The root-stair groans beneath Dax’s boots. Far above, King Arthur, Merlin, Heilyn, Narbo, Robin Hood, and the Exiled Prince remain in the castle hall with bound Talimaryl, while Dax stands alone below.

Heavy hoofbeats rise through the opened roots. A broad silhouette emerges from the darkness, carrying no axes, moving with the calm satisfaction the Minotaur showed when he accepted his fate.

The Minotaur

The Minotaur

You found the throne, hunter. I knew you would.

Black-gold veins pulse beneath the Minotaur’s hide, brightening with each measured step. His golden armor is gone, but something beneath his flesh answers the buried chamber.

The castle is severed. Its hunger does not return through the walls. Yet hunger is patient, and vessels endure.

The Minotaur’s eyes remain clear, almost peaceful. Behind him, the root-stair seals in slow coils, cutting off the distant company and leaving only the throne chamber between Dax and the dark.

The Minotaur

The Minotaur

I was freed once. I remember the feeling. This time, I chose to come below.

✓ Quest Accepted

“I raise the red-wrapped sword and confront the Minotaur's chosen binding.”

Dax raises the red-wrapped sword toward the Minotaur. Its plain steel catches the chamber’s dim light, and the black-gold veins beneath the Minotaur’s hide answer with a hard pulse.

The Minotaur

The Minotaur

Do not mistake my binding for surrender, hunter. I chose the weight, and I will carry it.

The sword’s hidden vow awakens along its blade. Dark silver letters shine, tracing the Minotaur’s chosen bond from his chest into the empty throne.

the buried entity

The blade sees the distinction. This vessel is not stolen. His will holds the chain, and the throne recognizes his consent.

Dax’s raised sword cuts through the unseen tether without touching flesh. The black-gold veins settle into a steady pattern, no longer feeding the throne’s dormant command.

The Minotaur

The Minotaur

There. The choice is mine before the throne, before the hunger, and before you.

The empty throne splits along its raw hollow, revealing a small iron seal beneath the basalt. The seal bears no crown, only a single path descending into deeper darkness.

“I ask the Minotaur what lies beneath the throne.”

Dax

What lies beneath the throne?

The Minotaur

The Minotaur

A buried road, hunter. It leads beneath the foundations to the first chamber where Talimaryl chained his command.

The Minotaur kneels beside the split basalt and brushes dust from the iron seal. Beneath its edge, a deep red glow beats like a buried heart.

The Minotaur

The Minotaur

Below that chamber lies the root of the hunger. Not the entity itself, but the wound through which it first entered this world.

the buried entity

The seal guards a descent into older stone. Talimaryl hid his first crown there, forged from oaths stolen before this castle had walls.

The iron seal loosens beneath the Minotaur’s hand, revealing a narrow stair spiraling into crimson darkness. Cold air rises, carrying the smell of ash and ancient rain.

The Minotaur

The Minotaur

If you seek the threat beneath us, descend. I will follow, and whatever waits below will learn that my choice was not weakness.

The crimson stair descends beneath the seal, each step slick with cold moisture. As Dax approaches, the red glow below abruptly changes rhythm, answering the sword’s hidden vow.

The Minotaur

The Minotaur

Stop. That is not the wound waking. Something above it has heard us.

Behind them, the iron seal slams shut without a hand touching it. A second impact follows from below, then another, as though immense knuckles test the ancient stair.

the buried entity

The crown was never buried alone. Talimaryl left a sentinel to guard his first command, and it does not recognize consent.

Black ash drifts upward against the cold air. On the stair wall, old oath-lines flare crimson and rearrange themselves into the outline of a horned figure kneeling before a crown.

The Minotaur

The Minotaur

The throne chose me, but this place was built to reject every chosen vessel.

The pounding below stops. In the silence, a deep voice speaks through the stone, repeating the final words of Talimaryl’s command in a slow, distorted echo.

Hunter, descend with the sword uncovered. If the sentinel sees the vow, it may open the wound. If it sees the crown, it will take you.

The Sentinel

Dax descends with the red-wrapped sword uncovered. Crimson light slides along its plain steel, and each oath-line on the stair bends toward the blade.

The Minotaur

The Minotaur

Keep it bare, hunter. Let the vow speak before the crown can answer.

The stair accepts Dax’s weight. Black ash eddies around his boots, but the crimson steps remain firm as he passes beneath the horned figure carved into the wall.

The sentinel sees the vow. It does not take you. Descend, and the first command will stand revealed.

At the stair’s foot, Dax enters a circular chamber beneath the throne. A crown of dark iron rests on a stone lectern, encircled by a shallow ring of red fire.

Beyond the lectern kneels a towering horned sentinel formed from ash-black stone, its hands lowered and empty. Its featureless face turns toward the uncovered sword.

The Minotaur

The Minotaur

It recognizes you. Now we learn whether Talimaryl’s first command was a command at all, or a chain.
