The Mountain's Hidden Teeth

The campfire shrinks behind them as the slope turns mean, all loose stone and knife-edge shadow. Tanner climbs first with a scanning gadget raised high, Gerard close behind, eyes on the ground. Bruce follows a few steps back, quiet and watchful.

The trail markings are fresh here. Someone has been rerouting foot traffic away from the center line.

Tanner

Tanner

Hold up, I’m getting a weird signal right ahead.

He crouches, angling the device toward a dark patch of rock. A thin seam opens between stones with a mechanical click, and a buried panel shifts under the dirt.

Gerard

Gerard

Everyone back. That is not a natural crack.

Bruce lifts one hand, grimacing. The panel stops halfway, then a second mechanism answers from somewhere deeper in the slope. A row of hidden metal teeth shudders into view, blocking the narrow path toward Galgok.

Bruce

Bruce

That’s one of the mountain’s defenses. If we push blind, it keeps waking up.

Ahead, the path forks around the trap. One route is steep but open. The other is tighter, marked by old scrape lines and fresh dust, as if something has dragged there recently.

The Mountain's Hidden Teeth

Remedy lowers her center and picks the steep line, placing each boot where the scree still holds. The slope answers with a soft rattle, but she catches the slide before it starts. Below her, the hidden teeth stay locked off the main track.

She threads along the exposed edge, one hand skimming stone, the other keeping her kit tight to her side. The narrow path bends around the trap and opens on the far side of the fork.

Her phone light flashes across fresh scrape marks and a slanted patch of packed dirt, a rough bypass used before and marked again by recent passage. The dangerous center line is now behind her.

Gerard

Gerard

Nice. Keep that pace, and nobody gets chewed up.

Tanner

Tanner

I’ve got her line on the scanner. It’s clear enough to follow.

Bruce

Bruce

That’s the route I was talking about. Take it slow, and the mountain stays quiet.

Ahead, the bypass narrows into darker stone, while the fork waits behind them like a warning finally ignored. The team gathers at the edge of the safer route, ready to commit.
