Mera arrives as the Bon-rion settlement gathers beneath a gray sky. At the riverbank gallows, Kaelen stands broad and immovable while elders, a cluster of elderly men and women in layered brown hides and wool, their lined faces framed by gray hair keep Poru, a small human girl with dark braids, brown skin, and a rust-red tunic behind them.
The prisoner is a gaunt adult man with cropped brown hair, a bruised cheek, and a mud-stained green cloak. His wrists are bound as he is marched beneath the rope.

Kaelen
He take little Poru. He answer before river and tribe.
Uneasy murmurs pass through the gathered Bon-rion. Some stare at the rope; others watch the child’s guardians, as though judgment itself has become dangerous.

The Prisoner
I never meant harm. The girl is marked by powers you do not understand. I was bringing her to those who could reveal them.
The river wind turns sharply cold around the gallows. Frost feathers the rope, and the prisoner’s breath clouds white despite the season’s mild air.

Kaelen
Enough. Mera come. Rope waits for next word.

Confront the man over stealing one of hers
Director's notewhole tale
Poru had run off but not to find her brother. just to hide among the nearby canoes
“Mera walks past everyone and goes to her daughter. She kneels down and pulls Poru into her. She kisses her child softly and then looks up. "Go to your brother Brokk" she whispers to the little girl. "Be safe my little river shaman." she shoos off her child, so she doesn't see what is about to happen. As Poru runs off, Mera turns. Her eyes gleaming as she smiles darkly "You come from the city to steal one of mine... Why?" licking her lips she slinks tot he man and she slowly runs a finger over his jaw. She looks to her husband "Before he hangs... we should find out why."”
SUCCESS (Good Intimidation, rolled +3)

Mera passes beneath the elders’ wary stares and kneels beside Poru. She gathers the girl close, kisses her softly, then guides her toward the canoes.

Mera
Go to your brother Brokk. Be safe, my little river shaman.
Poru hurries away, but slips behind the nearest canoes instead of seeking Brokk. Mera turns back as the river wind lifts white strands through her red hair.

Mera
You come from the city to steal one of mine. Why?
She approaches the prisoner and slowly traces one finger along his bruised jaw. His eyes flick toward the hidden canoes, then return to her.

Mera
Before he hangs, we should find out why.

The Prisoner
Because the city knows the girl carries the river’s winter mark. I was sent to bring her to the Hall of Seals, not harm her. The seal-token is sewn inside my cloak. It proves who ordered me.

Confront the man over stealing one of hers
Director's notewhole tale
Kaelen looms behind her and hands a knife to her
“"No.. I carry the Winter Mark. Poru carries one of the Spring storm...." she reaches a hand back and asks for a knife silently. When she gets the blade she presses it between the man's legs "Try again"”
SUCCESS (Good Intimidation, rolled -1)

Mera
No. I carry the Winter Mark. Poru carries one of the Spring storm...
Kaelen looms behind Mera and places a knife into her waiting hand. She presses its point against the prisoner’s cloak below his waist, and the gathered tribe falls silent.

Mera
Try again.

The Prisoner
The Hall of Seals wants both marks. Poru is the bait. They believe winter and spring together can open the drowned gate beneath the city.
The prisoner jerks against the blade, slicing his own cloak. A small brass token drops into the mud, stamped with a sealed eye and the city’s river sigil.

Kaelen
Drowned gate? You bring city hunger to river children?

The Prisoner
I was ordered to retrieve her alive. If I failed, others were already coming. They will follow the token’s trail.

The brand on her left wrist she places over the matching brand on his right. each pulse at the closeness . there is no commanding presence, just the pulse of magic that bind their marriage
“"The Bon-rion are not of your city!" she yells and then turns to her husband. "Husband.. Hit him" she touches his chest and leans up to kiss him. "You are the Chieftain. I am your wife..Teach him before I grow angry"”
SUCCESS (Great Intimidation, rolled +2)

Mera
The Bon-rion are not of your city!
Mera turns from the prisoner to Kaelen. Her hand touches his chest, and she rises to kiss him, the brands on their wrists pulsing together beneath the gray sky.

