Inside the teepee, Mera settles Poru and Brokk close beside the cooking fire. The girl keeps to Mera’s fur-trimmed sleeve, while her young brother watches the meal with quiet, hungry patience.
Fish sizzles over the coals beside gathered roots. Mera’s blessed pelt rests within reach, the brass token wrapped inside, and Kaelen’s knife lies newly returned in her hand.

Poru
Will Kaelen eat with us? He said the river would judge the city man.
The fire pops softly. Beyond the hide flap, voices and footsteps move along the settlement, but Kaelen’s deep broken commands never join them from the riverbank.

Brokk
He is taking a long time.
Mera divides the cooked fish and roots between the three waiting places. Steam gathers beneath the teepee’s crown, carrying salt, smoke, and the clean scent of river water.

Should we leave some warm for him?

Director's notewhole tale
Mera knows that Poru is destined to be a great Shaman. she doesn't know that Poru will, eventually, be a Storm Caller, but she does know that Poru is destined for something. And that destiny is to bear a child that will be the savior of her people. A great warrior that will unite the skirmishing tri
“"You should call him 'Father' little shaman" she pokes Poru's nose lightly and then hands each of her children their food. "Thank the spirits for their blessings" she leads them in a soft prayer in the old language before she tells them to eat, and she gets up to see what is taking her husband so long”
SUCCESS (Great Perception, rolled +1)

Mera
You should call him Father, little shaman.
Mera lightly pokes Poru’s nose, then places warm fish and roots before both children. Poru blinks, while Brokk reaches for his portion with careful patience.

Poru
Father Kaelen.

Brokk
He will like that.

Mera
Thank the spirits for their blessings.
Mera leads them in a soft prayer in the old Bon-rion language. The fire answers with a gentle crackle, and steam curls toward the teepee’s crown as the children bow their heads.
When the prayer ends, Mera tells them to eat and rises, leaving the firelight behind. She parts the hide flap to find what is keeping Kaelen so long, while the wrapped token remains within the teepee.
“"Brokk, Guard your sister" she says, expecting him to do it. Brokk would know what happened earlier, and he is a young man Meant to protect those weaker than he. Mera wraps some cooked fish and edible roots with a leaf and leaves the teepee to find her husband. Passing by other warriors she casually asks them to guard her children.”
SUCCESS (Great Persuasion, rolled -1)

Mera
Brokk, guard your sister.
Mera wraps cooked fish and edible roots in a broad leaf, tying the parcel with a strip of reed before placing it beside the fire.

Brokk
I will. No one takes Poru while I stand.
Brokk shifts nearer to Poru, his young frame settling between her and the open flap. Poru watches Mera with solemn trust, then touches his sleeve.

Mera
Keep them safe until I return.
Mera steps outside carrying the leaf-wrapped meal. Along the path, she passes Bon-rion warriors, adult human men in dark hide armor and river-worn red wraps, their weathered faces marked by braided dark hair checking the riverward camp and speaks to them without breaking stride.

Mera
Guard my children. Brokk knows what happened. Let no city hand come near this teepee.

Bon-rion warriors
They are guarded, Mera. Go find Kaelen.

“She asks one of the womenwhere her husband, the chief, is and then thanks her. She then takes Kaelen his meal.”
SUCCESS (Great Persuasion, rolled +0)
Near the riverward path, a middle-aged Bon-rion woman stands beside a stack of nets. Her sturdy frame is wrapped in russet wool and dark hides, with silver-threaded red hair braided over one shoulder.

Mera
Where is my husband, the chief?

the Bon-rion woman
Kaelen takes prisoner toward old ferry stones. Downstream camp. He says city man speaks more there.

Mera
Thank you.
Mera inclines her head and continues along the river path, carrying the leaf-wrapped meal. Mist drifts between the reeds, and distant voices carry from the ferry stones.
At the riverward camp, Kaelen stands beside the bound prisoner beneath the old stones. The chieftain’s broad shoulders turn as Mera approaches, his attention leaving the prisoner for the warm parcel in her hands.

Kaelen
You bring food, wife. Good. City man talk, but river waits. We eat, then go.

Director's note
Mera trusts her husband's judgement and mind implicitly. He is the chief of the tribe, and he is in charge. She, however, is his queen and in charge of everything that has to do with their children. Their roles seem unequal, but both are needed. While he is, essentially, the lord of the land she rul
“She smiles and she unwraps the food. Feeding him after taking a bite to show him that it is good and not poisoned, as is tradition. "As long as our children are safe, I will follow you off the cliffs of death." she then asks why he did not return t the teepee for food. and stayed out here. She looks around, not actually caring about the prisoner, but out of curiosity.”
SUCCESS (Great Persuasion, rolled +1)
Mera smiles, settles beside Kaelen, and unwraps the leaf parcel. She takes a bite of fish and roots first, then offers the warmed food to him in the old Bon-rion custom.

Kaelen
Good wife. You show river custom. I eat.

Mera
As long as our children are safe, I will follow you off the cliffs of death.
Kaelen accepts the food from her hand and eats beneath the weathered ferry stones. The prisoner waits nearby, while mist slides low over the dark river.

Mera
Why did you not return to the teepee for food? Why stay out here?

Kaelen
City man speaks slow. He names captain, seal-bearers, gate. I keep him where river sees him. Children eat safe. That is enough.
Mera looks across the camp without interest in the prisoner himself, noting the old stones, the downstream path, the watchful Bon-rion guards, and the river mist beyond.

“After eating she prays to the spirits to guide them on their journey, and she sets off with Kaelen. Giving the prisoner a cold stare and an evil grin when the large, usually jovial man that is her husband, isn't looking. Threatening him with just her cold eyes and wicked smile.”
SUCCESS (Mediocre Arcana, rolled +2)

After eating, Mera rises beside Kaelen and turns toward the dark river. She bows her head, lifting a quiet prayer to the spirits of frozen water, ice, and snow.
The mist parts in a narrow silver trail downstream. Frost gathers along the nearest ferry stone, forming a clear arrow toward Reedhook Bend and the drowned stair beyond.

Kaelen
Spirit gives road. Good. We follow before river changes mind.
Kaelen finishes the meal, rises to his full imposing height, and takes the prisoner’s bindings. The bound man stumbles after him as the chieftain starts along the river path.
Mera falls into step beside her husband, carrying the journey’s purpose in her silence. Behind them, the Bon-rion guards remain watchful around the ferry stones.
When Kaelen looks toward the mist, Mera turns her silver-blue eyes on the prisoner. Her cold stare and wicked grin promise that the river’s judgment is not the only one awaiting him.

I will lead you to Reedhook Bend. I will tell you everything before we reach the stones.
