The wagon reaches a rough camp beside the north road. Three armed adult men sort grain sacks beneath Arden Pike’s marked banner, their patched coats dark with road dust and their weapons close at hand.

Rusk and Merrin remain hidden beneath the canvas among the empty sacks. Through a narrow gap, Dagg sees one lean collector, a young adult man with a narrow, weathered face and short brown hair gripping half a notched tally while another kneels beside an open ledger, a stocky middle-aged man with a broad, stubbled face and thinning gray hair.

The Alder farm is marked twice. Either they paid twice, or someone is keeping a second purse.

The Ledger Keeper

The Ledger Keeper

Alder paid once. The second mark belongs to Wren Hollow, and you know it. Stop scratching figures wherever they fit.

The tally bearer slaps his half against the ledger’s matching edge. The notches align, but a missing corner leaves one farm’s payment uncertain. The third collector, a wiry adult man with a sun-darkened face, shaved jaw, and crooked nose watches the road instead of the argument.

The Road Watcher

The Road Watcher

Keep your voices down. A wagon is coming, and the driver may have heard enough already.

All three men turn toward Dagg’s wagon. The ledger remains open beside the sacks, and the two halves of the tally lie within easy reach as the horses slow before the camp.

“hello gentlemen, how can I, a lowly rancher, help you three today. {Dagg says as he gently sets his bow next to him ready to grab at any minute}”

Hello, gentlemen. How can I, a lowly rancher, help you three today?

Dagg gently sets his bow beside him, close enough to seize without haste. The old elven weapon rests ready, its strange craftsmanship hidden beneath dust and ranch wear.

The road watcher studies Dagg’s hands, but Dagg meets his gaze with the steady patience of a man accustomed to being observed. The offer sounds humble, though his attention never leaves the camp.

The Road Watcher

The Road Watcher

A rancher, are you? Then you may have brought what we are owed. Stop the team there and speak plainly.

The relaxed warmth of the road and unfinished ranch work lingers in Dagg’s posture, making the pose seem natural rather than practiced. The collectors accept the harmless persona.

The Ledger Keeper

The Ledger Keeper

Bring your grain ledger forward, rancher. We will check the levy against the road account.

The Collector with the Notched Tally

The Collector with the Notched Tally

And keep that bow where it lies. We have no quarrel if you have no quarrel with Pike’s lawful collection.

The three men turn their attention to Dagg as though he belongs among the ordinary farmers they have pressed for payment. The ledger and joined tally remain exposed beside the grain sacks.

Confront Arden Pike’s collectors

“{Dagg reaches around his things and finds an worn down journal that he keeps all of his field records in, His grain records are bigger than every other farm in the area put together} Okay boys, I will show you my records as soon as you tell me everything about this lawful ta, who Pike is, and I want you to tell me what my ranch name is. I mean if you are doing a lawful tax around these parts then surely you should know the name of the biggest ranch in this area.”

Dagg rummages through the wagon’s bundled records at an unhurried rancher’s pace, the unfinished farmwork tugging at him. His watchful eyes never leave the collectors’ hands, and he finds a worn journal beneath the reins.

Dagg Nabbitt

Dagg Nabbitt

Okay, boys. I will show you my records once you tell me everything about this lawful tax, who Pike is, and what my ranch is called. Surely you know the biggest ranch in the area.

He opens the journal across his knee. Page after page records grain, seed, and deliveries, with figures larger than every other farm’s combined trade. The bluff lands before he offers a single number.

The Road Watcher

The Road Watcher

Arden Pike is the reeve’s appointed collector, or claims to be. The levy is meant for grain moved along the north road, not a private farm standing outside the town rolls.

The Ledger Keeper

The Ledger Keeper

Your ranch is Nabbitt Farms. We know it well enough. It is the largest supplier for miles, which is why Pike expects a proper share.

The ledger keeper’s certainty confirms the name, while the tally bearer’s fingers tighten around the broken marker. Their lawful language has thinned into an admission that Pike’s demand rests on expectation, not an agreed town levy.

The Collector with the Notched Tally

The Collector with the Notched Tally

Nabbitt Farms, then. Show us the grain figures, and we will calculate what Pike says is owed. Call it unlawful if you wish, but you know who holds the road account.