Mera
Husband. Hit him. You are the Chieftain. I am your wife. Teach him before I grow angry.
Kaelen’s immense frame tightens. He steps past Mera and strikes the prisoner across the face with one heavy hand, knocking him into the mud without drawing blood.

Kaelen
You speak city hunger here. You threaten river children. You learn Bon-rion answer.
The brass token lies half-buried beside the prisoner’s hand. Around it, frost spreads in a thin ring, while the gathered tribe watches Kaelen reclaim the judgment.

The Prisoner
I understand! The Hall sent three more agents. They are not far behind me, and they know the drowned gate is waking.

Keep Poru from being seized by the Hall's agents
“Mera watches and then looks to what fell. she, slowly moves towards it "I suggest you tell my husband something something that will make him spare you. Because.. You tried to take OUR daughter" she kneels and slowly moves the dirt and mud away from the token. "Unless you wish to suffer my judgement?" her eyes flash and she brings the knife to her mouth. the blade touching her lips. "Winter comes soon, and..... The tribe, always, needs meat"”
SUCCESS (Great Intimidation, rolled -1)

Mera watches the prisoner sink into the mud, then turns toward the brass token. With Kaelen’s knife still in her hand, she approaches and kneels.

Mera
Tell my husband something that will make him spare you. You tried to take our daughter. Unless you wish to suffer my judgement.
She slowly brushes mud aside, revealing the sealed eye and river sigil. Then she raises the blade to her mouth, its edge resting against her lips as her eyes flash.

The Prisoner
Spare me, and I tell all. The Hall of Seals has a captain waiting downstream. He carries the warrant and knows the gate’s exact place.
The knife slips just enough to nick Mera’s lip. A bright bead of blood touches the steel, while frost seals the mud around the token.

The Prisoner
I am not their captain. I was bait, sent to make the tribe reveal the Winter Mark. The captain intends to take Kaelen alive.

Kaelen
You give reason. I spare hanging, not freedom. You lead us to captain, or river judge you.
Director's note
Mera's eyes cloud over and become pale white orbs as she looks at the sigil
“"Hmm.. what are you?" she asks the little sigil and she mutters a prayer over it. She is ignoring the man, for the moment. and her eyes become sightless, while her lips move in her language. a prayer to see what the sigil is, and why it drew her attention”
FAILURE (Mediocre Arcana, rolled -1)

Mera
Hmm... what are you?
Mera leaves the brass token in the mud beside the prisoner. She kneels over it without touching it, murmuring a prayer in the old Bon-rion tongue as her eyes pale into sightless white.
The frost ring tightens around the sealed eye. Cold climbs through the mud, but the sigil gives no single answer. Instead, two distant impressions wrench across her inner sight: winter beneath black water, and spring thunder behind a locked gate.

Mera
The token is calling to two marks, but it will not show which hand made it.
Her prayer cannot reveal the token’s nature from across the small space, and the vision collapses before its purpose becomes clear. The brass eye turns dull, its frost crusting over the stamped river sigil.

The Prisoner
That is the Hall’s binding. It answers only when carried by one marked for the gate.

Kaelen
You hear spirit? Tell me what it say. Then we take token, and prisoner leads.
“"I do not know, love. Spirits might want a sacrifice to tell me" she looks to the man and grins darkly, her yes still pale. She grabs his hand and cuts it, then drops blood on the sigil before trying her prayer again”
FAILURE (Mediocre Arcana, rolled +1)

Mera
I do not know, love. Spirits might want a sacrifice to tell me.
Mera’s pale eyes turn toward the prisoner, and a dark grin touches her face. She seizes his bound hand, reaching for the knife, but her fingers close on empty air.

The Prisoner
Wait. You said the spirits answer, not that they demand blood.
The prisoner twists instinctively, and his hand slips from Mera’s grasp before she can cut it. Kaelen’s knife is no longer within her reach, while the brass token remains in the mud.

