The Bell’s Contradictory Memory

A month into the northward migration, Mera rests at a small roadside sanctuary above the Xernal. Wind combs the dry grass, and old prayer ribbons click against the shrine posts.

A lone shrine-keeper approaches along the road, an elderly woman with weather-browned skin, white hair braided beneath a gray hood, and a narrow bronze bell wrapped in blackened cloth, slight and stooped beneath a charcoal wool cloak. She carries it carefully in both hands.

As the keeper nears Mera, the cloth stirs without wind. Frost crawls across the bell’s bronze, and its muted ring rolls through the sanctuary like sound rising from deep water.

Sava

Sava

I am Sava, keeper of this road shrine. I found that bell in an abandoned Hall waystation, where no prayer has been answered for generations.

The Drowned Voice

The Drowned Voice

Boundary... keeper... return the bell...

Sava

Sava

It belonged to the first keeper of the boundary. That is what its memory says. But the river spirits preserve another story, and their story contradicts it.

The bell falls silent in Sava’s hands. Beneath the silence, Mera can sense two spiritual traces: one cold and drowned within the bronze, the other flowing north with the Xernal, each claiming a different beginning.

Discover the true origin of the boundary bell

“She looks at the woman and tilts her head quizzically "You come to me? If the spirits want the bell, you know my answer." she isn't being mean, she is smiling softly and reaching a hand out for the bell in a friendly matter "What is it you wish from the Bon-rion? You know that most of us would tell you to do as the spirits ask"”

You come to me? If the spirits want the bell, you know my answer. What do you wish from the Bon-rion? Most of us would tell you to obey them.

Mera tilts her head with a soft smile and extends her hand. Her bone spirit necklace clicks against her chest as Reads Spiritual Traces follows the drowned cold in the bronze and the river-current flowing north.

Innate Spellcasting carries her invitation into the sanctuary. The bell’s frost loosens beneath Mera’s fingers, and its weight passes willingly from Sava’s careful hands into hers.

Sava

Sava

I came because the river will not take it, and the old memory will not release it. If the Bon-rion claim the boundary, I ask you to carry its burden openly.

The bell rests in Mera’s palm without ringing. Its drowned trace bends toward her winter-marked presence, while the living river-trace curls around her wrist like a witness to the exchange.

Then it is yours, Mera. I will tell every traveler that the road’s old boundary has found its keeper again.

“She takes the bell and motions for the woman to follow her. She wades into the river and begins prayer. Asking for the river to tell her what she is to do with the bell. and wanting to know if she should bury it in its bed, or take it somewhere”

Mera takes the bell and motions for Sava to follow. She wades into the Xernal until the current folds around her knees, then raises the bronze above the water and begins her prayer.

The bone necklace clicks softly against her chest, giving her words the weight of Bon-rion belonging. Innate Spellcasting carries the prayer into the current, while Reads Spiritual Traces separates the river’s living answer from the bell’s drowned memory.

Frost retreats from the bell, but the river does not claim it. Instead, a clear current gathers around Mera’s legs and turns north, tugging gently toward the migration route.

The Drowned Voice

The Drowned Voice

Do not bury what was made to mark the boundary. Carry it north, where river-road and winter-path first divide. There, set it beneath open sky.

The boundary bell answers with one muted note. Its bronze shows a new trace: not a grave, but a resting place beside the river, where its warning can protect travelers without binding the Xernal.

Sava

Sava

Then I will walk with you to that division. The road shrine can wait, if the river has named a better shrine for it.

The current eases around Mera and releases her toward the bank. She knows what must be done: take the bell north and place it beneath the open sky at the first division of river-road and winter-path.

Discover the true origin of the boundary bell

“nodding she lowers herself into the water and she takes a seat. She relaxes in the waters, enjoying them flowing about her and remarks softly "If we are to travel, I must wait for my husband or his guard. He would not like his wife leaving the tribe without protection."”

SUCCESS (Fair Health, rolled +0)

Mera nods, lowers herself into the Xernal, and settles onto a submerged stone. The current presses around her knees, while her blessed furs shed the water and hold a pocket of warmth against the river’s chill.

