The river withdraws from the old ferry stones, exposing a narrow line of ancient blue symbols. Kaelen stands behind Mera as five Bon-rion warriors escort the prisoner from the nearby riverward camp.
Poru and Brokk remain hidden in the sacred caves under guard, with the wolves watching the approaches. The guarded route from Reedhook Bend lies empty behind Mera and Kaelen.

The Prisoner
They appeared along the whole route. Blue marks in the mud, on stones, beneath the reeds. I swear they were not there before.
The prisoner trembles between the warriors, staring at the exposed symbols. Kaelen looms behind Mera and places his knife into her hand, its familiar weight carrying a silent warning.

Kaelen
River shows old writing. Prisoner saw it wake. Speak all truth, or stones speak for you.
No gate opens. Instead, the river settles into the hollows around the stones, and a voice rises through them from beneath the water, distant yet intimate.

The Voice Beyond the Doorway
Vaelith. Winter-bound keeper. You have returned to the crossing, and the sealed deep remembers your hand.
The blue symbols brighten beneath Mera’s feet. Nothing passes through them, but the cold presence below waits with patient certainty, while the prisoner sinks to his knees.
“she asks Kaelen what this man is being held for? What sin he committed, not loud enough for everyone to hear but enough to guide her husband to find out. She silently thanks the voice beneath the stones, sending it a thankful prayer. Praying her gratitude for helping guide her, and for the safety of her family”
SUCCESS (Superb Persuasion, rolled -2)

Mera
Kaelen, what is this man held for? What sin did he commit? Find the truth, quietly.
Mera keeps her voice low, directing the question through her husband rather than toward the kneeling prisoner. The warriors hear only enough to watch Kaelen’s answer.

Kaelen
He served Hall. Took word of children, marked homes, led agents toward Bon-rion hiding places. Sin is betrayal, and danger to our blood.

The Prisoner
I carried orders. I did not take the children. I told you the Hall wanted their marks, and I led you to Veyr.
Kaelen’s grip tightens on the knife he has placed in Mera’s hand, but he does not silence the prisoner. The man’s defense wins him no freedom, only a narrower charge.

Mera
Voice beneath the stones, I thank you. Guide me, and keep Poru and Brokk safe in the sacred caves.
The bone spirit necklace clicks softly as Mera’s silent gratitude passes through Innate Spellcasting. Reads Spiritual Traces finds the river presence answering with warmth, while the blue symbols brighten beneath her feet.
“She blinks and then remembers "Oh this was the man from then.. I did not realize he was still here.. Do what you will with him. My children are safe," she thinks "Are they not?" she moves closer to the prisoner”
SUCCESS (Great Perception, rolled -1)

Mera
That was the man from then. I did not realize he was still here. My children are safe, are they not?
Mera moves closer to the prisoner, studying his face and the traces clinging to him. Reads Spiritual Traces follows river, earth, and winter spirits through his memories of the route.
The spirits show no fresh trail leading from the sacred caves. Instead, they gather around the hidden paths and the children’s shelter, calm and watchful beneath the guarding wolves.

The Prisoner
Do what you will. I told you what I knew. The Hall cannot reach them while your people hold the caves.
The prisoner lowers his gaze as Mera’s approach leaves him nowhere to hide behind excuses. Kaelen remains behind her, immense and silent, with the knife still offered in her hand.
Reads Spiritual Traces confirms the answer: Poru and Brokk remain within the sacred caves, their spirits undisturbed. The river’s warmth folds around them like a quiet promise of protection.

Kaelen
Children safe. Prisoner lives until truth finished. You decide what comes after.
“"Youi will carry a message to your city" she kneels down and takes a stone from the path. She cuts her palm and stains it with her own blood. "Coming for Bon-rion children is an act of blood.. You are free.. but this will be remembered.. not forgiven." and she holds the stone out to him.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Willpower, rolled -2)

Mera kneels beside the path and takes up a smooth stone. Kaelen looms behind her, his knife still offered, while the prisoner watches without moving.
She cuts her palm with Kaelen’s knife and presses the blood across the stone. Innate winter magic carries the warning into it, while Reads Spiritual Traces finds river and earth spirits listening.

Mera
You will carry a message to your city. Coming for Bon-rion children is an act of blood. You are free, but this will be remembered, not forgiven.
Mera holds out the blood-stained stone. Her will gives the spirits a narrow, obedient purpose, but the effort costs her composure; her hand pauses visibly before she steadies it.

The Prisoner
I will carry it. They will know the Bon-rion have judged the Hall, and that your children are beyond its reach.
The prisoner accepts the stone with both hands. Kaelen releases his hold, and the man rises slowly, free to follow the riverward path toward the city under the weight of Mera’s warning.
“She cuts the man's ropes and she turns to her husband. "Shall we go home, my love?" she has dismissed the man entirely. "Or has our journey not ended? I said I would follow you off a cliff as long as our young are safe." she is looking at him with love, just waiting for an answer.”
SUCCESS (Superb Persuasion, rolled -2)

Mera cuts through the prisoner’s ropes and lets the severed bindings fall. Her Guides Through Danger keeps her aware of every movement, while Shelters the Innocent makes her dismissal unmistakable: he is free to go.
The river wind presses cold against her damp clothes, but her blessed furs hold a small, steady comfort around her. She turns from the departing man toward Kaelen, the offered knife lowering between them.

Mera
Shall we go home, my love? Or has our journey not ended? I said I would follow you off a cliff as long as our young are safe.
Kaelen studies her face instead of the empty path. The choice costs him the authority to command their next step alone, and the burden settles visibly across his broad shoulders.

Kaelen
Children safe. We go home, wife. Journey ended here, unless spirits call us again. I follow your word, and tribe will know you spared the Hall’s man.
He returns the knife to her hand, then reaches for her with his other arm. Behind them, the freed prisoner disappears along the river path, carrying her judgment toward the city.
“she gets into the boat and closes her eyes. She can't wait to get home, or at least to the caves where her children are hidden. Leaving behind Veyr, the prisoner, the drowned stair and everything not related to her tribe”
SUCCESS (Great Agility, rolled -1)
