The ash ring snaps apart. Ozone stings the grotto as loose grit starts to rain from the ceiling.

The Paladin

The Paladin

Drop the rite. You burned innocents and wore the Order's seal to do it.

The Inquisitor

The Inquisitor

And you would let one tainted mage live to spread rot? Fool. I cleanse what you cannot.

The Inquisitor thrusts his sigil toward the floor, and the cave answers with a deep, hollow groan. Surazal's stolen death-magic leaks hot and hungry at his skin.

Surazal

Surazal

The collapse is starting. The Inquisitor is trying to bury every witness.

The Paladin lunges at the Inquisitor instead of Surazal, cracked armor flashing in the dim light. Stone chips fly as the two holy men clash between the mage and the sealing pit.

The Inquisitor

The Inquisitor

Choose, then. Die with the boy, or die as a traitor.

Surazal stands at the edge of the failing rite, his power spilling into the chamber, with the chance to turn the collapse, the paladin, and the inquisitor toward his own escape.

Surazal

Surazal throws his face toward the broken roof and speaks into the dark, offering service for revenge to whatever god rules death.

The cave stills for one breath. Then the shadow above the grotto deepens, and a cold pressure settles over Surazal like a hand on the back of his neck.

A black seam of light answers beneath his skin, threading with the old dark ring. The stolen death-magic stops leaking, and instead gathers, obedient and sharp.

The Inquisitor

The Inquisitor

What have you done?

The Paladin

The Paladin

He has called something greater than your rite.

A pulse rolls through the grotto, and the broken ash circle flares once before crumbling into powder. Stone cracks widen overhead.

Surazal's answering power surges hot through his chest, but the ceiling gives a final shudder and begins to fall, forcing the choice into motion.

I call the god of death to grant me power before I attack the inquisitor

Surazal lifts his gaze into the fracture above, and the dark ring beneath his skin answers like a second heartbeat. The god of death hears him.

Surazal

Surazal

Power gathers. It is mine to take.

Cold force pours through his frame, sharpening the ache into command. He surges from his kneel and drives toward the Inquisitor as the ceiling groans.

The Inquisitor

The Inquisitor

No. Stop him.

The Paladin

The Paladin

You brought this on us.

The Inquisitor snaps up his sigil hand, but the borrowed death in Surazal's chest lashes first. The holy man staggers back through drifting ash and loose stone.

The Paladin freezes for a breath, sword half-raised, his hesitation visible even now. Above them, a fresh crack tears open and dumps a veil of dust between blade and spell.

Surazal answers the crack overhead with a hiss of black fire. It leaps from his hand and staff, crossing the ash-thick air toward the Inquisitor.

The Inquisitor

The Inquisitor

No.

The necrotic flame hits home, swallowing the Inquisitor’s sigil in a burst of dead light. His robe chars at the edge, and he reels into the rubble.

The Paladin

The Paladin

You see it now. He is the one who brought this ruin.

The Paladin turns fully on his superior, sword lifting toward the Inquisitor instead of Surazal. Dust sheets down around all three, thick as smoke.

The Inquisitor

The Inquisitor

The seal is failing. If he lives, we all fall with him.

A long crack races across the ceiling above the Paladin. Stone groans loose, and the half-collapsed mouth spits another wave of choking dust. The next move is no longer inside the grotto alone.

Surazal twists the black fire away from the Inquisitor and hurls it straight at the Paladin.

The blast catches the Paladin across the chest and shoulder. His sword jerks wide, holy sparks collapsing into the ash.

The Paladin

The Paladin

He can hit through the collapse...

The man staggers back into the broken stone, boots scraping for purchase as dust pours from ceiling above him.

The Inquisitor

The Inquisitor

Fool. He will bring the whole grotto down.

The Paladin does not turn his blade toward Surazal again. For one breath, his hesitation holds.

Then another crack splits overhead, and the chamber answers with a deeper groan, stones ready to give way.

Surazal’s black fire leaves his staff in a hard, silent lash. It tears through the ash and strikes the Inquisitor square in the torso, blowing his charred sigil from his hand.

The Inquisitor

The Inquisitor

No... seal it, now!

The order dies in the collapse. The Inquisitor folds backward into the fractured floor, his ritual line broken as soot and splinters spill over him.

The Paladin

The Paladin

He is finished.

The ceiling answers with a loud crack. A slab above the entrance breaks free and crashes down, widening the breach in a burst of dust.

The Paladin

The Paladin

Move, mage. This place is going down!

For a heartbeat, the Paladin keeps his blade between Surazal and the falling stone, then his boots slip on rubble as the grotto groans around all three of them.

Surazal slips into the widening breach as stone keeps breaking behind him. Dust claws at his cloak, but the gap opens onto cold daylight and raw scrub beyond the grotto.

The Paladin lunges after him, then stops short at the lip as the floor shifts under his boots. He lowers his blade a fraction, choosing balance over pursuit.

The Paladin

The Paladin

Go! Before the whole hill takes you with it!

Surazal clears the threshold and lands hard outside, alive, with the collapsing entrance roaring at his back. The storm of dust spills out into the wilderness and swallows the grotto mouth.

The Inquisitor

The Inquisitor

No... the seal...