Mera

Mera

If we are to travel, I must wait for my husband or his guard. He would not like his wife leaving the tribe without protection.

Her quiet words drift beneath the clicking prayer ribbons. The bell rests beside her on the bank, and its bronze gives one faint tremor as the northbound current curls past.

Sava

Sava

Then we wait, Mera. Your husband’s caution is worthy of respect, and the river will not begrudge a guarded journey.

Mera relaxes into the flowing water, but the submerged stone shifts beneath her weight and bruises her thigh. She keeps her seat, breathing through the sharp ache as the blessed furs preserve her warmth.

Sava remains nearby beneath the gray hood, watching the road while Mera waits in the river. Northward, the current continues its patient pull, carrying the promise of the migration route.

“While she waits for her husband she gathers river weeds from around her and starts to try and weave them together. She is, still, determined to try and weave a hairband, or bracelet from them for her daughter. And she will continue until her husband arrives.”

Mera gathers the river weeds floating around the submerged stone and lays them across her knees. Her blessed furs keep the chill comfortable as she twists the slick strands together.

Innate Spellcasting coaxes the weeds to align, but the fibers swell and split beneath her fingers. The forming band loosens, slipping apart into the current before it can hold its shape.

Mera

These need drying before they can carry a knot.

Among the failed braid, three pale rivergrass stems remain unbroken. Their inner fibers gleam silver-blue, stronger than the outer weeds and marked by a faint winter trace.

Sava

Sava

Those stems are reed-heart. Let them dry, and they will take a binding. The river has shown you better material.

Sava watches from the bank while Mera sets the three stems on a flat sun-warmed stone. The attempt has not made Poru’s gift, but it has given Mera a usable beginning for one.

“"I have never been good at this" she laughs and slowly comes out of the river she holds her latest attempt smiling softly. She sets in in the sun on a rock to dry "So you may know better than I. Thank you." she takes a seat and waits for her husband to show. "So, the shrine had always held this bell? Or is it new?"”

Mera laughs softly and rises from the Xernal, carrying the failed braid from the water. She lays it beside the reed-heart stems on the sun-warmed rock, then settles onto the bank to wait.

Mera

Mera

I have never been good at this. So you may know better than I. Thank you.

Innate Spellcasting steadies the drying fibers, drawing a thin warmth from the sunlight without scorching them. The reed-heart takes the shape of a future binding, while Sava watches with guarded approval.

Mera

Mera

So, did the shrine always hold this bell, or is it new?

Sava

Sava

The shrine is older than the bell. I found it three winters ago beneath the waystation floor, wrapped in Hall-blackened cloth. I kept that from travelers because I feared what claiming it would invite.

Sava places both hands over her empty palms, accepting the weight of the confession. Her trust in Mera deepens, but so does the favor now owed: she will publicly name the bell’s history and Mera’s Bon-rion guardianship to every traveler.

Hoofsteps sound along the north road. Kaelen appears beyond the prayer ribbons, broad and familiar, with the migration guard following at a respectful distance. Sava straightens as Mera’s husband approaches.

“Seeing him she softly excuses herself and she walks to Kaelen. She greets him with a kiss, standing on her toes to reach him. This both shows Sava that he is safe, and Kaelen that Mera is not in any danger. "My love. This kind woman has given me a bell. And asked to travel with us north"”

My love. This kind woman has given me a bell, and asked to travel with us north.

Innate Spellcasting carries Mera’s introduction through the clicking ribbons with gentle authority. The wrapped bronze bell gives a quiet answering tremor, and Sava’s guarded posture eases.

Mera safe. Good. Sava walks with us, if river and Bon-rion road allow it.

Sava

They allow it, chieftain. I will carry the bell openly and tell every traveler why the Bon-rion guard the boundary.

Kaelen’s arm settles around Mera’s shoulders, solid and reassuring. Behind him, the migration guard lowers their watchfulness as Sava takes her place beside the roadward journey.

Then come north with us, shrine-keeper. Bell travels under Bon-rion protection. We leave when Mera is ready.
