Conflicting Maps and Hidden Dangers

On the lower camp rock, Chuck flips his notebook open wider. The pages are packed with tight sketches of the tunnel, each line fighting the others. Beyond him, the main camp fire glows faintly through the trees.

These are my notes, and they do not match Bruce's at all. If we trust the wrong route, we walk straight into trouble.

He taps three shaded bends on the page, then slides a second sheet over it. The differences line up in ugly little warnings, rockfall here, a narrow choke there, a chamber that should not exist on the official map.

Remedy

The tunnel sketch contradicts the route we planned.

Chuck

Chuck

Look, I am not asking for blind trust. I am asking you to compare this with Bruce's version before anyone commits to the descent.

A branch snaps uphill. Somewhere above, voices from camp shift in the wind, close enough to remind Remedy that every map in this mountain is only as good as the person who drew it.

Compare Chuck's notes with Bruce's route

Lay Chuck's sketches over the map we got from Bruce.

SUCCESS (Great Investigation, rolled +1)

Remedy lifts Bruce’s map onto her knee and spreads Chuck’s sheet over it, lining the tunnel bends to the same light. The traced walls stop disagreeing in the middle, then snap back into agreement at the lower chamber.

Remedy

Remedy

The lower section matches here, not there.

She shifts the papers a finger’s width, and a clean seam appears where Bruce’s route curves too tight for the scale. Chuck’s version leaves breathing room, and a hidden notch marks a side cut in the rock.

Chuck

Chuck

There. That notch is missing from Bruce’s copy. It is not a mistake, either.

Remedy finishes the overlay. The two maps agree on the entrance, but not on the descent, and Chuck’s notes expose a bypass that Bruce’s route never mentions.

Chuck

Chuck

If Bruce is right, we follow the choke point. If I am right, we take the side cut and stay moving.

Up the slope, the camp fire wavers between branches, and the path now feels narrower by choice instead of chance.
