is sent away, and who runs. I was the one who ran.

Dax

What did you run from?

Hearn stills with the stone sliver in both hands. The green thread keeps humming beneath the roots.

Hearn

Hearn

A threshold that opened wrong. I stayed when I should have shut it, and something on the other side learned my fear.

The Exiled Prince

The Exiled Prince

And so you sold your shame to the woods. Convenient.

Hearn

Hearn

No. I ran from the Archer's judgment, and from the faces of those I left listening in the dark.

The Minotaur

The Minotaur

I know that flight. The light in the trees drove me from the stone circle. I thought the woods were hunting me.

Hearn lowers his head, the sliver turning slowly between his palms. A shallow scrape shows at Dax's knuckles where the shield edge bites his grip.

Hearn

Hearn

If you want the rest, it is this, then. I came back to face what I abandoned. If the Archer still waits, I will stand where I fled.

I offer the minotaur the stone sliver

Dax eases the carved sliver out toward the minotaur, palm open, the green stone resting flat on his fingers. The rune line keeps humming low beneath the roots.

Dax

Dax

Take it.

The minotaur leans forward, nostrils flaring, then receives the sliver with both hands as if it might burn. Its shoulders loosen at once.

The Minotaur

The Minotaur

This is the same color as the light that drove me off. But it does not strike.

The Exiled Prince

The Exiled Prince

You hand relics to strangers now. Bold, for a man still standing in a hole.

Hearn watches the exchange, then turns the charm over near his chest, his face easing by degrees. The steady green thread throws pale light across all three of them.

Hearn

Hearn

Good. It remembers being held by someone who ran. That matters.

The Minotaur

The Minotaur

I ran too. When the woods shone, I fled the stone circle and did not look back.

The minotaur closes its fingers around the sliver and lifts it to the glow, no longer cowering. The Prince falls quiet, watching for the answer that follows.

A shape parts from the dark seam above them, and the hidden watcher finally names itself. The light catches green on his cheek as he steps into view, not a threat, but a witness.

Heilyn

Heilyn

That sliver is a memory shard. It marks a threshold, and it remembers who opened it.

Heilyn

Heilyn

Hold it near the line, and it will answer the seam. Leave it hungry, and it calls something worse.

Dax

Dax

It is a key-mark, not just a chip of stone.

The Minotaur

The Minotaur

So the light was not hunting me. It was calling me back to where I ran.

The Exiled Prince

The Exiled Prince

Then the object is proof, not treasure. That is a cleaner lie than most.

Heilyn lowers the shard toward the humming green thread, and the rune line brightens in answer, as if the roots themselves are listening.
