The path narrows under black boughs. Dax, Hearn, Robin Hood, and the Exiled Prince halt as armored steel glints ahead. A lone rider emerges from shadow, lance leveled, crest bright on his surcoat.

The Knight
Dax of the key. By the authority of King Arthur's castle, yield the relic now.
He does not glance at Hearn or Robin Hood. His horse stamps, but the lance stays fixed on Dax's pack, where the dimmed glow still throbs.

The Exiled Prince
He comes for the summons, not the blade. He knows what rides inside that thing.

Hearn
Aye. The crown wants it caged before it wakes the woods clean through.

Robin Hood
Then speak plain, rider. Take one step more and the path turns bloody.
The knight’s visor tilts a fraction. His lance dips, a formal warning sharpened into murder if Dax refuses. The key stirs in the pack, and the forest seems to hold its breath.

“We are going to put an end to the thing this key summons. Join us or run before you die”
SUCCESS (Great Willpower, rolled +2)

Dax
We end what this key wakes, or we run from it. Join us, or get clear before it kills you.
The words land hard in the cold. The knight holds steady for a breath, then his lance lowers a handspan, not in surrender, but in thought. Hearn’s charm gives a dull pulse at his throat, and Robin Hood eases one step back, letting the rider answer for himself.

The Knight
A clean threat. Rare honesty in these woods.

The Knight
If the key opens what I suspect, standing alone is folly.

The Exiled Prince
He hesitates. Good. Let him choose before the crown chooses for him.

Hearn
Listen to the man, rider. That summons is not a trophy. It is a door with teeth.

The Knight
Then I ride with you, for now. But if the key turns on us, I will be the first to put it down.
His horse sidles off the path’s center, making room. The lance comes upright at last, and the forest breathes again around the dim pulse buried in Dax’s pack.

“Robin lead us to the thing the key summons so we may defeat it once an for all”
SUCCESS (Great Willpower, rolled -2)

Robin Hood turns his horse and points with two fingers into the trees. Dax keeps pace at once, pack thudding against his back, while the knight falls in behind with lance held high and cautious.

Robin Hood
Keep close. The path narrows where the woods are listening.
Leaves drift through a pale seam of moonlight as the group slips off the main track. Hearn touches the bone charm at his throat, and the hidden key gives a faint answering pulse inside Dax's pack.

The Exiled Prince
Of course the forest makes a procession of this.
Ahead, the trees open around a ring of roots and old stone. A low shape waits there, half-seen in the dark, while fresh hoofprints cut through damp earth beside claw marks older than the path.

The Knight
There. Whatever this summons is, it has already marked the place.
Robin halts and raises a hand, stopping everyone at the edge of the clearing. The key presses hot against Dax's back through the pack, and somewhere beyond the roots a deep breath rolls through the woods.
✓ Quest Accepted
Defeat the thing the glowing key summons
Dax leaves the deeper woods behind and arrives at the place only Merlin can transport you.
“Suddenly King Arthur an Merlin appear. Arthur says you must go to the place only Merlin can transport you if you are going to aquire the weapons necessary to defeat this beast”
SUCCESS (Superb Agility, rolled +0)

Moonlight breaks across a ring of standing stones, and the air tastes of rain and old ash. Dax arrives in the circle with the others, and the key in his pack answers with a hard, bright pulse.
At the center waits Merlin, robed and still, one hand resting on a carved staff. Beside him stands King Arthur, armored and grave, as if they have been here all along.

King Arthur
If you mean to arm yourself for that beast, you come to the place only Merlin can send you.

Merlin
And if the key has chosen you, then it will not wait kindly.
The stones hum once. Hearn lifts his charm in reflex, and Robin Hood eases his bow down, watching the ring with narrowed eyes.

Dax
The circle is already awake.
Merlin turns his staff and a seam of pale light opens between two stones, shaped like a door with no wood in it. Cold wind spills through, carrying the scent of iron and distant thunder.

King Arthur
Step through, and choose quickly. The woods will not hold still forever.
“Robin, hearn, the knight, an the prince step throught the door. Before I enter i ask Arthur an Merlin if they will be joining the fight”
SUCCESS (Good Reasoning, rolled -2)

Dax
Arthur, Merlin, will you stand with us in the fight?

King Arthur
I will not hide behind a doorway while the thing comes loose in my woods.

Merlin
I open the way. Arthur keeps the path. That is my part.
Arthur’s jaw tightens, but he gives a single nod. Merlin’s staff glows faintly at the tip, and the pale doorway holds steady between the stones.

King Arthur
If you enter, then enter as one company. No one is left to bargain alone.

Merlin
And if the key must be surrendered, you will hear that from me before you hear it from the dark.
The prince shifts behind Dax with a sharp breath, while Robin Hood watches Arthur like a man measuring a blade. Hearn’s charm gives off a dull, answering thrum beside the key’s pulse.
“We all enter”
SUCCESS (Superb Agility, rolled +3)

Dax steps forward, and the whole company moves with him. Arthur turns with a soldier’s instinct, Merlin keeps the doorway braced with one hand and his staff with the other, and the pale light washes over their boots as they cross the threshold together.

King Arthur
Good. A king’s road is no road at all if his people are left behind.

