Your Border Collie

Dagg spurs Peppers east along the road, urging her swiftly without exhausting her. Your border collie runs at his side, the strip of green cloth fixed to Dagg’s hat snapping in the wind.

Near the old quarry, four Pike Searchers occupy a low camp beside cold ashes and scattered papers. Dagg draws Peppers into the nearby tree line and leaves her concealed beneath the branches.

Your border collie stays close as Dagg advances on foot, bow in hand. He moves between scrub and broken stone until the camp lies below him, partly screened by thorn bushes.

The four searchers bear Pike’s mark on their cloaks and tack. Three sort through a saddlebag together, while the fourth leaves the fire and studies the ground around the camp.

The lone searcher crouches over a fresh hoofprint, then traces its direction toward the tree line. His hand settles near his weapon as he follows the signs of pursuit.

From cover, Dagg has a clear bowman’s vantage over the camp. Below, the searcher pauses beside the track and slowly lifts his head toward the hidden mare.

“{Dagg fires a magic arrow empowered by his boy perfectly at the guy by the fire, aiming for his eye for a quick brutal death} {He hurries and readies a second arrow to deliver it to the next guard, and then a third if that works for the third, keeping one alive to tie up and question}{Dagg is silent and accurate}”

Dagg’s relaxed hesitation lasts only as long as one breath. Steady Under Watch fixes his aim, and the elven bow hums as a purple-lit arrow leaves the trees.

The arrow strikes the searcher by the cold fire, a young adult man with a lean build, weathered tan skin, a narrow face, cropped brown hair, and a crooked nose beneath his marked cloak, killing him instantly. Before the others can understand, Dagg draws again, his legendary accuracy turning the ambush into a swift, silent sequence.

A second violet arrow crosses the camp and kills the armed searcher sorting the saddlebag. Your border collie remains low beside Dagg, while Peppers waits hidden among the trees.

Dagg looses a third arrow before the final searcher can reach his weapon. The shaft kills the man standing at the far side of the camp, leaving only one Pike Searcher alive.

The surviving searcher drops his weapon and raises both hands. Dagg advances with the bow trained on him, binds his wrists and ankles, and pulls him away from the bodies.

I surrender. I will tell you where Pike’s rider went, and what orders brought us here.

The cold ashes settle again. Dagg keeps the captured searcher alive for questioning, while the marked arrows lie among the camp’s scattered papers and the trail east remains open.

Learn where Pike’s rider went

“{After Dagg ties him up he begins his questioning.} {Dagg closes in on him, his face inches away, Daggs eyes glow that familiar purple to add intimidation} You are going to tell me everything, where Pike is, his day to day routine, why Mara was targeted, and the name of the one who shot her, his full name. If i detect even an shred of lying coming from your voice, you will wish you were dead! {As Dagg says this last line, his lich powers change his face slightly showing purple smoke radiating off of his skeletal face.}”

You are going to tell me everything: where Pike is, his daily routine, why Mara was targeted, and the full name of the one who shot her. If I hear even a shred of lying, you will wish you were dead.

Dagg closes until his face is inches from the captive's. His purple eyes burn through the cold quarry air, and Questions Witnesses guides each demand toward facts rather than fury. Yet the Lich Queen Enemy keeps one guarded instinct alive: he shows only the power needed to terrify, never its source.

Purple smoke rolls from Dagg's changing face, revealing the skeletal shape beneath his features. The bound searcher's breath catches, and his bravado collapses before the threat can become a second question.

Pike Searcher 1

Pike Searcher 1

Pike is in Grayfen, at the old tollhouse by the east road. He wakes before dawn, meets his riders at first light, reviews reports until midday, and sends messengers out before dusk. He sleeps there under guard.

Pike Searcher 1

Pike Searcher 1

Mara was targeted because the king's judgment gave her Vellstead. Pike needed her dead before she could take possession, and he wanted the judgment blamed on confusion over the old claim.

Pike Searcher 1

Pike Searcher 1

The bowman was Caldus Rime, a young rider from Pike's paid guard. That is his full name. He took the shot, wore Pike's marked tack, and rode east after leaving your farm.

The searcher gives up the route, routine, motive, and killer's name in a shaking rush. The purple smoke thins, but Dagg's bow remains trained on him while the quarry holds every answer in its silence.

“{Daggs full body now skeltal in appearance as rage pours through him, frightening the pike search so much that he wets himself.} You will give me your cloak with Pikes White Trident emblem on it. You will tell noone of what happened here, or what you saw. If i even hear one rumor of this, i will assume it came from you, and when you are sleeping safely in your home, I will be there. When you are eating dinner thinking youre alone, you wont be. Give me your cloak with Pike’s white trident emblem. Tell no one what happened here. If I hear a rumor, I will assume it came from you. You will never rest easy, because I will be there whenever you think you are alone. Do you understand me?

Dagg’s full body becomes skeletal beneath the streaming purple smoke. His bow remains steady in one hand, its magic answering Steady Under Watch and Questions Witnesses as his legendary will narrows the threat to clear, dreadful facts.

The smoke pours across the quarry stones and coils around the captive’s face. Dagg’s guarded secrecy, sharpened by the Lich Queen Enemy, keeps the display controlled rather than revealing more than this witness must see.

Pike Searcher 1

Pike Searcher 1

I understand. I swear it. No one will hear it from me. Take the cloak, and leave me with nothing to remember but your warning.

The searcher wets himself in terror, then awkwardly works the Pike-marked cloak free despite his bound wrists. He pushes it across the stones, the white trident plainly visible through the violet haze.

Dagg takes the cloak and gathers it over his arm. The bow never leaves the captive, and the smoke continues to fill the cold air while the surviving searcher stares at the ground, silenced by fear.