“Okay but first i need to see some verification of this Arden Pike, because i have never heard of him. {Dagg says as he jumps down off the wagon and walks to the back of the wagon to sneak a look inside to make sure Rusk and Merrin are still being quiet}”

Dagg Nabbitt

Dagg Nabbitt

Okay, but first I need to see some verification of this Arden Pike. I have never heard of him.

Dagg jumps down from the wagon and walks around to the rear at an unhurried rancher’s pace, lingering just long enough to make the detour look casual. He lifts the canvas flap and checks inside.

The watcher beyond the hedgerow sits silent among the empty sacks, one finger raised in warning while the young drover keeps still beside him. Both are alert, unharmed, and quiet. Dagg lets the canvas fall and returns toward the collectors.

The Ledger Keeper

The Ledger Keeper

Verification is reasonable. Pike’s appointment bears the reeve’s seal, and his written account names this road and its levy.

The ledger keeper opens a leather satchel beside the grain sacks and draws out a folded writ. A red wax seal hangs from its cord, stamped with a reeve’s hooked staff.

The Road Watcher

The Road Watcher

There. Arden Pike’s name, the reeve’s mark, and the road account. Read it yourself, rancher.

The writ is held out within easy reach. Its seal is intact, and the neat lines beneath it identify Arden Pike as collector for the north road, though they say nothing about taxing Nabbitt Farms itself.

“I do not see anywhere on this where it states my farms name, nor do i see where it states you can rob and beat people blindly as they drive by, doesnt say anything about taxing local farms either, and I am about to fail to see three annoying men trying to rob me here very soon. {Dagg says as he readies an arrow in his bow and aims it at the leader of the three men} Now I suppose you all tell me what is really going on here before this nice road gets a little messy. {As Dagg says this, Merrin and Rusk jump out of the back of the wagon weapons drawn, ready to defend Dagg}”

I see no statement here naming my farm, authorizing robbery, or taxing local farms. Tell me what is really going on before this road gets messy.

Dagg nocks an arrow and draws until the bowstring bites hard into his fingers. His long bow’s elven limbs hold steady, though the effort strains his shoulder; the arrowhead fixes on the road watcher.

The wagon’s canvas bursts open behind him. Merrin rises with a drawn weapon, and Rusk steps down beside him, crossbow ready, placing the three collectors between armed opposition and the exposed writ.

The Road Watcher

The Road Watcher

Lower that bow. Pike’s writ names the road, not your farm, and the reeve’s seal does not grant us leave to strike travelers.

The road watcher lifts both hands away from his weapon. The ledger keeper closes the satchel, while the tally bearer backs from the grain sacks and lets his broken marker fall.

The Ledger Keeper

The Ledger Keeper

Pike promised us a share for every load we brought in. The farm levy was his addition, not the reeve’s. We took it because he said no one would resist.

Rusk Vale

Rusk Vale

Then the account and the tally come with us. Keep your weapons lowered, and no blood needs to touch this road.

“You say you dont strike travelers, but this man here says you attacked his animal. and for that, I dont think I can let you leave. I would speak now before an arrow splits that lying mouth of yours.”

You say you do not strike travelers, but this man says you attacked his animal. Speak now, before an arrow splits that lying mouth of yours.

Dagg’s bow remains drawn, the elven limbs humming faintly around its magic-imbued arrow. His love of animals turns the drover’s report from routine testimony into a hard demand, while Steady Under Watch keeps his aim calm beneath three frightened stares.

The Road Watcher

The Road Watcher

We did not mean to kill the mule. Pike’s order was to stop the cart, and when the beast balked, the others struck it until it fell.

The confession empties the camp of bravado. The tally bearer looks away, and the ledger keeper’s hands rise from the satchel as all three collectors understand that the arrow will not waver.

The Ledger Keeper

The Ledger Keeper

It was Pike’s order. We hit the mule, took the grain, and threatened the drover. I will swear it before the reeve if you lower that bow.

Merrin Holt

Merrin Holt

That is the truth, Dagg. My mule was frightened, not dangerous. They beat him for refusing the road.

The watcher beyond the hedgerow keeps his crossbow trained while the three men stand exposed and compliant. The writ, ledger, and broken tally are now surrendered evidence, and the collectors’ confession belongs to the road.
