Before Dagg can untie the raven’s message, the farm gate creaks open. A travel-stained halfling stands beyond it, short and broad-shouldered, with weathered brown skin, tangled dark hair, and a salt-stiff blue coat.

Panko

Panko

Panko of The Obsidian. I seek Dagg Nabbitt, master of this farm. I carry a parcel from the ship’s stores, and its mark names Mara Vell.

He keeps both hands visible and does not cross the gate. A small parcel wrapped in oiled sailcloth hangs from his belt, secured with twine and darkened by long travel.

Stay where you are. We have no notice of a ship coming here, and you are asking after someone who cannot answer for herself.

Your border collie gives a low warning growl beside the young drover’s boots. The halfling glances at the dog, then lowers his eyes to the parcel without reaching for it.

Panko

I understand. The Obsidian recovered it from stores marked for Mara, but no one knew where else to send it. Confirm that she is the recipient, and I will surrender it.

The raven shifts on the porch rail, its tied message brushing the wood. Evening light catches the waxed parcel while the young drover watches Panko’s hands and your border collie guards the gate.

“Thank you, Panko was it? It is very odd that a parcel is being delivered to a dead woman, but I will take it. Or you can give it to her yourself. {dagg says as he walks towards Maras grave under the old oak tree. The mound dirt still looks fresh somehow, a nice stone is placed at the head of the mound. Flowers grow all around the mound dirt, flowers of every color.} This is where I buried her after a worthless man ordered her to be killed.”

Dagg walks beneath the old oak toward Mara’s grave, with Panko following at a respectful distance. The fresh mound is ringed with flowers of every color, and a fine stone marks its head.

The guitar waits silent on the porch behind him. Relaxed would leave the parcel for another moment, but Steady Under Watch keeps his steps measured and carries him to the grave without delay.

Then the parcel has reached the right place, even if its intended hands are gone. I will give it to you, Dagg Nabbitt.

Panko unties the oiled sailcloth and extends the marked parcel. Dagg takes it beside the stone, while the flowers stir softly around Mara’s grave and the border collie watches from the porch.
