Purple smoke withdraws into Dagg’s human form. Mara’s green-banded hat remains on his head, and he grips the sword as violet fire coils along its blade.
Dagg drags Arden Pike and Caldus Rime from the charcoal shed into the open ground. He places them near the hedge line, beneath the paling moon.
He concentrates the sword’s magic into a narrow purple flame. It catches along the surrounding hedges, making a bright, controlled border visible from Grayfen’s roads.
With the flaming tip, Dagg burns a message into the earth beside the bodies: PIKE IS DEAD. GO HOME OR BE NEXT.
The letters glow violet against the dark soil. Firelight outlines the dead men and climbs the hedges, carrying the warning toward every nearby approach.
No surviving man appears on the roads. Somewhere beyond the visible turns, Pike’s remaining followers must decide whether to investigate, flee, or answer the burning threat.
The sword’s violet flame crackles in Dagg’s hand while the hedge fire holds steady. From the eastern road, a distant movement briefly interrupts the darkness.
