Jack directs the two rescued survivors below the mast, where blankets and dry canvas shield them from the wind. Corin helps steady the registrar while Panko checks their breathing.
The royal container remains beneath guard beside the mast, its opened lid propped wide. Dripping papers lie across the canvas, while saltwater ticks steadily from the iron bands onto the deck.
Three muffled bell notes sound beneath the floorboards. A scraping pull follows against The Obsidian’s hull, slow enough to feel deliberate through the soles of every boot.

The Trapped Registrar
That bell belongs to the fishing boat’s signal chain. It is not from any wrecked vessel.

Jack Finch
No one leans over the rail. Corin, keep the survivors back. Panko, guard those papers. We find what is under us without losing anyone else.
Corin plants himself between the survivors and the rail. Panko gathers the damp records into a covered stack, while the crew quiets the rigging and listens for another scrape below.

The Trapped Registrar
The signal chain was meant to ring from the boat’s stern. If it sounds beneath this deck, then something has followed the wreck here.
“I did see shadows in the water, I just assumed they belonged to some big sharks. I think you all can handle to records I am going to check on the drowned woman and make sure she is okay. {Dagg goes over to the woman and checks on her} {meanwhile Panko orders the crew to get the records into Jack's office so they can not be thrown off the deck.} {Corin climbs the mast and uses a spyglass to see if he can see what may be lurking in the water} {Jack runs up to the ships wheel and orders the crew to let the sails loose as he will try and steer away from the creature in the water.}”
SUCCESS (Legendary Health, rolled +1)

Dagg Nabbitt
I saw shadows in the water and assumed they were big sharks. You can handle the records. I will check the drowned woman and make sure she is all right.
Dagg crosses to the rescued woman, the sinking blonde survivor, and checks her breathing, pulse, and responsiveness. His protective instinct keeps him focused despite his usual preference for leaving routine work to others.
The sinking blonde survivor coughs, opens her eyes, and grips Dagg’s sleeve. Her breathing steadies under his careful attention, and he confirms she is recovering safely on the deck.

Panko
You heard him. Get those records into Jack’s office, under canvas and away from the rail. Move carefully, and keep the seals untouched.
Panko directs the crew as they carry the damp papers below. Above them, Corin climbs the mast, steadies himself, and raises a spyglass toward the dark water.

Jack Finch
Loose the sails! Keep the bow moving. I will steer us clear of whatever is beneath us.
Jack reaches the wheel while the crew release the sails. The Obsidian heels into the wind, and Corin searches the wake as a broad shadow turns beneath the foam.
“{As the ship moves closer to land, back in the water Dagg sees a giant tentacle emerge, the same kind of tentacle that Dagg has seen in Panko's tattoos on his arms.} Oh that would have been a cool fish to meet! {Dagg says enthusiastically} {The rest of the crew look horrified that the legendary Kraken has been spotted while Dagg is in awe of the big creature.} {The boat reaches the docks safely}”
SUCCESS (Superb Perception, rolled -2)

Dagg Nabbitt
Oh, that would have been a cool fish to meet!
As The Obsidian moves toward land, a colossal tentacle rises from the water, the visible limb of a colossal adult kraken, its underside lined with pale suckers, ridged and dark, bearing the same curling pattern Dagg has seen inked across Panko’s arms. The crew stare in horror.

Dagg Nabbitt
The markings identify it as the legendary kraken, not a shark or ordinary fish.
Superstition fills the sight with every old warning Dagg has heard, while Reads Hidden Signs cuts through the panic: the tentacle’s shape and markings match the sea legend precisely. He identifies the creature, though the passing moment costs him the chance to study its full body or count its limbs.

The Obsidian's crew
Kraken! Keep the sails full and get us to the docks!
The tentacle sinks without striking. Jack holds the course, Corin helps the shaken survivors below, and Panko keeps the royal records covered as the crew drives the ship toward shore.
The Obsidian reaches the docks safely. Ropes catch the pier posts, the hull settles against the fenders, and the last glimpse of the legendary kraken disappears beyond the bright harbor water.
“{{Dagg goes to the room that the survivors were taken in} Why were you all out in the ocean? {He asks after again making sure the woman is okay.} I need to know why you were there and any information you may have.”
SUCCESS (Fair Diplomacy, rolled +2)

Dagg enters the sheltered room beneath the mast and checks the sinking blonde survivor’s breathing, pulse, and warmth once more. The stranded survivor sits nearby under a dry blanket, watching him carefully.

Dagg Nabbitt
Why were you all out in the ocean? I need to know why you were there and any information you may have.
Questions Witnesses keeps Dagg’s questions orderly, drawing each survivor’s account apart. His relaxed impatience makes the exchange plain and brief, but neither survivor mistakes his purpose.

The Stranded Survivor
We were fishing east of the coast when we found the ironbound crate drifting among wreckage. The royal mark was visible, so I tried to tow it. Then our boat struck something beneath us.

Nerissa Vale
I was carrying messages between the harbor office and Registrar Vale. The crate was expected, but never delivered. Edrin’s boat found it first, and I joined him when we saw the seal.

The Stranded Survivor
Before the hull broke, I saw a dark vessel far off, moving without proper sail. Someone had cut the crate’s chain, and the bell began ringing after that. We were not alone out there.
The account gives Dagg the answer he sought: the survivors were rescuers and witnesses, not raiders. The sinking blonde survivor knows the crate belonged in official hands, while Edrin saw another vessel near the wreck.
“Your clothes are wet and damaged, one second. {Dagg reaches into his bags and finds fresh clothes for the male survivor, ones he took from the Pike men months ago. Dagg rips off the trident symbol off the arm of a orange shirt and hands it to the man. Dagg then reaches into his bag and grabs one of Mara's green dresses that he keeps on him. He hands it to the woman so she can wear it.} You all need fresh dry clothes or you can get very sick. please change. Then we need to discuss your fishing boat.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Willpower, rolled +0)

Dagg opens his packed saddlebag and sorts through Pike’s discarded clothes with practiced care. His relaxed hesitation lasts only a moment before Questions Witnesses brings him back to the survivors’ needs.
He tears the trident emblem from an orange shirt, checks the cloth for hidden marks as he would an official record, and hands the shirt to Edrin. From the same bag, he produces Mara’s green dress for the sinking blonde survivor.