Mera
The knife is gone, but the token still remembers blood.
Mera presses the bead from her nicked lip onto the sealed eye and begins the prayer again. Frost recoils, then gathers in thin lines toward the river sigil.

Kaelen
Not prisoner blood. Your blood wakes something. Spirit show path, or warning?
The token cracks with a sound like ice underfoot. Within its dull brass eye, Mera glimpses a submerged stone stair descending beneath black water, and one fresh handprint waiting on its lowest step.

“(How do I raise her prayer casting? just continue to use it? will that work? she is meant to be a woman touched by spirits and a seer. so if I just continue casting attempts, will arcana raise?)”
NO, BUT (Likely, rolled 72)

The vision shivers and breaks apart. Repeated prayer does not deepen the sight; each attempt merely circles the same sealed eye, finding frost, water, and silence.
Yet one detail remains sharp: the handprint below the drowned stair is not an answer, but an invitation. The token can guide a marked bearer there.

Kaelen
Spirit show place, not truth. We follow place. Prisoner leads, token stays.

The Prisoner
The captain will know that stair. If the token has shown it to you, the gate is closer than I feared.
The brass token settles cold in the mud. Its cracked eye no longer calls toward Mera, but the river sigil now points faintly downstream, toward a bend hidden beyond the reeds.

Kaelen
More prayer alone will not teach spirit tongue. You must see what it gives, then walk where it points.
Behind the canoes, Poru remains concealed. Beyond the settlement, the gray river carries a thin veil of mist downstream, marking the direction of the drowned stair.
“"Do what you will with him, husband. I will go to our daughter. Make him tell you who his friends are before you cast judgement, my love." she takes the sigil and wraps it in a pelt and gives the man a cold, sinister smile. He can see how Mera is one that is in touch the the spirits of winter in her icy and slightly sinister stare. She then turns and heads off to find her daughter, sigil in hand.”
SUCCESS (Great Persuasion, rolled +3)

Mera
Do what you will with him, husband. Make him tell you who his friends are before you cast judgment, my love. I will go to our daughter.
Mera lifts the brass sigil from the mud and folds it into a blessed pelt. Her pale, winter-cold stare fixes on the prisoner with a quiet, sinister promise before she turns away.

Kaelen
You hear her. Names. Friends. Captain. Tell all, or river judge you after truth is done.

The Prisoner
The captain is Veyr, and two seal-bearers serve him. They camp at Reedhook Bend, beneath the old ferry stones.
Kaelen takes the prisoner by his bindings and hauls him upright. The man’s face drains as the chieftain turns him toward the downstream mist, while the token remains safely wrapped in Mera’s hands.

Kaelen
You lead us there. You speak every friend on road. No hanging yet. Judgment waits at drowned stair.
Mera walks between the canoes, following Poru’s small tracks through damp sand. Behind a rib of painted wood, the hidden girl watches silently, clutching her rust-red tunic.

Brass sigil
“When she finds Poru she bends down and lifts her up into her arms "Didn't I tell you to find your brother?" she smiles softly. She knows that everyone sees her as the evil queen to her husband's good king. But she is gentle and loving, actually. The spirits she was touched by just make it easy for her to be dark and intimidating. But with her husband, and her children? that is rarely the case. "Come on my sweet Shaman. Let's go find him." and she carries Poru as they walk away”
SUCCESS (Fair Strength, rolled +2)

Mera reaches behind the painted canoe rib and finds Poru crouched in the damp sand. She bends, lifts the girl securely into her arms, and settles her against the fur-trimmed sleeve.

Mera
Didn't I tell you to find your brother?

Poru
I was going to. I only hid because everyone looked angry.
Mera smiles softly, and the cold severity that frightened the gathered tribe disappears from her face. Poru’s small hands gather a fold of Mera’s dark reddish-brown clothing.

Mera
Come on, my sweet shaman. Let’s go find him.

Poru
Brokk is near the fish racks. He said he would wait there.
Carrying Poru, Mera walks along the riverbank toward the fish racks. Behind her, Kaelen’s broken commands and the prisoner’s frightened answers fade beneath the steady hush of downstream mist.
