Vessel of the Fractured Void

The cave mouth yawns out of a black ridge, half-hidden by bent thorn and ash-streaked grass. Cold air leaks from within, carrying wet stone, old soot, and something faintly iron-sour.

Surazal stands just inside the shelter, the wilderness spread behind him in gray ripples of dusk. The crooked marker stone on the ridge catches what little light remains, like a warning finger.

From outside, a single set of footsteps crunches over shale. Not many, just one, and careful enough to mean trouble or caution.

The Stranger appears at the edge of the entrance, hood damp with mist, one hand kept visible and empty. Behind them, the ridge falls away into broken scrub and darkening gullies.

The warning lands as a thin shape moves across the ridge, far off but closing, while the cave behind Surazal offers only darkness and the chance to choose it first.

Oren eases back from the ridge, one hand briefly touching the brass token at his belt before he turns away. The Stranger lowers their hood a fraction, then steps off the threshold and vanishes into the dusk.

His boots scrape shale, then fade. The cave mouth is left to Surazal and the cold breathing dark, with the lingering ache of borrowed life still humming under his skin.

Silence returns, thin but real, and the wilderness outside feels farther away than before.

The cave mouth held the last of the dusk, and Surazal stood alone where the wild met the dark.

Their footsteps faded into the trees, and the silence returned, heavier than before.

Deep within Surazal, the fractured souls surged at last and drowned the mind that had tried to command them. The cave kept its secret while the wilderness went still around it, and what remained at the threshold was only a vessel for cold necromantic power. No pursuit found him there, only the end of the man who had sought to master the dead.