Dagg Nabbitt
You both need fresh, dry clothes or you can get very sick. Please change.
Edrin accepts the orange shirt with a grateful nod and turns behind a hanging canvas. The sinking blonde survivor gathers Mara’s dress against her chest, then steps behind another screen to change.

The Stranded Survivor
Thank you. I will tell you everything I remember about the boat once I am dry.

Nerissa Vale
The dress is warm enough, and I can answer clearly now. Ask what you need about the fishing boat.

Dagg Nabbitt
Good. Change first, then we will discuss your fishing boat and what happened before the wreck.

Get the survivors safely to Devia
“{now the two are changed into new clothes, the male wearing orange and the woman wearing Mara's green dress.} Do you two know what sank your boat? Lets walk and talk, I know this city quite well. Devia is my home. {Dagg walks them into town and takes them to the local Inn. Run by a Hobgoblin named Elbee. a bigger gentleman who wears a red hawaiian style shirt and has a big bushy red mane and pointy teeth as a Hobgoblin does.}”
FAILURE (Fair Diplomacy, rolled -2)

Edrin emerges in Pike’s orange shirt, while the sinking blonde survivor steps from behind the screen in Mara’s green dress. Their borrowed clothes are dry, but both still look shaken.

Dagg Nabbitt
Do you two know what sank your boat? Let us walk and talk. Devia is my home, and I know the city well.
Dagg leads them from the docks through Devia’s busy streets, asking each account in turn. His questions keep the details separate, but his relaxed pace lets the survivors’ answers remain incomplete and overlapping.

The Stranded Survivor
I know what struck us, but not what it was. The water broke beneath the keel, and the crate’s bell began ringing afterward.

Nerissa Vale
I saw no hull, sail, or beast. Only the dark vessel beyond us, and then the current pulled everything apart.
At the local inn, a large hobgoblin gentleman who appears middle-aged blocks the doorway. He wears a red flowered shirt, and his broad face bears a bushy red mane and prominent pointed teeth.

Elbee
Name’s Elbee. I can give them a table, but no room until the harbor office confirms this wreck story. Too many dockside tales become trouble for my inn.

Get the survivors safely to Devia
“{Elbee is a kind gentle man, always smiling and always always helpful no matter the situation. He looks big and mean but he is a softy.} {Dagg sits at a table with the two.} I caught that your name was Edrin but I didnt hear your name miss. What shall I call you? {She answers} well it is nice to meet you both. Now do we think this other ship hit you, I really think you disturbed that big tentacle fish and hit slapped your boat from being scared.”
SUCCESS (Fair Diplomacy, rolled +1)

Elbee guides them to a broad table and brings water without being asked. His large, stern-looking frame bends gently as he checks that both survivors are settled.

Dagg Nabbitt
I caught that your name was Edrin, but I did not hear yours, miss. What shall I call you?

Nerissa Vale
Nerissa Vale. I served Registrar Vale before the wreck, and I am grateful you pulled me from the water.

Dagg Nabbitt
It is nice to meet you both. Do we think the other ship struck you? I think you disturbed that big tentacle fish, and it slapped your boat from being scared.
Questions Witnesses keeps Dagg’s questions focused on what each survivor saw, while his relaxed wish to settle at the table leaves the theory plainly offered rather than pressed. The distinction earns them room to consider it.

The Stranded Survivor
I cannot swear the ship struck us. But the blow came from below, and the dark vessel was too far away to explain it. Your sea creature is possible.

Nerissa Vale
I agree it is possible. I will record that as our best explanation, but I need you to bring us before the harbor office and stand by this account.
The survivors accept the kraken as the likely cause, but Nerissa’s request makes Dagg responsible for presenting their testimony. Elbee nods and quietly sets a ledger beside the table.
“OKay so now we know that the tentacle is what sank the fishing boat and we know that you two, Edrin and Nerissa took the fishing boat offshore {This should complete both of the quests.} The important thing is that you two are safe, and my friend Elbee here, will take good care of you. There is not a nicer man in the entire land, or sea. {Dagg tips his hat to Elbee.}”
SUCCESS (Fair Diplomacy, rolled +1)

Dagg Nabbitt
So we know the tentacle sank the fishing boat, and we know you two, Edrin and Nerissa, took it offshore. The important thing is that you are safe. My friend Elbee will take good care of you. There is not a nicer man in all the land or sea.
Dagg tips his hat to Elbee. The innkeeper straightens, visibly pleased, while Edrin and Nerissa exchange a relieved glance across the broad table.

Elbee
That is a generous word, Dagg. I will see them fed, warmed, and properly reported to the harbor office.
Dagg’s Questions Witnesses keeps the survivors’ accounts distinct, but his relaxed wish to finish the matter lets Elbee take charge without further debate. The reassurance lands, though it also places Dagg’s name beside Elbee’s promise.

Nerissa Vale
Then I will trust him, and I will give the harbor office my full account. Thank you, Dagg. You have done more than rescue us.

The Stranded Survivor
And I will stand beside her testimony. The boat, the crate, and the dark vessel will be recorded honestly.
Elbee opens his ledger and records the survivors’ names, the wreck, and the creature’s attack. The immediate danger is settled, and the two witnesses remain safely under his roof.