Grayfen’s old tollhouse squats beside the east road under a bruised evening sky. Wind moves through its warped shutters, carrying ash, horse sweat, and the faint smell of boiled grain.

Peppers bears the packed saddlebag, swollen with Pike’s men’s cloaks, weapons, food, blankets, and equipment. Your border collie circles the roadside, nose low, while fresh hoofprints lead behind the tollhouse toward the eastern track.

Dagg Nabbitt

Dagg Nabbitt

The prints are fresh, and one horse carries a heavier load than the others.

Inside the tollhouse, a ledger lies open beneath dust, its latest entry marked with Pike’s white trident. Beside it, a broken wax seal bears the name Grayfen and a hurried departure time.

Your border collie stops at the rear door and gives a low, certain growl. Beyond the threshold, a dark thread from a riding cloak clings to a splinter, pointing toward the quarry road.

Dagg secures the captured equipment against Peppers’s saddle and leaves the stripped survivor far behind. The trail is not merely eastward now: it has passed through Grayfen, and Caldus Rime rode on in haste.

From the road ahead comes the faint ring of a loose horseshoe striking stone, followed by silence. Your border collie faces the sound, and Peppers pricks her ears as the pursuit continues beyond the tollhouse.

Dagg follows the freshest hoofprints east, keeping Peppers to the firm roadside grass. Reads Hidden Signs separates Caldus’s deeper impressions from older traffic crossing the track.

The trail bends around a stand of ash trees, where a torn strip of dark cloak hangs from a thorn. The white trident thread matches Pike’s mark.

Dagg dismounts and studies the ground. A fresh heel drag, scattered gravel, and one sharply turned hoof show Caldus left the road and descended toward a shallow ravine.

Dagg Nabbitt

Dagg Nabbitt

Caldus is still riding hard, and he is alone.

Your border collie slips ahead with his nose low, then pauses at the ravine’s edge. Below, a horse stands tethered beneath the trees, its saddle still fitted and steaming from exertion.

Beyond the tethered horse, Caldus Rime, a young adult man with a lean build, weathered tan skin, a narrow face, cropped brown hair, and a dark riding cloak crouches beside a spring, washing dust from his hands. His bow rests within reach, while Dagg’s trail arrives unseen above him.

The fresh trail has carried Dagg directly to the bowman’s hiding place. Peppers remains quiet behind the ash trees, and your border collie watches the ravine for his master’s next move.

“{Dagg sneask up getting close before he rushes out, tackling Caldus in the river. Dagg uses his strength to hold Caldus's head underwater for multiple seconds, then letting him up for air, just to repeat the same process, over and over and over and over again. Until Caldus has little strength and is struggling to fight back. Dagg lifts him out of the water, Daggs face fully skeletal with purple smoke emulating from every skull opening, chilling the air. He screams so loudly it nearly shatters Caldus's ear drums.} WHY! WHY HER! {Dagg shouts, his voice echoing} {He waits for Caldus to talk before deciding what to do next}”

Dagg slips down the ravine unseen, then surges from the bank and drives Caldus into the spring. The impact bruises Dagg’s shoulder against stone, but his legendary strength keeps the bowman pinned.

Water closes over Caldus as Dagg holds him beneath the surface, lifts him for a ragged breath, then forces him under again. Each cycle strips resistance from the bowman until his struggle weakens.

The work is brutal and exact. Dagg’s old relaxed hesitation has no room to survive, while the Lich Queen Enemy hardens his purpose; his grip holds, though his scraped shoulder burns with every movement.

At last Dagg hauls Caldus from the spring and keeps him suspended against the bank. His face is fully skeletal, purple smoke pouring from every skull opening and chilling the water around them.

Dagg Nabbitt

WHY! WHY HER!

The scream echoes through the ravine, rattling the tethered horse and leaving Caldus clutching at his ears. Dagg does not release him, but waits, smoke boiling silently around his skull.

Caldus Rime

Caldus Rime

Because Pike ordered it. He said Mara’s judgment would take Vellstead from him, and I believed the payment mattered more than the woman. I was wrong.

“{Daggs pointy boney fingers reach in and steal an eye from Caldus, ripping it clean out of the socket. Caldus screams in pain as blood pours from his eye socket.} You only think that now, now that you have been caught. Caldus Rime

Caldus Rime

I was paid to shoot her! I cared about the payment, not Mara. I said what you wanted because I was afraid, and now you have taken my eye!

Caldus struggles through the pain, his remaining eye fixed on the smoke-wreathed skull. The tethered horse stamps above the spring, while the ravine carries his confession into the evening.

“And I will continue to take more, as you have taken so much from me. {Dagg grabs his sword and cuts an ear off of Caldus swiftly and cleanly} {after doing so Dagg continues} She was carrying my child! You took so much from me, what is one eye and one ear to you anyways!”

Dagg’s violet-flamed sword flashes once more, and Caldus loses a finger. The act is swift and non-graphic, but the bowman’s cry carries through the ravine as he curls inward, sobbing and begging for his life.

Purple smoke pours around Dagg’s skull, and the sword’s violet flame feeds a harsh spell through its channels. The Lich Queen Enemy sharpens his secrecy into a controlled terror, revealing power without its source.

The threat succeeds, but the effort costs Dagg a visible moment of composure. His grip tightens after a brief hesitation, and the smoke shudders as grief nearly breaks through his command of himself.

Caldus Rime

Caldus Rime

Yes. I swear fealty to you. I will obey your instructions without fault. Please, do not take anything else.

Dagg lowers Caldus only when the oath is complete, keeping him under the sword’s violet glow. The bowman remains awake, cowering and bound by fear, while his stolen life now serves the man he tried to destroy.

The sword's violet flame can power the spell Dagg channeled through it.
