The market swallows Kareem in spice smoke, brass bells, and hawkers’ cries. His purse of gold hangs heavy at his hip, a deliberate flash in the crowd. Inspector Lian and the Gate Scribe drift behind him, pretending not to watch.

Across the lane, a tea seller stiffens at the sight of the purse. Not fear, recognition. He turns his head too quickly, then lowers it as if ashamed of the motion.

There. Not the seller. The reflection in the lacquer bowl.

In the polished curve of a serving tray, a pale sigil blooms and fades, caught only for a breath. Lian sees it too, and his hand closes around the hilt at his belt.

Keep moving, Bishop. Someone has marked the route.

The Gate Scribe slips a fresh strip of paper from his sleeve and presses it into Kareem’s path, as if offering a receipt. Hidden on it, under the merchant’s cluttered stamp, is a ward sign copied in haste.

They are watching the coin, and they are watching who follows it. Spend once, and we learn who answers.

Kareem reaches the center of the lane as the crowd parts around him. Somewhere above, a window shutter clicks shut. The trap is set, and the stolen gold is no longer just evidence, it is bait.

Kareem slows at a stone apron fed by a narrow spillway. At its center stands a broad fountain, old and official, its basin ringed with carved cranes and a lion-faced spout. Water runs clear enough to mirror faces, ledgers, and lies.

That is the one. Right in the open.

He stops before it, and the cost lands with the find, his sleeve catches on a nail-hidden lattice at the fountain edge. Cloth snags and tears cleanly near the wrist, a small rip in new work for a useful view.

There, by the bowl. See how the sigil returns when the water stills? It is not on the stone, it is being laid over it.

In the fountain’s reflection, the pale mark shivers, then slides toward a nearby archway. The tea seller has gone pale at the stall. Inspector Lian’s head snaps up, following the same line.

Do not let that route vanish. Bishop, hold your place.

The Gate Scribe glances from the fountain to Kareem’s torn sleeve, then to the street beyond. His brush pauses over the ward slip, ready to record whoever moves first.
