The woods give way to a reeking mire. Grey-black sludge bubbles between warped roots, and pale moss floats on the surface like dead skin. Dax steps onto a narrow rise of firmer ground as the trail to King Arthur's castle cuts straight through the swamp.
Robin Hood moves first, light-footed on the moss patches. The Exiled Prince lags a pace behind, watching each swallow of mud with open distrust. Heilyn scans the twisted trees, while the Minotaur snorts at the stink and keeps close to the safer stones.
A guttural roar rolls across the wetlands. Somewhere beyond the hanging reeds, something large shifts in the fog.

The Exiled Prince
This path is madness. Tell me you see another way, or at least tell me why we are still walking into it.

Robin Hood
Because the castle lies ahead, and the mire is quieter than the thing making that noise. Stay on the moss, and do not stray.

Heilyn
The sludge is disturbed from below. Something is moving under the surface, not just around it.
“The beast comes up from below.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Agility, rolled -1)

The water heaves under the muck, then splits with a wet lunge. A ridged back breaks the surface beside Dax's rise, and black sludge sheets off hooked spines.

Dax
Too close.
Dax meets the surge with shield and steel, driving the first rush aside. The creature's forelimb skids across the firmer ground, denied purchase.

The Minotaur
Behind you, Dax!
Robin Hood shifts his aim toward the churning waterline, while the Exiled Prince stumbles back from the splash and curses the swamp. Heilyn's eyes lock on the ripples spreading fast through the reeds.

Heilyn
There is more than one under there.
The beast recoils from Dax's block, and the channel goes tense with movement beneath the surface. The path ahead is still open, but the swamp has chosen its answer.

Survive the swamp beasts
“Everyone stand your ground”
SUCCESS (Superb Willpower, rolled +1)

Dax
Hold your ground. Do not break.
Dax's order cuts through the swamp, firm enough to steady the air around him. The Minotaur stops edging backward. Robin Hood squares his stance. Heilyn lifts his chin from the reeds.

Robin Hood
You heard him. Aim low and wait for the next move.

Heilyn
The water is full of them. Keep the line tight.

The Exiled Prince
If this mire means to test us, then let it learn we are not easy prey.
The surface around the rise swells in answer, but the company holds. The ripples stall against their stillness, and the first rush of beasts hesitates beneath the black water.
For one hard beat, the swamp gives ground, and the narrow path toward the castle remains open.
“I see an opening, go for the attack. The beasts blood turns the swamp to gold. We all look at each other what is this?”
SUCCESS (Superb Melee Weapons, rolled -1)

Dax steps into the opening and the swamp beast surges up into his reach. His sword takes it cleanly, and the thing splits the water with a choking splash.
Dark blood spills over the reeds, brightens, and hardens into veins of gold across the muck. The black water flashes under it like a buried treasure bed.

Robin Hood
By the green hells... it is turning the mire.

Heilyn
No, look closer. The swamp is answering it.

The Exiled Prince
Gold, here? After all this? What trick is this?
The Minotaur stares at the glittering slick in horror, tightening his grip on the green stone sliver as the nearest ripples tremble away from the new shine.
For a breath, the whole group just looks from Dax to the gilded water, and the path ahead feels changed, as if the swamp has shown its true face.

“The key is glowing blindingly bright an pulling towards the biggest willow tree the the swamp”
SUCCESS (Great Perception, rolled +1)

The key’s glow swells in Dax’s pack, then tugs hard to the right. He turns with it, and the whole company follows his line of sight.
Through the fog, the biggest willow in the mire leans over the water like a hooded giant. Its roots vanish into the gold-veined sludge.

Dax
It points there.
Dax reaches the willow’s edge. The pull stops being a direction and becomes a certainty, as if the tree itself has accepted him.

Heilyn
That tree is no tree. It is part of the path.

Robin Hood
Keep your feet light. If the mire wants attention, do not give it any.
The Minotaur tightens both hands around the green stone sliver and steps in behind Dax, while the Exiled Prince stares at the willow’s roots as if weighing their worth.
“The key opens the tree its the final gate before the thing the key summons”
SUCCESS (Good Knowledge (Occult), rolled +1)
Dax brings the key out at the willow’s roots. Its light sinks into the bark, and old glyphs bloom across the trunk like scars waking up.

Dax
This is the lock.
The willow answers with a deep groan. A seam opens in the wood, tall enough for a man, black at first, then washed in green light from within.

Heilyn
There. The gate was hidden in the tree all along.
The Minotaur flinches back from the opening, but keeps the green stone sliver clenched tight. The Exiled Prince leans toward the glow, hungry and wary at once.

Robin Hood
Careful. If it opens for you, it may be waiting for more than you.
The passage inside widens a handspan more, and something stirs beyond it, just out of sight. The swamp goes silent around the tree, as if it is listening for Dax to step through.
✓ Quest Accepted
Enter the willow gate

“We all enter the gate and something happens to the minotaur all of his fear is gone an is replaced with bravery his fur turns to armor and his horns to golden battle axes”
SUCCESS (Legendary Willpower, rolled -1)

Dax steps into the gate first, and the green light swallows him ankle to shoulder. The others follow close, the swamp vanishing behind a wet curtain of bark and glow.
Inside, the passage flexes like a living throat, then steadies. The Minotaur stumbles, clutches the sliver, and the light catches his fur in hard lines.
Bravery hits him like a spell. His panic drains out, his stance widens, and golden metal blooms over his hide in plates and seams.
His horns wrench and harden, reshaping into paired golden battle axes that hang where his fear used to be.

The Exiled Prince
By the gods... keep moving. That power is ours if it can be held.

Robin Hood
Easy. He changes clean enough, but the gate may not be done with us.

Heilyn
The sliver, the key, the gate, they are all tied together. I can feel the next command ahead.
The corridor opens toward cold air and distant stone. Ahead, through the thinning mist, the castle outskirts wait, while something large shifts once in the dark beyond them.

Enter the willow gate
“Heilyn casts a spell of light so we can see what the shadow is as we press forward”
SUCCESS (Good Knowledge (Occult), rolled -1)

Heilyn lifts the memory shard and begins the light spell, and the corridor answers with a thin white bloom.
The darkness ahead peels back, showing a slick tunnel of roots, mud, and old stone teeth.
Something broad and antlered crouches far off in the mist, its outline broken by the new glare.

Heilyn
There. Now we see what watches the path.

Robin Hood
Keep the light steady. I do not like that shape one bit.

The Exiled Prince
Good. If it is a guardian, it can be named. If it is prey, it can be taken.
Ahead, the passage widens onto a low bank of stone, and the swamp breathes cold around the edge of the light.
✓ Quest Accepted
Identify the antlered shape
“Identify the antlered shape”
SUCCESS (Great Perception, rolled +0)

Dax leans into the light and the fog gives up its secret. The antlered shape is not a beast at all, but a tall guardian form, half drowned in mud, with a buck-headed helm and a body wrapped in root-hung bark.

Dax
A watcher, armored like a shrine.

Heilyn
That is no wandering animal. It is set here on purpose.

Robin Hood
Then we have its attention. Keep low, all of you.
The white spelllight catches wet runes on the guardian's chest and a chain sunk into the stone bank. Beyond it, the passage opens onto darker water, still as glass, waiting for the first step.

The Exiled Prince
Good. It can be named now. That means it can be claimed, or broken.