Merlin
The key stirs less when it is not treated like prey. That is useful knowledge.
Hearn’s charm gives a soft, answering pulse. In Dax’s pack, the glowing key dims, then steadies, as if it recognizes the company around it. The portal does not flare or lash out, it simply holds.

The Exiled Prince
Hmph. I dislike being herded by prophecy, but this is better than being split up.

Robin Hood
A fair trade. We keep together, and no one bargains with the dark alone.
The light beyond the stones deepens into a corridor of moon-pale mist. For an instant, a shadow with the broad shape of antlers seems to stand far off in the glow, then it is gone, leaving only the hush of the waiting passage.
“Everyone finds diamond level armor an weapons suited just for them my armor turns deep sapphire as I pick up an enchanted golden sword with a diamond hilt”
SUCCESS (Good Reasoning, rolled +1)

The corridor answers Dax’s reach with old magic. Stone niches along both walls glow from within, and plates of diamond-bright armor rest where bare rock should be. Weapons hang beside them, each one fitted to a hand that has not yet touched it.

Dax
The armor is meant for all of them.
Dax claims the first set. Sapphire light runs over his cuirass as it settles onto him, and the transformed plates lock with a soft, exact click. In his hand, a golden sword with a diamond hilt takes the place of the one he bore before.

Merlin
A chamber that prepares its guests. How considerate.
Hearn lifts the bone charm, and the racks answer again. A hunter’s mail and bow appear where the charm points, while Robin Hood gets a fitted helm, a green-banded blade, and a shield set with moon-white trim.

The Exiled Prince
So the corridor judges worth, not title. That is at least a relief.
Arthur receives armor fit for a king at war, and the corridor’s pale light tightens around the group like a held breath. Far ahead, the moon-mist stirs, and the hidden shape beyond it seems to notice the new clink of metal.

“I ask Arthur if he knows the beast”
SUCCESS (Good Reasoning, rolled +1)

Dax
Arthur, do you know this beast?

King Arthur
I do. I have hunted its shadow in more than one age, and the key has brought us to its door.

Merlin
Then we are not blind. Good. Naming a thing often weakens its grip on the night.

King Arthur
It is no common monster. It is a keeper of thresholds, and it has learned to feed on those who break seals they do not understand.

Hearn
That is why the woods answer badly to it. This key is not a prize, Dax, it is a summons with teeth.

The Exiled Prince
Then let the crown say plainly what it means to do. I have no taste for riddles when steel is already in hand.

King Arthur
We face it together. Keep the key close, and when the threshold opens, strike at what emerges.
“Everyone is suited in their new armor admiring each other an checking out their new weapons before pushing forward”
SUCCESS (Good Reasoning, rolled -2)

The company inspects the gifts in the moon-mist. Dax tests the balance of the new sword, the Exiled Prince lifts a fresh helm, and Robin Hood turns a bracer in his hands with a low whistle.

Robin Hood
Fine work. This steel drinks the light like it was made for this road.

Hearn
The charm is quiet now, but the key still answers the seam.
Merlin lowers his staff and the corridor-niches dim, their glow settling into a steady watch. King Arthur tightens his gauntlet straps, already facing the seam as if it were an old enemy.

The Exiled Prince
If the crown means to take that key, it will have to do better than posture.
Dax finishes the inspection, and the group is ready to move, but the key pulses once in his grasp and the seam gives way with a thin hiss. Cold air spills through, carrying the stink of wet leaves and old stone.

King Arthur
There. The threshold opens. Keep formation, and keep the key visible.
Dax leaves the portal corridor behind and arrives at the stones in the wood.
“Travel back to the stones in the wood to find the creature that left the claw marks”
SUCCESS (Superb Agility, rolled -2)

The stones in the wood rise out of black moss and wet roots, their old faces slick with moon dew. Dax arrives under the broken ring, the key a hard pulse against his pack as the air turns cold and clean.
Claw marks rake one standing stone, fresh enough to darken the lichen. Nearby, the earth is churned where something heavy turned in anger.
Robin Hood crouches by the scars, one hand flat to the stone. Hearn stands a few paces off, bone charm lifted, listening. The Exiled Prince watches the trees with his jaw set.

Robin Hood
These cuts are recent. Whatever made them came back here after the first sign of the key.

Hearn
And it still circles close. The charm feels it, just beyond the ring.
Dax scans the dark between the trunks. A low breath answers from the brush, and something broad shifts out of sight near the stones.

The Exiled Prince
There. Decide quickly, or the woods decide for us.

SUCCESS (Superb Melee Weapons, rolled +0)

Dax moves first. His sword flashes into the brush, and the hidden shape jerks back with a snarl that shakes leaves from the lower branches.
Something large and furred bursts clear of the undergrowth, a wild-eyed beast with bark stuck in its coat. It recoils from the blade, then wheeling feet carry it away from the ring.

Robin Hood
There, it breaks. Keep pressure on it, Dax.

Hearn
Careful. That was not its only reason for circling here.
The Exiled Prince steps in, then stops short as the key in Dax's pack gives a sharp pulse. The forest answers with a low hush, as if something deeper has taken notice.

Dax
The brush is clear, but the key is waking something else.

The Exiled Prince
Good. It fled. Now decide whether you keep the key, or hand it over before the crown comes looking.
