The frost line parts farther as Mera approaches, revealing an ancient chamber descending toward a sealed arch of blue ice. Kaelen looms close behind her, knife ready in her hand, while Veyr watches from the threshold.

The Voice Beyond the Doorway

The final passage. Its ward is failing. Beyond it, what was sealed is beginning to remember the way out.

Blue light pulses beneath the arch’s surface, revealing layered symbols trapped in the ice. The shell-lined chamber descends around them, empty except for the cold presence watching from beyond.

Veyr

Those symbols were concealed from every Hall record. They mark a containment ward, older than the drowned gate. If it fails, the Hall never understood what it was guarding.

Kaelen shifts nearer, broad shoulders nearly filling the threshold behind Mera. His knife remains extended toward the blue arch, while Veyr stays back, visibly measuring each buried sign.

The ward will not hold through another turning. Winter-born bar the passage, or the sealed deep will open to river, stone, and sky.

A hairline fracture appears across the blue ice, then seals itself with a low crystalline groan. The path downward stands open before Mera, but the failing ward leaves no promise of time.

“"Why does something bound by Winter need me? Or one of spring? Will doing this help my people? Or just this city?" she doesn't understand why she needs to be here, she is intrigued. She is reverent that a spirit is speaking to her, or so it seems, but still doesn't understand.”

Why does something bound by Winter need me? Or one of spring? Will doing this help my people, or only this city?

Mera’s question settles into the shell-lined chamber. Her bone spirit necklace grows cold against her chest, and frost from the knife threads into the blue arch.

Reads Spiritual Traces opens the ward to her perception: winter coils through its binding, spring glimmers in a distant answering current, and neither spirit belongs to the Hall.

Innate Spellcasting carries her words beneath the ice. The fracture closes completely, not hiding the danger but yielding a clear vision of river channels, Bon-rion camps, and a city built above them.

The Voice Beyond the Doorway

Winter needs you because you are a boundary, not a servant. Spring is needed because growth must follow what you preserve. Poru is the living answer to that turning.

This does not belong to the city. If the deep opens, river, camp, and settlement will suffer together. Bar it, and your people keep their paths, their children, and their seasons.

The necklace steadies against Mera’s heart, its carved bones showing no command, only recognition. Beyond the arch, the ward opens a narrow passage toward the sealed deep, and the spirits’ purpose is plain.

“She turns and looks to Veyr "You wished to steal my daughter, to destroy my people?" her cold eyes and piercing gaze drill into him. "Husband.. My beloved chief... make his tell us how to stop it....." she lets her smile turn very dark as she follows that up with a soft "Please."”

You wished to steal my daughter, to destroy my people? Husband, my beloved chief, make him tell us how to stop it. Please.

Mera turns her cold gaze on Veyr. Kaelen’s knife rests in her hand, frost whitening its edge as Reads Spiritual Traces catches winter tightening around the failing ward.

Innate winter magic follows her soft plea into the blue ice. The arch answers with a deep crack, while the spirits expose a command buried beneath the symbols.

Veyr

Veyr

The ward must be barred from within. Set the recovered fragment into the inner seal, then let the winter-marked spirit claim the threshold. Spring must answer from the far side, or the deep will force itself open.

Veyr

Poru need not come here. Her mark can answer across the river if she is protected and willing. Speak her name into the seal, place your blood on the closing line, and command the passage shut.

The revelation lands, but Veyr’s surrender costs Mera his trust. He lowers his eyes and makes clear he will offer no further Hall secrets unless she spares him and accepts his account as complete.

Kaelen

Kaelen

You heard him, wife. Fragment, your winter, Poru’s spring. Veyr gives truth now, but he fears your judgment more than mine.

“"You wish to seal me inside?" she looks at him and then turns to the ward. She takes the fragment of the stone kaelen has and pushes it into the ward "I do wish to hold my daughter's children. I will not be sealed within."”

You wish to seal me inside? I do wish to hold my daughter's children. I will not be sealed within.

Mera takes the recovered fragment from Kaelen and turns to the blue ward. He looms behind her, knife ready, while she presses the stone into the waiting seal.

Her blessed river stone warms against the fragment, and Reads Spiritual Traces reveals winter and earth spirits separating the closing command from the passage that holds her. Innate Spellcasting follows their guidance.

Mera draws Kaelen’s knife along the closing line, leaving a thin mark of blood. Frost races through the symbols, while the knife anchors the ward to her authority rather than her body.

The blue arch seals with a deep crystalline note. Its fracture vanishes, the passage beyond falls silent, and the ward releases Mera fully onto the shell-lined chamber’s side.

Veyr

Veyr

You barred it without entering. The deep is shut, and the Hall has lost its claim. I have no further command to offer.

The fragment locks into the arch as though grown there. Kaelen remains at Mera’s back, and the sealed ward now answers to Bon-rion winter rather than any city hand.
